JONES, JOHN W.

John W. Jones, son of James Franklin Jones and Rebecca Sawyer Jones. Private, enlisted at South Mills at age of  18, July 25,1961. Captured at Roanoke Island on 2/8/1862, and paroled at  Elizabeth City on 2/21/1862. Exchanged on 8/1862. Present until wounded at  Morris Island SC. Transferred to Navy by special Order 309/2 on 12/30/1863  (interesting and I am searching for the order with no luck in DC on microfilm). Rejoined the 8 Reg’t. Company A in Nov./Dec 1863 until killed near Drewry’s Bluff, VA on 5/14/1864.  Write-up form Vol 4, page 528, of North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865 A Roster dated 1973 from NC Archives in Raleigh. He was younger brother of William Sawyer Jones who is my  great grandfather.
