He bought Carolina Industries in Oyama, Catawba County, North Carolina and built furniture for some years. He sold it to his brother Marshall, then opened a furniture store in Hickory, remaining there until retiring, turning it over to his son, Elmer. Alvan was buried in the St. Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, North Carolina. He and his wife Myrtle Lee Spencer Herman were the parents of five children.
