Gantt; a daughter Patricia Gantt Prince; two brothers, Claude Shook and Hugh Shook; and five sisters, Clyda Fox, Rosa Shook, Pearl Watts, Lena Fox and Gwyn Shook. She is survived by her son-in-law, Fred H. Prince of Granite Falls; two grandsons, Jeff Prince and wife, Denise, of Hudson and Kevin Prince and wife, Donna, of Granite Falls; two brothers, Ray Shook of Columbia, S.C., and Carroll Shook of Hickory; three sisters, Ruth Cook, Helen Martin and Frances Langley, all of Hickory; and three great-grandchildren, Maddi Prince of Hudson and Duncan Prince and Gantt Prince of Granite Falls. A private graveside service will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Claremont, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Ray officiating. He was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Hickory, N.C., the son of Jason Heber Shook and Zora Lanier Shook. Ray was a Korean War and Vietnam War veteran, serving his country for 20 years, and later retiring from Richland County. He was best known for his generosity and care for neighbors near and far, in partnership with his wife of 58 years, Regina Bauer Shook. SFC (Ret.) Shook is survived by his wife Regina; son, Rick Shook, of Hopewell, Va; daughter, Kay Cook and husband, Chris, of Columbia; grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Shook, along with their mother Janet Shook of Richmond, Va; grandchildren Andrew, Amy and Anna Beth Cook of Columbia; siblings, Ruth Cook, Frances (Howard) Langley, Helen (Walter) Martin, Carroll (Betty) Shook of Hickory; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Miller's Lutheran Church, where he was very faithful in various activities, and retired from the Service Department of Armstrong Ford.
