WILLIAM HAGOOD and JOHN D. TUCKER- 1847 |
This Indenture made this 17th day of August 1847, between WM. HAGOOD
of the County of Warren No. Carolina of the one part, & JOHN D.
TUCKER of the same County & State of the other. Witnesseth that for
and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred dollars to the said
HAGOOD in hand paid at and before the ensealing & delivery of these
presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he the said
HAGOOD hath granted, bargained & sold & by these presents doth grant
bargain & sell unto the said TUCKER and his heirs a certain tract or
parcel of land lying & being in the County of Warren aforesaid on
both sides of Calvins Branch & bounded as follows "to wit" by
Blanton's Ferry Road on the East, by JAMES HAGOOD & J. O'K. MAYFIED
on the North, by the land of said MAYFIELD on the West & on the
South by the land of JNO. DALY & PETER R. DAVIS containing two
hundred acres more or less it being all that portion of the land
conveyed by PETER R. DAVIS to said WM. HAGOOD, which lies West of
Blanton's Ferry Road, except that part conveyed to JAMES HAGOOD, to
have & to hold thie said land unto the said TUCKER his heirs &
assigns, to the only proper use & behoof of the said TUCKER his
heirs & assigns forever. And the said WM HAGOOD doth for himself his
heirs & assigns convenant, promise & agree to and with the said
TUCKER his heirs and assigns, that he the said HAGOOD, will forever
warrant and defend the title to the premises, hereby bargained &
sold against the claim or claims of all & ever person or persons
whatsoever. In testimony whereof the said WM HAGOOD hath hereunto

THOMAS HAITHCOCK to ALLEN GREEN- 1865 |

This Indenture, made this the 5th day of January 1865, between
THOMAS HAITHCOCK of the County of Warren and State of North Carolina
of the one part, and ALLEN GREEN of the aforesaid County and State
of the other part, Witnesseth, that the said THOMAS HAITHCOCK, for
and in consideration of the sum of Forty five dollars, to him in
hand paid by the said ALLEN GREEN, the receipt of which is hereby
acknowledged, sold, aliened, enfeoffed, and confirmed, and by these
presents doth bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff, and confirm with the
said ALLEN GREEN, his heirs, and assigns forever, a certain tract or
parcel of land, situated, lying and being, in the said County of
Warren, and said State of North Carolina, containing about six and a
quarter acres, the said land being ISAAC WEST's portion of the tract
which he (ISAAC WEST) inherited from his father, NATHANIEL WEST, and
which was conveyed by deed bearing date the 12th day of May 1859,
from ISAAC WEST to THOMAS GREEN and which was conveyed by deed
bearing date the 28th day of August 1860, from THOMAS GREEN to
THOMAS HAITHCOCK, the said land adjoins the land of MILES BOBBITT,
NANCY E. HAITHCOCK, THOMAS HAITHCOCK and others. Now know all men by
these presents that THOMAS HAITHCOCK by this deed doth grant unto
ALLEN GREEN- the land herein described, to have and to hold,
together with all the improvements, and appertenances, thereunto
belonging, or in any wise appertaining, to the only proper use and
benefit of the said ALLEN GREEN and his heirs forever. And the said
THOMAS HAITHCOCK, doth for himself and his heirs covenant, and
agree, to warrant, and forever defend, the lawful title of said
land, to him the said ALLEN GREEN, his heirs, and assigns, against
the claim, or demand, of any person, or persons, whatsoever. In
witness whereof, the said THOMAS HAITHCOCK, doth hereunto set his
hand and affix his seal the day and year first above written. |

HENRY D. HARPER to JOHN T. KEARNEY- 1836 |
This Indenture made this tenth day of June in the year of Our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six between Henry Harper of
the County of Gibson, Tennessee of the one part and John T. Kearny
of the County of Warren and state of North Carolina of the other
part. Witnessed, that the said Henry D. Harper for and in
consideration of the sum of thirty dollars to him in hand paid by
the said John T. Kearny, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledging
hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell
unto the said Kearny his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract
or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Warren and state
of North Carolina containing ten acres, more or less and bounded as
follows beginning at a red oak on the road near by Edward Williams’
thence nearby a west course to the Deep Branch, corner black gum up
the said branch as it meanders to a white oak corner, nearby a south
course to a white oak on the road near John T. Kearney’s, thence
down the road to the beginning. To have and to hold the said
bargained land and premises with all privileges and appurtenances
thereto belonging unto the said Kearny his heirs and assigns
forever. And the said Henry G. Harper for himself his heirs and
assigns doth further covenant and agree to and with the said John T.
Kearny his heirs and assigns that he the said Henry G. Harper will
warrant and forever defend by these presents the above granted
premises from the lawful claim of all persons whatsoever. In witness
whereof the said Henry D. Harper hath hereunto set his hand and seal

