Daniel Pegram - Warren Co., North Carolina

Second Generation

3.  Mary Pegram (Daniel-1)   was born about 1743.  She died in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Mary Pegram and Francis Riggan were married in Jun 1759.  Francis Riggan was born about 1730 in Virginia.  He died in 1818 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Francis Riggan Sr. was probably born in Virginia about 1730 and migrated to northeastern North Carolina about 1759 and settled in Granville Co, later Bute Co, later Warren Co. He married Mary Pegram in June 1759, about the same time he was deeded 180 acres  by the father of his new wife, Daniel Pegram.

In 1760 he carried chains for Thomas Person, Surveyor for Lord Granville, in 1769 he was appointed Surveyor of Roads in Bute Co. In 1772 he is referred to in Court of Pleas & Quarters records as an "overseer" of roads and in 1777 he as appointed Tax Assessor for Bute Co.

In January 1779 he was one of the original petitioners who signed the "Petition for the Division of Bute Co.," which was presented to the North Carolina General Assembly and ratified at that time.

Francis Sr. died about 1818 and left his which is recorded in Warren Co in Will Book 21 Page 108.  Mary Pegram and Francis Rigganhad the following children:

+10                      i.    Pricilla Riggan, born about 1759; married Wilmot Egerton, on 18 Apr 1808, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1830, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+11                     ii.    William Pegram Riggan, born in 1761; married Mary Crenshaw, on 16 Nov 1787, Warren Co., North Carolina; died on 29 Dec 1838.

12                    iii.    Molly Riggan was born about 1763.

+13                    iv.    Francis B. Riggan, born on 7 Mar 1764; married Ann Harris, on 1 Apr 1789, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Elizabeth Pegram, on 7 Oct 1816, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Mary Partin, on 13 Apr 1830, Halifax Co., North Carolina; died by 1846.

+14                     v.    Daniel Riggan, born about 1765; married Mary Frances Harper, on 31 Jan 1798, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1832, Tennessee.

+15                    vi.    Betsy Riggan, born about 1768; married Benjamin Robertson (Roberson), on 27 Mar 1812.

+16                   vii.    Frances Riggan, born about 1780; married William Rooker, on 25 Feb 1819, Warren Co., North Carolina.

4.  Daniel Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1745 in Virginia.  He died on 13 Sep 1827 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Daniel Pegram and his wife, Agnes Jones are the ancestors of many family members from Rockingham Co., North Carolina and Pegram, Tennessee area.

The Bute Co., North Carolina court records reflect that in May 1769 " On petition of Daniel Pegram Jr. for leave to take child laid to him born of the body of Rebecca Mangum. Ordered that child be put into his father Daniel Pegrum's family to be raised and brought up". We think we have found Daniel's "baseborn" child mentioned in the court records.  There is a tombstone located on the banks of Haw River in Guilford Co. in an abandoned cemetery that reads "Here lyeth the body of Rachel Pegram who departed this life the X day of Sept 1789 Age 26 yrs" That would place her birth date circa 1763 and there is simply no one else that would fit.  Daniel would have been married to Agnes Jones by this time so Rachel could not be his wife and she is too old to be anyone's daughter.  No doubt she traveled with Daniel and his family when they made their first excursion to Guilford Co. and died on the trip or shortly after their arrival.

Daniel was crippled in Battle at Alamance which is known as the North Carolina Regulators War. He was later awarded a pension of 20 pounds a year. The following is from the Bute Co., Court Records for Nov. 13, 1778:

"Whereas in the year 1771 a resolve of assembly was passed for the allowing the sum of twenty pounds a year to several pensioners on a Military Establishment (they being wounded soldiers) and Daniel Pegram being one of the said list of Pensioners and hath for five years received the sum of his said pension, and he being as their court conceives Still a fit object for a continuance of the pension aforesaid, and they taking his Case and Circumstances into consideration, they do hereby recommend him to the next assembly as one who is fully deserving from his misfortune to have his pension aforesaid continued to him, from the time it first ceased."

