Thirty-Seventh Regt. U.S.C. Infantry

HISTORY OF COMPANY "E"

This Company was organized on the 1st of March, 1864, at Norfolk, Virginia, by Major William A. CUTLER. From the time of its organization until June, 1865, the Company has always been with the regiment, participating in all the marches and battles in which the regiment was engaged. In June, 1865, the Company was detailed as part of the Provost Guard for the city of Wilmington, on which duty it continued until the latter part of September, 1865. The men, in all the various and arduous duties they were called on to perform, exhibited a patriotism that could not be excelled by any troops. On the 30th day of November, 1865, this Company was ordered to Fort Fisher as a portion of the garrison.

Commissioned Officers

William A. CUTLER - Captain. Received the appointment of Captain in this Company, October 1, 1863. Promoted Major May 7th, 1866.

Wallace T. GEORGE - First Lieutenant. Was appointed First Lieutenant from private in the 19th Massachusetts Volunteers, and discharged on surgeon's certificate in January, 1865.

J(oseph) E. KIMBALL - Second Lieutenant. Appointed October 1, 1863. Promoted First Lieutenant, and transferred to 116 U.S.C.T. in December, 1865.

Edwin WILLIAMS - Second Lieutenant. Was appointed from Sergeant of Company B in July, 1865, and discharged on resignation May, 1866.

O(liver) H.P. HOWARD - First Lieutenant. Received the appointment of First Lieutenant April 1, 1865, from Secretary of War, for gallant and faithful services rendered during the war; was promoted Captain of this Company in June,1866.

David COOPER - First Sergeant. Appointed August 1, 1865. Promoted to First Sergeant November 1, 1865.

John SAWYER - Second Sergeant. Appointed January 1, 1866.

George LEWIS - Third Sergeant. Appointed November 1, 1865.

William B. DAVIS - Fifth Sergeant. Appointed December 1, 1865.

James WALKER - First Corporal. Appointed March 1, 1865.
