  1. I am trying to locate the burial location of my great grandfather and grandmother. I have both of their death certificates which shows they were living on Route 1 Hertford. My great grandfather was MATHIAS TARKENTON and died on July 2, 1920. The death certificate shows he was buried on July 4, 1920 in Perquimans County but it gives no cemetery. I have checked over numerous cemeteries without any success. Likewise my great grandmother was FRANCES ELIZABETH BRICKHOUSE TARKENTON. She was living with her son in Norfolk and died on June 5, 1932. Her death certificate shows she was buried June 7, 1932 in Hertford but gives no cemetery. I have to believe she was buried by MATHIAS but I still have no idea where. Could anyone help with this? Thanks for any help.

  2. PALITAIH BLANCHARD was born in 1823. Who were his parents? I think that ROBERT may have cohabitated but find no results. ROBERT’S next marriage around 1850 is documented.

  3. Does anyone have information about a BRIARWOOD PLANTATION in Perquimans County where HENRY SPIVEY and CENA WILSON were thought to be married about 1840?

  4. I am looking for parents/siblings of THOMAS GREGORY who married LEAH ROGERSON in Perquimans Co 15 Sep 1815. She was the daughter of ISIAH ROGERSON and ESTHER RIDDICK. According to the census THOMAS was born about 1778 in VA (Nansemond)?

  5. I am trying to prove that DOROTHY/DOROTHEA WHITE (1758-1820) was married to PHINEAS LAMB (1746-1809) on October 1778. The only definitive proof I have is a translation of a gift deed written by DOROTHY’S mother, LYDIA, dated April 17, 1788. The gift deed mentions all children including DOROTHY LAMB. The deed translation lists film #0019576 pg. 232 as the source. The bottom of the deed states “Perquimans County, July Term at Hertford 1788. This may certify that the written deed of gift was proved in open court and ordered to be registered. Test J. Harvey. Registered this 14th day of November 1788. Test A. Skinner Reg.”

I have contacted the Deeds office in Perquimans County – no record of the gift deed. I can’t locate the film # which could mean the gift deed may not be digitized and/or indexed. Does anyone have a copy of the original gift deed or proof of the White/Lamb marriage?

  6. I am trying to connect thru records, ELIZABETH, daughter of GEORGE and ANN MARWOOD DURANT to her husband, THOMAS WALLER. I need proof that ELIZABETH DURANT married THOMAS WALLER. I have found ELIZABETH’S birth records, and a birth for GEORGE WALLER in 1681 and THOMAS’ and GEORGE’S deaths in 1687. I believe that ELIZABETH died before a will written by GEORGE DURANT Durant in 1688. Does anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks so much

  7. I am looking for information on NATHAN JENKINS, my great grandfather. He lived in New Hope as far as I know. He had a daughter named SARAH ANN JENKINS.

  8. I am trying to find out the origin of Quaker WILLIAM TOWNSEND of early Perquimans County, and RACHEL TOWNSEND. If anyone can provide information on where they came from, I would appreciate any details that could shed light on this Townsend group.

    1. Hi Kimberly – I too am looking for the same. Have –

      WILLIAM TOWNSEND
      1740–1830
Birth 1740 • Perquimans, North Carolina, United States
Death 21 JUL 1830 • Robeson County, North Carolina, USA

      Suspect –
      JOHN TOWNSEND
      1723–1795
Birth 1723 • Bedminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania, United States
Death 1795 • Cane Creek, Union, South Carolina, United State

But have no evidence to be sure. Have you received any new info since your July post?

  9. Looking into the family of WILLIAM TOWNSEND (1756-1785) who married ELIZABETH WHITE (1757-1824). Interested in their children: JOSIAH, WILLIAM and CHARLES. Also ELIZABETH’S second husband JESSE NEWBY (1768-1819) and their children; ELIZABETH NEWBY, FREDERICK NEWBY, MARY (NEWBY) TROTTER, THOMAS NEWBY, and ESTHER CULWELL (NEWBY) HOLLOWELL. Any newspaper articles, stories, obituaries, etc would be helpful.

