Subject: [NCWARREN] Roll Call--Duke, Dukes
I'm looking for information on James Duke, Benjamin Duke, and Robert Duke, who were in Granville County and then Warren when it was formed and
then in both counties as well as others. They came to North Carolina from Isle of Wight County, VA., and were all sons of John Duke II and
Bridget (Smith?).
Other sons were William and John, known as William of Brunswick and John Duke the Elder to Duke/s researchers. I have plenty of
information on William and John, and some on Robert, but not while he was in Granville/Warren. Land transactions show the presence of all
these men except for James and Benjamin.
They were in Granville County beginning about 1730 and then in Warren, where they remained until they died except for Robert, who went to
Northampton County. They died in Warren County between about 1751 and 1800. Many of their descendants remained in Warren County and
may still be there.
I am especially interested in James and Benjamin, as I have no information about them at all, other than a couple of brief appearances in some
scattered records.
I am also looking for a descendant of any of these men, Henry, who was born about 1775. DNA tests put him in this family, descendants of
John Duke of Isle of Wight County, VA.

I descend from Bennett Harris born ca 1787, died by Dec 1853 sale, Warren Co NC. Bennett married Lucy Dowtin, daughter of John Dowtin, a
Rev War patriot recognized by the NSDAR.
I believe that some of Bennett Harris family went west as we have been unable to determine for sure who he was the son of but my cousin who
wrote THE FAMILIES OF WARREN, FRANKILN, and GRANVILLE COUNTIES believed that he either descended from Robert Harris and Anne Fulgham thru
his son Robert Harris Jr who married Anne Williamson, daughter of Joseph Williamson or from Edward Harris born ca 1663. Robert
Harris who married Anne Fulgham was the brother of Edward Harris.
Thomas Harris ca 1636 > Robert Harris born ca 1674 & Anne Fulgham> Robert Harris Jr born ca 1719> Edmunds Harris died 1820 Warren

Subject: Re: [NCWARREN] Roll Call - PETTEWAY, GEE
PETTEWAY, John (1825-abt. 1913) and Julian (1830 - aft. 1900)
Looking for ancestors of John and Julian Petteway (brothers) who were first documented with the Petteway surname on the 1867 Voter
Registration List in Matagorda County Texas on the farm of James B. Hawkins, formerly of NC. Both, John and Julian were listed as born in NC and as
having lived in Texas, Matagorda County, and the precinct (Hawkinsville, Texas) for 22 years. Based on census records and the birth of James B.
Hawkins' first child born in Texas whose birth was abt. 1846/1847, James B. came at the same time.
Additionally, John and Julian (first names only) were listed on a Slave Manifest, November 1846, from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas with James B.
Hawkins as "owner". The information: age, height and color, matches information known by the families and descriptions on WWI Registration
information and the 1880 Census for Matagorda County Texas.
The only Petteway (Pettiway, Petaway, etc) in Warren County was John Pettiway who died in 1790, long before John and Julian were born -- my
ggrandfather John was born abt. 1825 and Julian abt. 1830. As far as we know, John Petteway, my relative, did not return to NC. He died in Texas ~
1913. His brother Julian was found on the 1900 Census for Warren County--Fork Township, along with one of John's daughters, Nettie (Antoinette)
who married Andrew Perry in Warren County in 1896. Because Julian "returned" to Warren County, we think there was a connection to Warren County.
Oral history indicates than Julian left Texas with Nettie when she was 8 years old, which would have been about 1883 or so. He died in Warren
County sometime after 1900.
So, we would like to know if there are any records that would indicate who were the parents or at least the mother of John and Julian. Were they
and their mother bought by the Hawkins or could they have been owned by the Alstons who were the parents of James B. Hawkins' wife, Ariella Alston
Hawkins, daughter of Willis Alston and Sallie Madeline Potts.
GEE, Carey (1823 - ) died sometime after 1895, but before 1900 in Matagorda County, Texas.
Carey was born in NC and according to the 1867 Voter Registration List, he had been in Texas for 35 years, which would make his arrival in Texas
about 1832, which was earlier than James B. Hawkins, whose ranch Carey was found in 1867.
As an aside and interestingly enough, I can find no connection between the Pettways of Gees Bend and my Gee or Petteway relatives
