Thirty-Seventh Regt. U.S.C. Infantry
HISTORY OF COMPANY " I "
This Company was recruited in Newbern, North Carolina, in the months of August and September, 1864, and was organized as a Company at Chapin's Farm, Virginia, November 27th, 1864, by Lieutenant Alonzo C. REMBAUGH. This Company since its organization has taken part in all the campaigns in which the regiment has been, and is composed of fine material for soldiers, being one of the best companies in the regiment. It was detached from the regiment at Wilmington, North Carolina, November 28th, 1865, and ordered on duty in district of Newbern, North Carolina, where it was assigned to duty at Fort Macon, North Carolina.

Commissioned Officers
Captain SINGER - was mustered into the service, as private Company A, First Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry, and participated in the twenty-five battles in which it was engaged up to October 1, 1864, and for bravery and fidelity was commissioned Second Lieutenant of Colored Troops, and assigned to 3rd North Carolina Colored Infantry, and placed on recruiting service. After nine months of this duty he was ordered to regiment and assigned to Company F, 37th U.S.C.T., and was in all the campaigns of General BUTLER, on James River, Virginia, in 1864. He commanded Company B of his regiment, after the death of Captain FOSTER at the battle of Fort Harrison, and was commissioned First Lieutenant and assigned to Company E, for brave and gallant conduct at the repulse of the enemy at that fort. He was shortly afterwards appointed Regimental Adjutant, which place he filled, for more than a year, participating in all the battles with the regiment. He was Acting Assistant Adjutant-General, at post of Wilmington, North Carolina, September, 1865, and held that position until (the troops being mustered out) the post was abandoned in December, 1865. He was commissioned Captain May 24, 1866, and appointed Acting Assistant Inspector-General for the State of North Carolina.
James J. SULLIVAN - First Lieutenant. Joined the regiment January 26, 1864, at Norfolk, Virginia. Original entry into service, June 13, 1861, in 11th Massachusetts Infantry, and participated in all the battles in which that regiment was engaged, up to July 4, 1863. Was wounded four times at the second battle of Bull Run, Virginia, on the 29th day of August, 1862. Participated in all the marches, sieges and battles in which the 37th Regiment was engaged, up to the present date.
James H. GRIGGIS - Second Lieutenant. Enlisted April 1, 1861, as private Company B, 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. Was with the regiment at the battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861; was wounded in four places, captured and kept in Richmond, from August 1 to November 26, 1861; in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from December 3, 1861, to March 1, 1862; in Salisbury, North Carolina, from March 14 to June 26, 1862, at which time was released. Re-enlisted in the 33d Massachusetts Volunteers, July 13, 1862; served until March 29, 1864; was discharged for disability caused by former wounds; joined the 37th U. S. C. T., January 18, 1864, and served continually with the regiment since; was detailed on staff duty as Acting Assistant Quartermaster at Morehead City, North Carolina.