  10. Requesting information on HEZEKIAH OVERTON, one of first black county commissioner, during reconstruction of the civil war. Any info concerning his entry into Perq. Co. will be appreciated.

  11. Seeking sources to prove RICHARD STALLINGS (born in Nansemond Co Va and died Chowan Co NC) was the son of JOHN STALLINGS born 1658 (1668)in Nansemonds Co VA and died in Perquimans Co NC abt 1786.

      1. No. I continue to search for information to link NICHOLAS STALLINGS SR (1620 – ? ) to JOHN (1658 – 1786) to RICHARD (1688 – ) to GREGORY (1700 – ?) to JOHN (1729 – ?). I am not sure of the dates several are from web sites with no sourcing. That drives me nuts! I have a will of NICHOLAS dated 1767 that names wife, CHRISTIAN and sons NICHOLAS and JOHN along with several daughters. That fits… I also found court records from a GREGORY dated 1766 stating JOHN my son. The next doc I found ( 1780) is JOHN’s will naming son JOHN and wife JUDA. I believe the key lies in Edgecombe Co records.

  12. I am trying to prove that JEFFERSON GILBERT b.1817, MARCELLA GILBERT b.1818, ROBERTSON GILBERT b.1819, CHARLES GILBERT b.1825, and GEORGE WASHINGTON GILBERT b.1830 were all siblings born in PERQUIMANS COUNTY. I also would like proof that their parents were BENJAMIN GILBERT ca 1795 and MAREY or MARY (possibly nee BUTT).I seem to have exhausted all info from the established sites.

  13. Looking for info on JAMES OATES b. 1644/45 d. 1703/04 in Perquimans County. OATES was an attorney/magistrate and first appeared in the January Court of 1696/97 as recorded in “The History of Perquimans County” by Winslow. He later held court at his home. He married ELIZABETH EIVENS b. ca 1665, the widow of RICHARD EIVENS, on 11 Sept 1694. Ceremony performed by Deputy Gov. Thomas Harvey. Also need info on his son, JOSEPH OATES b. 1697 in Perquimans, married to ELIZABETH WYATT. Looking for the WYATT family connections in vicinity which appear to span several generations. Birthplace of JAMES is likely England but some have questioned this. If England, he may have migrated to the Colonies via Barbados. Could be he was born in Virginia but have not found Parish records that show this.

    1. ELIZABETH was the daughter of JOHN WYATT oand RACHEL CALLOWAY and the granddaughter of CALEB CALLOWAY and RACHEL LAWRENCE and WILLIAM WYATT and REBECCA KENT. Both of these families have ties to the PIERCE/PEARCE family of early Perquimans County.

  14. Hello,

I am currently looking more into the ELLIOTT genealogy via ancestry.com. I’m specifically looking into the JOSIAH ELLIOTTS (Jr. & Sr.) and where they come from.
    Current info:
    – JOSIAH ELLIOTT JR. (1769-1846), sp. SARAH SIMPSON (1770-?) [sons John Hiram Elliott, Robert Elliott, Adam Wesley Elliott]
    – JOSIAH ELLIOTT SR. (1747-1796), sp. JEMIMA ROBINSON (m. 1773) & MARY WHITE (m. 1794) [based on marriage dates, I believe the JR’S mother is J. ROBINSON].

It is my understanding, based on information gathered from various sources (e.g. this site, the US Quaker Meeting Records of Perquimans, and the US Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy) that JOSIAH ELLIOTT SR. was disowned by the Quakers for marrying outside the discipline (J Robinson) (he also appeared to be a scoundrel!), and then MARY WHITE was disowned for marrying outside the discipline as well (to JOSIAH ELLIOTT SR). Now I also believe that JOSIAH ELLIOTT SR.’S parents are BENJAMIN THOMAS ELLIOTT (1708-1774) and SARAH WHITE (1724-1782) based on these records, and that B.T. ELLIOTT’S parents are THOMAS ELLIOTT (1654-1729) and MARGARET WINSLOW (1680-1734). I haven’t gotten much further from there but intend on digging more.

