The following is written on page 169, the last page of the 1800 Currituck census:
Schedule of the whole number of persons within the Division allotted to Nathan Tatem, Marshal Assistant for Taking the Census or Enumeration of the Inhabitants of Currituck County in the state of North Carolina agreeable to an act of Congress Entitled an act providing for the second Census or Enumeration of the Inhabitants of the United States passed the 28th day of February 1800 -------- Indian Excepted.

The 1800 Federal Census was to reflect living status as of the first Monday in August, 1800.
The data on each page was to be arranged in columns as follows:
- Name of head of household.
- Number of free white males and females, in the following age brackets: under 10; 10-15; 16-25; 26-45; and over 45, including head of household.
- Number of all other free persons.
- Number of slaves.
The enumerator for Currituck County used the following shorthand for column headings:

Additional transcriber's notes:
- Aside from the usual variations in spellings of names, a few entries deserve special note:
--Mercer is spelled "Messor".
--Brickhouse is often spelled "Brichouse".
--Midgett/Midyett is spelled "Mydett"
--Scarborough is spelled "Scarber".
--Austin is found as "Auston", "Oston" and "Oyston".
--The given name Frances/Francis is often written as "Franes or Franis".
--The given name James is spelled "Jeams".
- There are numerous column tabulation errors.
- When an entry was made in error, the enumerator wrote over the error either with a zero ("0") or the correct number. Sometimes it is difficult to discern the intent.
