Matthias [Harmon] HERMAN113 was born about 1806 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.3,114,115 In 1850 he was a farmer in Newton Twp., Catawba County, NC.116 Occupation #2: farmer in 1860 in Hickory Tavern Twp., Catawba County, North Carolina.117 Property 250/90 He died after 1860 at the age of 54. Some of his sons moved to the south side of the mountain and lived at what is now called Fosco, N.C. Some of his grandsons helped build the Holy Cross Episcopal Church at Banner Elk, N.C. where they were members and some of the family are buried. Mathias and Anna lived out their lives and are presumed buried in St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery in the valley of Valle Crucis. Their nine children are: Anna (no record in 1850 census); Peter, b. 1839; Fanny, b. 1843 became Franny; Joseph b. 1845; Hiram b. 15 June 1847 -- d. 18 Jan 1929 rod. 1869 to Polly Selene Deitz, b. 12 May 1852 (see Hiram Herman Story); Abel b. 1849 married Nancy Townsend; Emaline, b. 1842 married a Farthing; E.lizabeth b. 1844 married Timothy Jackson Townsend. Elizabeth and Jackson's two oldest children are: Lawson E. age 4 and Cornelia, nine months, at the time of this record. Their family sometimes spoke their native Dutch language among themselves and spoke English to others.