Please let me know if I am missing something or if you happen to have other information about the JOSIAH ELLIOTT’S. If anything, some more source material would be helpful to further my own research on the matter if you have any suggestions.

    Thank you!

  15. Looking for any further information on WILLIAM BEEBE who signed a bond agreement with WILLSON AVERY in which he paid $500 and agreed to marry SARAH AVERY. don signed January3, 1809.William would be my ggggrandfather.

  16. Searching for information about the BATEMAN family. JOHN T. BATEMAN was born in 1774 in Edgecombe County, NC and married a woman named KEZIA (or perhaps KEZIAH). They had a son ASAHEL, b. Feb 23, 1794 in Edgecombe County, NC who moved to Jefferson County, IL in 1819, where he died Mar 22, 1846. His wife was MILLIE (MILLY, MILLEY)JOHNSON, b. Dec 11 1796 in Loudoun County, VA. Their son HARVEY BARGER BATEMAN b. 1833 is my GGF.

JOHN T. and KEZIA BATEMAN have become my “brick walls” and I would sincerely appreciate any information about them and their predecessors.

  17. I’m looking for information about parents of SUSANNA CLAVER (Claber/Klaber), 1760–1832. Born in Perquimans, NC. Spouse was JOHN ELLIOTT 1760-1797. One son was Captain JOHN AUGUSTUS “GUS” ELLIOTT.

  18. I’m looking for any information about a land owner by the name of JOSIAH GILBERT about 1730. I do know that he was a Quaker and married his wife, SARAH WILLIAMS in October of that year. I have a copy of his will for 1760, in which he left items to his wife and children upon his death about 1759. Most of the information I have on him I obtained through the Quaker meeting/rolls. He doesn’t seem to be related to the other (more popular) GILBERTS known as the Braintree line. I can not seem to find any record of him prior to his marriage in 1730. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might look for information on him besides the Quaker meetings/rolls? Thank you for your time. C. Gilbert

    1. JOSIAH’S wife was SARAH PEARCE/PIERCE. She had previously been married to PETER JONES and JOHN WILLIAMS. She was the daughter of THOMAS PEARCE and MARY KENT. This PEARCE family was in NC as early as 1663 as evidenced by a petition date 13 Sep 1679 from the Quakers to the Lords Proprietors of Carolina that states that the signers had been inhabitants of NC since 1663-64.

MARY KENT married, after the death of THOMAS PEARCE, THOMAS GILBERT. It was her daughter who married JOSIAH GILBERT. Have not been able to determine a possible relationship between THOMAS GILBERT and JOSIAH GILBERT.

  19. I’m looking for information on LURENDA NICHOLS (b. ~1820) who was married to WILLIAM G MARSH (~1805-1859) in Hertford, NC. I’m interested in learning who their parents were.

  20. Trying to find any info on my 3rd ggrandfather JOHN SIVAGE (aka JOHN SAVAGE). What I know: He was b. ca. 1794, md. to ANNA MORSE (aka ANN MOSS, dau. of RICHARD MOSS and SARAH TURNER, sister of TULLY MORSE and JOHN MORSE), b. ca. 1797 in Perquimans County. JOHN SIVAGE (SAVAGE) served in the War of 1812. JOHN and ANNA SIVAGE had four children: ISAIAH R. SIVAGE b. 1826; LUCRETIA F. SIVAGE (b. 1830, md. ALEXANDER ARCHER); ARMSTEAD SIVAGE (my direct line), b. 1824. JOHN SIVAGE died Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1836. On February 12, 1839, Guardianship was granted to ROBERT S. HIATT (who md. ANNA MORSE SIVAGE after the death of her first husband) in Perquimans County, paper signed and witnessed by JOHN MEAD, TULLY MORSE, CHAS. M. FORD, R.H. WHEDBEE and J.M. COX.
JOHN SIVAGE was the brick wall my grandmother hit (she researched him, her great-grandfather, all her adult life, until she passed away a few years ago) and though I’m finding some things she didn’t, such as the guardianship papers, I still haven’t found him or his background. Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated.

