Revolutionary War Pension File of John Gibbs

John Gibbs was a resident of Garrard County, KY when he applied for his pension under the Act of Congress passed on 18 March 1818, entitled Act to Provide for Certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War. Gibbs personally appeared in the Circuit Court of Garrard County, at the Courthouse in Lancaster on 17 July 1820 to make his declaration in order to obtain the benefit of that Act.

…for certain Persons engaged in the Land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed by the Act of Congress March [18] 1818 and that I have not
_________ any person in Trust for me any property or [indentures?] or contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained within the schedule hereto amended, and by me Subscribed.

To wit:

Nothing - no occupation & too old to work, no family, very much afflicted with infirmities.

John Gibbs attached his declaration and schedule which was sworn to and Ordered to be Recorded to wit:

On this 17th day of July 1820 personally appeared in open Court of the County of Garrard, being a Court of Record in and for the County aforesaid, John Gibbs of the age of 65 years in the month of December last, and resident in the said county of Garrard, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows, towit: That he served the full term of nine months under…

…Captain John Farrow under whom he marched to Savanah River and was put under another Capt. by the name of Mills, and was incorporated into a Regiment commanded by Colonel Archibald Lytle in the North Carolina line in the year 1776 or 1777. That he was at Charles Town South Carolina when the first attempt was made on that place by the British Officer, Gen. Prevo during the said service. That he was at the taking of Fort Stono from the British which lies between Charleston & Savanah, and that he continued in the said State of South Carolina in said Mills’ company (who’s Christian name he thinks was John, but of this he is not certain) and that the said company remained until he obtained his discharge in the said Regiment, commanded by the said Archibald Lytle, who was under Genl. Green.
And I do solemnly swear I was on the 18th day of September 1818 a citizen of the United States and ever since have been a resident of the said County of Garrard, and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of any act of Congress entitled Act to Provide for Certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not, nor has any person, in trust for me and property as securities, contracts, or debts due me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto amended and by me subscribed, which is as follows, to wit:

One mare and colt of the value of Forty Dollars.

One cow & calf value $12.

I have no land nor slaves, household furniture not exceeding the value of $20. I have a small crop growing on rented land of a few acres.

John Gibbs this day swore to, in open court, and filed the following Petition, which was ordered to be recorded and certified to wit:

The Petition of John Gibbs of Garrard County, Kentucky for a Pention [sic] under the Law of Congress in favor of Revolutionary Soldiers.

To the Honourable [sic] W. S. Kelly, Circuit Judge of Garrard County.

Your Petitioner John Gibbs states on oath that he enlisted as a regular soldier in the Continental Army of the Revolution at Granville County, North Carolina in the fall of the year 1776 for the Term of Nine months under Captain John Farrow, and was put under Caps. Mills and marched with said officer to Savannah River in South Carolina, Purrisburg and was incorporated into a regiment commanded by Col. Archibald Lytle, the No. of the regiment he does not recollect, that he continued in South Carolina until the said Term was out, when he got his discharge from Maj. Armstrong at Monks Corner, which discharge he has lost; that he is now about 64 years of age in very low circumstances from which he is [in] need of aid from his country; that he knows of no man in this part of the world by whom he can prove his service.

David Gordan, a respectable witness and states on oath that he has known the above petitioner John Gibbs about two years, that he is in very low circumstances and that the said petitioner is a man whose statements on Oath are entitled to credit.