This Indenture made this thirteenth day of June in the year of our
Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and thirty six between Henry D.
Harper of the County of Gibson, Tennessee of the one part and John
T. Kearney of the County of Warren & State of North Carolina of the
other part. Witnesseth, that the said Henry D. Harper for and in
consideration of the sum of thirty dollars to him in hand paid by
the said John T. Kearney, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell
unto the said Kearney his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract
or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Warren State of
North Carolina containing Ten acres, more or less and bounded as
follows. Beginning at a Red Oak on the road nearly oposite Edw'd
Williams; thence nearly a West course to the Deep Branch, corner
black gum, up said branch as it meanders to a white oak corner,
thence nearly a South course to a white oak on the road near John T.
Kearney's, thence down the road to the beginning. To have and to
hold the said bargained land and premises with all the privileges
and appurtenances thereto belonging unto the said Kearney his heirs
and assigns forever. And the said Henry D. Harper for himself his
heirs and assigns doth further covenant and agree to & with the said
John T. Kearney his heirs and assigns that he the said H. D. Harper
will warrant and forever defend by these presents the above granted
premises from the lawful claim of all persons whatsoever. In witness

(Page 424) This indenture made this 18th day of January A. D. 1834 between Priscilla Harper of the County of Gibson & State of Tennessee of the one part and John T. Kearny of the County of Warren & State of North Carolina of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Priscilla Harper for and in consideration of the sum of thirty dollars paid to her in hand the receipt whereof she does hereby acknowledge herself thereby fully satisfied and paid hath given, granted, bargained, sold, conveyed and confirmed & by these presents doth fully and absolutely give, grant, bargain & sell unto him said Kearny his heirs & assigns forever a parcel of land bounded as follows, Viz. Beginning at a Red Oak in the Road and thence along the road South West to a white oak on the east side of the road ; thence a Northwardly course to the Deep Branch thence down said branch to a white oak & black gum & from thence to the beginning corner containing 10 (Ten) acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold unto him the said Kearny his heirs and assigns forever & I the said Priscilla Harper her heirs and assigns do warrant & forever defend the right and title of the aforesaid parcel of (Page 425) land to him the said John T. Pricilla Harper to John T. Kearney This Indenture made this 18th day of January 1834 between Priscilla Harper of the County of Gibson and state of Tennessee of the one part and John T. Kearny of the County of Warren and state of North Carolina of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Priscilla Harper for and in consideration of the sum of thirty dollars paid to her in hand the receipt whereof she does hereby acknowledge herself thereby fully satisfied and hath given, granted, bargained, sold conveyed and confirmed and by these presents doth fully and absolutely give, grant, bargain and sell unto him the said Kearny his heirs and assigns forever a parcel of land bounded as follows, Viz. beginning at a red oak in the road and thence along the road to a white oak on the east side of the road thence a Northwardly course to the Deep Branch thence down in said branch to a white oak and black gum and from thence to the beginning corner containing 10 (ten) acres be the same more or less. (Page 360) State of North Carolina No. 35 To all to whom these presents shall come, greeting know ye, that we, for and in consideration of the sum of fifty shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted, paid unto our treasury by Samuel Harper have given and granted, and by these presents do give and grant unto the said Samuel Harper a tract of land, containing one hundred and seventy-five acres, lying and being in our County of Warren on the North side of Reedy Creek beginning at a white oak on the said creek and on the North side the Baptist Meeting House Road at the letter A thence down said road a consentable line North 25 degrees east & 60 poles thence North 20 degrees East 62 poles to a black jack in the road thence North 45 degrees East & 13 poles to a stump in Jones' old line thence by Person's line North 14 degrees West & 124 poles to a white oak thence Newell's line South 20 degrees West & 23 poles to a hickory thence his other line (Page 361) North 20 degrees West & 6 poles to a hickory on the North side of Person's road thence up the road joining Newell's North 70 degrees West 64 poles to a blackjack near the head of Great Branch thence down said branch South 10 degrees West & 135 poles to a white oak on the afore mentioned Creek thence down the windings of the Creek to the first Station, witnessed Richard Caswell, Esq.; our Governor Captain General and commander in Chief at Kingston, the twentieth day of September in the fourth year of our Independence, and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine. Know all men by these presents that I, JAMES Y. HARRIS of Warren
County, North Carolina for and in consideration of the natural love
and affection I have for my daughter MARTHA J. E. NICHOLSON wife of
ADKIN NICHOLON of the same County and State aforesaid and for and in
consideration of the sum of one dollar to one in hand paid by the
said ADKIN NICHOLSON, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge
have given, granted sold, and delivered to the said NICHOLSON the
following property(to wit) one Negro girl EMILY age seventeen
years, one Negro girl POLLY Ten years of age, both daughters
of AMY, also one boy CLABORNE age eight years son of
HARRIET, then and their future increase. I do forever warrant
and defend the right and title of said Negroes, free from all
claims, to him the said NICHOLSON, his heirs, Executors, Adm'rs &c.