  23. I am researching ALETHIA BONNER who was born February, 1870 and married WILLIAM MOORE in 1890 in Chowan Co. ALETHIA’S parents are ??? HENRY and MATILDA BONNER. In 1900 ALETHIA was living with WILLIAM and their 4 children in Hertford, Perquimans, NC. Their children are LAURA (LEORA), MATILDA, LONNY and LOUETTA. They has a servant name ANN HOLLEY who may have been related to them. In 1910 they were still living in Hertford but had three more children name JOHN, ALFONSA and MARY. Can you tell me anything about Alethia Bonner and her parents HENRY AND MATILDA BONNER before 1900? Can you tell me if Altheia’s Children got married and had children in Hertford, NC?

  24. Looking for any information on ELISABETH LACEY Born to WILLIAM LACEY and MARY JOHNSON in 1702 in Perquimans County. She married a ROGER KENYON. Trying to find records for her parents and her siblings.

  25. The EGGERTON family appears frequently in transactions in early 1770’s. Am trying to establish line. Any information appreciated.

  26. I am looking for info on my 9th greatgrandparents who came to American from England and Ireland in 1653 in Perquimans in NC. They were JAMES THIGPEN and ELYN TRAVIS. She gave birth to around 20 children, many of whom died. One daughter, ANN THIGPEN was born in Albemarle and died in Perquimans on April 11, 1702.

    1. JAMES THIGPEN and ELYN TRAVIS are my 10th greatgrandparents, and ANN THIGPEN is my 9th greatgrandmother. I found some interesting information about them in a book called “The Thigpen Indian Tribe Family History” by Lanette Hill on Google books. (I accessed portions of the book for free through MyHeritage.com because I have a data plan with them.) It’s available for purchase at http://www.lulu.com/shop/lanette-hill/the-thigpen-indian-tribe-family-history/paperback/product-230337.html

      Hope that helps!

    2. JAMES and ELYN are my 10th great grandparents. I only have the names of two of their children, JAMES THIGPEN JR and ANN THIGPEN. ANN is my line
JAMES’ father is believed to be JOHN FITZPEN
His mother is SARA SEGRAVE born in 1604-Ireland and died in 1627-England.

  27. I am researching WILLIAM WOOD born 9-3-1722 in Perquimans County NC. I am seeking information about his parents and grandparents and when they came to NC. I believe they came from England, so information about when and where in England is a plus. I have traced his decedents to myself.

  29. Looking for information on WILLIAM ASHLEY B 1710, THOMAS ASHLEY B 1690. Thank you for any information you may have. There are several ASHLEY’S in this area with the same name. Jennie

  30. A probable ancestor of my family was Francis SEGRAVE of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. In January 1696 Francis SEGRAVES is listed with Lucretia, his wife, Thomas his son, Francis his son, and William POWEL on a Transportation Writ to Perquimans Precinct Colony of North Carolina from Isle of Wight where he was a witness to 2 property transactions in 1694. Francis wrote a will in IOW in 1725 which was probated in early 1727.
That suggests that he considered IOW as his home and may explain why he does not appear on any land sales in the Albemarle region. He did witness a will in Chowan Pct.: 19 Apr 1697 Francis and Lucretia SEGRAVE of Chowan Precinct, NC listed as witnesses to will of Thomas STACEY, so must have resided in the area for a while. Source: Abstracts of North Carolina Wills, By: J. Bryan GRIMES, Secretary of State, 1910, Page 359. It is possible that his son, Thomas, may be the Thomas LEGRAVE mentioned in an 18 Dec 1707 deed between Thomas HOUGHTON of Perquimans Pct. and Thomas SNOWDEN.
Any more information about Francis or the SEGRAVE(S) family will be very much appreciated.

  31. I would like to know about my grandfather ABNER B SWAIN he was born in perquimans nc in 1881. I would like know about his family Thank you

  32. Searching for any info on ISAAC WILLSON (1665-1714) and wife ANN THIGPEN (sp?) (1667 – ?). Two key Qs: Were they Quakers? Where did WILLSON (note double L, not single) family come from?

