(WILLIAM JOHNSON, who had served as the first Sheriff of Bute Co., having been appointed by the Governor 10 June 1764, had been succeeded as Sheriff by JULIUS NICHOLS whose appointment as Sheriff was dated 8 May 1765. WILLIAM JOHNSON gave bond as Publick Register the same day he gave bond as Adminis - trator of the Estate of SUGAN JOHNSON, dec'd., XXIX Oct. 1765. However, the records show that the first deeds he reoorded were registered 11 Aug. 1766, see below. The only evidence of a changeover in the office of Public Register is that the top third of page 286 is left blank.)