This Indenture made this 15th day of March in the year of Our Lord
One thousand eight hundred and sixty one between THOMAS E. HARRIS of
the County of Warren and State of North Carolina of the first part,
and LUCAS LANCASTER of the second part and CHARLES M. COOK of the
County and State aforesaid of the third part, Witnesseth that
whereas the said THOMAS E. HARRIS is justly indebted to the said
LUCAS LANCASTER in the sum of sixteen hundred twenty two Dollars and
ninety seven cents due by bond executed on the 15th day of March
1861, and due and payable one day after date and the said THOMAS E.
HARRIS being willing and desirous to secure the debt due to the said
LUCAS LANCASTER as above described with the interest that may be due
thereon. Now this Indenture witnesseth that for and in consideration
of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by the said CHARLES M.
COOK, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and the said
THOMAS E. HARRIS hath bargained, sold and made over, unto the said
CHARLES M. COOK his heirs, executors and administrators, one certain
tract or parcel of land whereon I now live, lying and being in the
County of Warren and State aforesaid and adjoining the lands of WM.
MORGAN POWELL, MARK P. PERRY, LUCAS LANCASTER and Others, containing
by estimation Five hundred and twenty five acres, be the same more
or less also all my stock of horses and cattle, also all my right
and interest in three Negroes and their increase (vizt) MARGARET
and her two children and I the said THOMAS E. HARRIS doth
moreover covenant, promise and to and with the said CHARLES M. COOK
his heirs, executors and administrators that I will warrant and
defend the right and title of the aforesaid land and premises and
all the other property herein mentioned to him the said CHARLES M.
COOK, his heirs, executors and administrators upon special trust and
confidence that is to say if the said THOMAS E. HARRIS shall well
and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said LUCAS LANCASTER the
above debt and interest mentioned in this instrument on or before
the 1st day of September next, then the above obligation is to be
void, but if he fails so to do so then and in that case it shall and
may be lawful for the said CHARLES M. COOK to make sale of the
aforesaid tract of land and other property at public sale by first
giving twenty days notice of the time and place of all and out of
the proceeds of said sale to pay the said LUCAS LANCASTER the amount
of his debt and interest that may be due thereon and all cost
attending the execution of this business and the overplus, if any,
to pay to the said THOMAS E. HARRIS or his heirs. In witness whereof
I the said THOMAS E. HARRIS have hereunto set my hand and seal the

Know all men by these presents that I PETER HARRISON of Warren
County and State of North Carolina for and in consideration of the
sum of seventy eight pounds five shillings & 2d to me in hand paid
by RICH'D RUSSELL of the County and State aforesaid the receipt
whereof I the said PETER HARRISON do hereby acknowledge myself to be
entirely satisfy'd have bargained sold and delivered and by these
presents doth absolutely bargain sell and deliver unto the said
RICH'D RUSSELL his heirs and assigns forever two Negroes (to wit)
ABRAM aged about fifty years and FRANK his wife aged
about fifty years old and I the said PETER HARRISON do for myself my
heirs and assigns &c warrant and forever defend the wright and title
of the above Negroes to be free and clear of all incumbrance
whatsoever unto the said RICHARD RUSSELL his heirs and assigns
forever In witness whereof I the said PETER HARRISON have hereunto

JOSEPH W. HAWKINS to THOMAS FLEMING- 1835 |
Know all men by these presents that I JOSEPH W. HAWKINS for and in
consideration of the sum of Six hundred and fifty dollars to me in
hand paid by THOMAS FLEMING, bargained & sold, and by these presents
do bargain and sell and deliver to the said THOMAS one certain Negro
man slave named JOE about thirty eight or nine years old. And
I hereby warrant and defend the right and title to said Negro JOE
to be for the use benefit and behoof of him the said THOMAS FLEMING
and his heirs forever. Given under my hand and seal this 7th day of