Thank you in advance for any info!

    1. ANN THIGPEN was my 8th great grandmother. Her parents were JAMES THIGPEN, born in Ireland, married to her mother ELYN TRAVIS in England in 1652, and arrived in Perquimans in 1653. ANN was born in Albemarle in 1668 and died in Perquimans April 11, 1702. She was one of almost 20 children born to her mother, however, many of them died. I believe they were Quakers, but am not sure and would like to know that, too.

JAMES THIGPEN’S father, was born in 1604 in Melcomb, Dorset, England. He was killed in the Battle of Marston Moore in Ireland on July 2, 1644. That must be where he meet his future wife SARAH SEAGRAVE, born in 1604 in Dublin and died there in 1627. ANN THIGPEN married my 8th great grandfather ISAAC WILSON in 1869. He was born in 1701 in Perquimans and there July 13, 1714.

  33. I am researching the STORY (STOREY) family. They are from the New Hope Methodist Church area. My grandmother was MAMIE and had a sister ANNIE who married a BARCLIFT. I believe they are related to the SAWYER family.

    1. I have been researching STOREY family in Perquimans county. My ggrandmother was EMMA CLARA STOREY HARRELL her mother was a SAWYER. NANCY ELIZABETH SAWYER. Her husband WILLIAM JOSEPH STOREY died young 33 perhaps in Tarboro NC. I would like to know who his parents are and how he died.

  34. Researching and looking for more information on the SANDERS family (ABRAHAM SANDERS, BENJAMIN SANDERS) Would like to know if there is a family tree for the Sanders that supposedly built the NEWBOLD-WHITE house.

  35. My father LEWIS BEECHER BLANCHARD, b. 1916, d, 1993 was from Gates and Chowan Co. NC. He often said that we were kin to, SPEIGHT’S, WHITES, SPIVEY’S, BROWN’S, KING’S, BOND’S, JORDAN’S,
HOFLER’S, and BENNETT’S. I can not get before 1810 for my BLANCHARD line, as I can not find the Parents of ELIZABETH BLANCHARD, who had 3 BLANCHARD children with JAMES HOFLER, they never married, and had 1. ISAAC BLANCHARD/HOFLER, b. abt. 1810, 2. RICHARD BLANCHARD, b. 1813, ( my ggggrandfather ), NANCY BLANCHARD, b. abt. 1813/14. JAMES HOFLER was married to DEBORAH OUTLAW, Sep. 1802 and she left for parts unknown Dec. 1802. ELIZABETH took up with JAMES, and he had petitioned the Gates Co. Court for a divorce from DEBORAH OUTLAW on several occasions, and in 1819 the Court granted him a divorce, but he then married a PENELOPE HAYNES instead of ELIZABETH BLANCHARD with whom he had 3 children with. Before JAMES Died in 1822 he had his ISAAC BLANCHARD son’s name changed from BLANCHARD to HOFLER. Most likely so he could leave his property to him? His younger son RICHARD BLANCHARD kept his mothers BLANCHARD name. Her name ELIZABETH BLANCHARD was listed in the Court Records when ISAAC BLANCHARD had his name changed to HOFLER. So we know that ELIZABETH was still alive, in 1821/22, but have never found as to what happened to her after that. We know that NANCY BLANCHARD was married to a PIERCE abt. 1843.
I have been working this off and on since 1997, and learned that ELIZABETH BLANCHARD was her name in Jun. 2013. I would guess that she was born about 1784? But can not find the name of her parents? I do believe that I’ll find her parents one day soon!
So if you have any information that may link me to her, thanks!

  36. I noticed in DANIEL STALLINGS will that his wife is named MILLISON. In 1812 ISAAC RIDDICK married a woman named MELLISON STALLINGS. Could this second one be a granddaughter. And if so does anyone know who her parents were? I assume the spelling of Millison is probably Millicent .
    Thank you,
    Frances Callaghan
