517. Helen Marie DAY270 was
born on 6 Nov 1919 anddied on 14 Jun 1994.
Helen Marie DAY and Walter Russell SHERRILL were
married on 24 Apr 1937. Walter
Russell SHERRILL270
(son of James Edward SHERRILL and Gussie Lou MILLER) was
born on 20 Sep 1917 in Hickory, Catawba County, North
Carolina and died on 15 Feb 1991 in Auburn, Gwinnett
County, Georgia. His ahes were spread in the mountains of
North Carolina on 17 Feb 1991.
Walter Russell Sherrill, besides being my father-in-law,
was the finest person I have ever known. I first met him
at West Hickory Baptist Church where for many years he
gave unending service to the church. He was a Royal
Ambassador leader when I, as a 11 year old met him.
Walter was very instrumental in the lives of many young
people at the church. He served as a Sunday School
Teacher, Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and as a
Layman minister. He went to many churches in the area to
preach as well as at West Hickory Baptist Church. The
church today is in large part due to his labors. Walter
for years was superintendent of Hafer Hosiery Mill in
Hickory North Carolina. He left Hafer's to run Brown's
Hosiery Mill in the Viewmont area of Hickory. He did this
until 1963, when he was being under minded by the owner,
Zeb Brown's two children. They over ruled Walter many
times and Zeb went along with his children. Walter came
home one day and told Helen "We are moving to
Florida, I have had all I am willing to put up with the
Brown family". They sold their home and moved to
Florida. He wasn't there long until he opened a business.
He bought out a paint store, and added towels, lady hose
and socks to the inventory. He would buy 50 lb boxes of
seconds from some of the hosiery mills in Hickory. He and
Helen would go through them and match them up by size and
colors, put them in small plastic bags and sell them for
.15 cents a pair. Lady's hose made up a very large part
of the sales. He did this for several years. When his son
Robert "Bobby" Sherrill got out of the US Air
Force and came to help out in the business. They bought a
men's clothing store in downtown Melbourne to expand the
business. Unfortunately The economy made a down turn and
a lot of people lost jobs in the area. They liquidated
the business and Walter retired. He did work for a while
for a convince store near his home just to have something
do. Walter and Helen moved to the Atlanta area when his
son was transferred there by a Electronics Company he was
working for. He died in a Athens Georgia Hospital. Walter
always loved the mountains. He had always told the family
"I do not want the family going through the grieving
with a funeral. The family can gather if they desire but
I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread in the
mountains of North Carolina, the most beautiful place I
have ever seen". These wishes were carried out.
Alice and I took Walter's ashes and Alice spread them on
Grandfather Mountain. [Kay Louise Sherrill McDaniels]