MATTHEW HAWKINS to JOHN D HAWKINS- 1820 |
This Indenture made this Seventeenth day of December Eighteen
hundred and twenty by and between MATT MATTHEW a man of colour freed
by Warren County in the name of MATTHEW HAWKINS of the one part and
JOHN D. HAWKINS of the County of Franklin and state of No. Carolina
of the other part, witnesseth whereas old COL. PHILEMON HAWKINS in
his life time made and executed certain deeds bearing date in the
year Eighteen hundred, purporting to be deeds of Gifts, one to his
Grandson PHILEMON son of JOHN, for that part of the manor Plantation
lying between the two little Creeks including the houses together
with other property, as by reference to said deed will better
appear, one other deed to the afore'd MATTHEW for the land lying on
the East of Mill Creek on the Warrenton Road and other property as
by reference to said deed will better appear. And one other deed to
AMY freed by Warren County Court by the name of AMY HONESTY for the
land where JESSE BECKHAM lived on the North side of Little Mill
Creek adjoining JACK GREEN together with other property as will
better appear by reference to said deed in which latter deed to AMY
the land aforesaid is conveyed to her for life in remainder to
MATTHEW aforesaid, And whereas the will of old COL. PHILEMON HAWKINS
aforesaid the said MATTHEW is given a legacy of a tract of land to
include HOWELL's improvements and other property as by reference to
said will, will better appear. But which Legacy aforesaid is not
intended to be given if the aforesaid MATTHEW claims under the
aforesaid deeds. And whereas the said MATTHEW has elected to claim
under the deeds aforesaid and not the will aforesaid. Now this
Indenture witnesseth that the said MATTHEW alias MATTHEW HAWKINS for
and in consideration of one hundred and Twenty Dollars in hand paid
a receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged from the said JOHN D.
HAWKINS hath, bargained sold and delivered and by these presents
doth bargain, sell and deliver to the said JOHN D. HAWKINS his heirs
and assigns forever all the property both real and personal which
the said MATTHEW has as heir at Law or in any manner has claim &
right under the deeds aforesaid from old COL. PHILEMON HAWKINS dec'd
to AMY HONESTY aforesaid. And also all the personal Estate mentioned
in the aforesaid deed to MATTHEW from old COL. HAWKINS aforesaid,
the said MATTHEW reserving to himself the land only mentioned in the
aforesaid deed from old COL. HAWKINS aforesaid to him. To have and
to hold the aforesaid property both real personal to the said JNO D.
HAWKINS his heirs and assigns forever. In witness whereof the said MATTHEW HAWKINS hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and date above. This agreement made this the 10th day of January Eighteen hundred
and fifty three by and between PETER B. HAWKINS one of the Executors
of JOSEPH W. HAWKINS, of the County of Granville and State of North
Carolina of the one part and JAMES BALL of the County of Warren and
State of North Carolina of the other part, Witnesseth that the said
PETER B. HAWKINS Ex'r has for and in consideration of the sum of
five hundred and sixty dollars the receipt of which is hereby
acknowledged, hath bargained, and sold and doth by these presents
bargain, grant, and sell unto the said JAMES BALL one certain tract
or parcel of land lying being and situated as follows, Beginning at
a post oak on the East side of the road leading from JOHN EDWARDS'
place, HARTON's old Tavern) to the JOHN D. HAWKINS Mill, south 50
East 203 poles to a poplar thence East 101 poles to a white oak
thence south 2° East 52 poles to pine and post oak, thence west 284
poles to a black jack on said Road, thence the meanders of said road
to the beginning containing one hundred and sixty acres more or
less, adjoining the lands of said PETER B. HAWKINS, SAMUEL VINES and
said JAMES BALL, to him the said JAMES BALL his heirs and assigns
forever forever[sic] in withness whereover I hereunto set my hand
and seal this the 10th day of January Eighteen hundred and fifty

This Indenture made this 26th day of February A.D. 1822 between
PHILEMON HAWKINS of Franklin County & State of North Carolina of the
one part & ADAM HAWKINS of the County & State aforesaid of the other
part, witnesseth that the said PHILEMON HAWKINS for & in
consideration of the sum of one hundred & Seventy six Dollars to him
in hand paid by the said ADAM HAWKINS, the Receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged; hath granted bargained & sold to the said ADAM HAWKINS
one Lot or piece of ground in the Town of Warrenton adjoining the
Lots of GEORGE ANDERSON & WM McRORIE which lot with all the
improvements and appurtenances thereto belonging I do warrant &
defend to the sd ADAM HAWKINS his heirs Executors or administrators,
against the claim or demand of all persons whatsoever. In witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hands & seals the day & date first

WILLIAM HAWKINS to SAMUEL DUKE- 1859 |
This Indenture made this the second day of April one Thousand eight
hundred and fifty nine, Between WILLIAM HAWKINS (a free person of
colour) of Warren County and State of North Carolina of the one
part, and SAMUEL DUKE of said County and State of the other part,
Witnesseth: Whereas I the said WILLIAM HAWKINS (the said free person
of colour) about twenty five or six years of age of sound mind and
judgment, being desirous of binding myself to the said SAMUEL DUKE
and his heirs, and I do now of my own voluntary act without
compulsion from any source whatsoever, bind myself, during my life
to the said SAMUEL DUKE his heirs and assigns, absolute to be under
his control and command as an honest and faithful servant, and I the
said SAMUEL DUKE are to feed, clothe and treat the said WILLIAM
HAWKINS as other men do (there) their servants and I the said
WILLIAM HAWKINS are not to be absent myself from the said SAMUEL
DUKE's employment without leave, and if I should hereafter work for
any other person without leave from the said SAMUEL DUKE or his
heirs, this is to authorize the said SAMUEL DUKE or his heirs to
collect the money that I may earn in his or their name to his or
their own proper use and benefit, and his or their receipt shall be
good in discharge of the debt or debts that may or should be owing
to me, and I do by these presence claim nothing more than the
servants of the said SAMUEL DUKE. Given under my hand and seal the

WILLIAM HAYES to JOHN W. HAYES- 1857 |
Know all men by these presents, that I WILLIAM HAYES of the County
of Warren and State of North Carolina, in consideration of the love
and affection I bear to my son JOHN W. HAYES of the County and State
aforesaid and for divers other good and valid considerations, do
hereby give, grant, confirm, and convey unto the said JNO W. HAYES
the following Negro slaves to wit: WILL, JIM, ELIZA, EDWARD,
LYDIA, NANCY PETER, ANDERSON, JOHN, ELIJA SPRIG, CEASAR, NATHAN,
NICHOLAS, CENY, MARY an also the sum of six Thousand and Two
hundred and twenty six Dollars, and thirty five cents due me by
bonds from different persons, The exact amount of which and from
whom due will more fully appear by reference to the bonds
themselves. To have and to hold all the above property to him his
heirs and assigns forever. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my

WILLIAM HOWELL sells to JOHN
DICKERSON certain land on the south side of Sandy Creek. 1786 |
This Indenture made this the 13th day of March in
the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Six,
between William Howell of the County of Warren and province of North
Carolina of the one part and John Dickerson of the County of
Granville & province aforesaid of the other part. W(here)forth that
the said William Howell have sold granted & offered & confirmed for
and in consideration of the sum of sixty six pounds thirteen & four
pence to the said John Dickerson his heirs and assigns forever One
certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the said County
of Warren on the south side of Sandy Creek & bound as follows.
Beginning at a pine upon the north side of the road running from
Granville Court House to Warren Court House thence down the said
road a line of marked trees to the head of a small branch thence up
the said branch as it meanders to the fork thence to the first
station it being part of a tract of land grant by the Earle
Granville’s agents to the said William Howell containing by
estimation in the whole one hundred acres more or less with the
reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders, rents benefits
and services whatever of them the said William Howell to the only
proper use and behoof 1 of him the said John Dickerson his heirs and
assigns forever and then the said William Howell doth covenant and
agree to warrant and defend the aforesaid bargained premises and way
past thereof from the lawful claim of any person or persons to only
proper use and behoof of him the said John Dickerson his heirs and
assigns forever and to be at this day free and clear from all manner
of encumbrances. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal

JACOB W. HOLT to JOHN J. VAUGHAN- 1854 |
This Indenture made
this day between JACOB W. HOLT of the Town of Warrenton and State of
North Carolina of the one part and JOHN J. VAUGHAN of the said Town
of Warrenton and State of North Carolina of the other part
witnesseth that the said JACOB W. HOLT for and in consideration of
the sum of fifty dollars cash in hand paid, hath this day bargained
and sold to the said JOHN J. VAUGHAN a certain tract or parcel of
land consisting of ten acres more or less lying and situate in the
County of Warren and State of North Carolina and bounded by the land
of THOMAS A. MONTGOMERY on the South ABNER AYCOCK on the West DR.
JOHN D. PLUNKETT on the North and the road leading from Warrenton to
the Warrenton Depot on the East, the right and title to the said
land I warrant and defend to the said JOHN J. VAUGHAN to him his
heirs and assigns forever. Given under my hand and seal this the