Again on November 10, 1779 we find the following:

"Ordered that the Treasurer pay Daniel Pegram the sum of Twenty pounds Current money of this State yearly, for four years to this date as his pension for being Crippled in the battle at the Allimance and still remaining as such."

Daniel left Warren Co., between 1789 as evidenced by the above referenced tombstone and 1808 and resettled in present Rockingham/Guilford Co., North Carolina area where he purchased a small tract of land that he later sold to his son, Gideon Pegram. Daniel may have briefly gone to Tennessee  with his son Daniel but if so, he returned to North Carolina  where he died in 1827. His wife, Agnes Jones survived him and is found on the 1830 census of Rockingham Co., North Carolina. living beside her son, Gideon Pegram. She apparently died before the 1840 census was taken.

Daniel Pegram and Agnes Jones were married about 1778 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Agnes Jones (daughter of Samuel Jones and Agnes Nee) died before 1840 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.  Notes for Agnes Jones:  Thomas Jones  of Bute Co., Colony of North Carolina releases his claim to share of  Estate  of Samuel Jones deceased to his Mother, Agness Jones  and his  brothers and sisters for 45 pds.  Wit : Joseph Williams, Jos. Busby &  Jonathan Riggan. April 27, 1772, recorded Aug. Ct. 1793. (Warren Co., North Carolina WB: 242). Agreement in division of Estate of Samuel Jones, dec'd. Agnis Jones, Widow to have lifetime use of negroes belonging to her sons and daughters:  William Jones, Thomas Bell, Henry Jones, Agnis & Sally Jones in exchange for their having the 1/3 of the land which their Mother now has as her share.  Wit: Daniel  Pegram & William Clements. Proved by  James Paine,, Esq. who swore to the handwriting of Daniel Pegram, dec'd.  Dated 13 May 1772 not recorded until 1792. (Warren Co., North Carolina WB6:255)  NOTE:  Both of the above were not recorded for some reason until 20 years after they were executed. Based on this, it would appear that Daniel Pegram married Agnes Jones after the date of this partition which was 1772.  They were married before his father died in 1776. Based on above we can also tell that Agnes Jones Pegram was the daughter of Samuel Jones.  Daniel Pegram and Agnes Jones had the following children:

+17                      i.    Henry (Harris) Pegram, born about 1779, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Nancy Harris, on 18 Mar 1799, Warren Co., North Carolina; died Warren Co., North Carolina.

+18                     ii.    Gideon Pegram, born about 1780, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Delilah Pegram, on 10 Feb 1809, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died after 1850, Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

+19                    iii.    Daniel Pegram, born about 1782, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Lucy Milam, on 10 Dec 1800, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1819, Stewart Co., Tennessee.

+20                    iv.    Mary Pegram, born on 28 Nov 1783, Warren Co., North Carolina; married John Medaris, in 1808, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died on 7 Jul 1877, Wayne Co., Indiana.

+21                     v.    Agnes Pegram, born in 1791, Warren Co., North Carolina; married George Gates, on 14 Feb 1820.

+22                    vi.    Zachariah Pegram, born in 1802, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Cynthia Lancaster, on 1 Jan 1824, Warren Co., North Carolina; died Hyde Co., North Carolina.

5.  George Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1750 in Virginia.  He died in 1825 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Lucretia Bell was born.  We have not been able to document the wife of George Pegram from extant public records although other family members in the Warren County, North Carolina area have given her name as Lucretia Bell. We are aware of the existence of additional contemporary records that are still in the hands of descendants of George Pegram in the Warren County, North Carolina area and it is possible  these records may be the source of the name of George's wife.  We are in contact with family members who are trying to obtain copies of these records to share with all our Pegram cousins.  Until we find further documentation, placing Lucretia Bell as the wife of George Pegram is merely heresay.  George Pegram and Lucretia Bell had the following children:

+23                      i.    John Pegram, born on 12 Feb 1771, Bute Co., North Carolina; married Parthenia (aka Parthena & Patty) Bell, about 1790; died on 3 Apr 1836, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+24                     ii.    William Pegram, born about 1778, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Nancy Riggan, on 28 Jan 1808, Warren Co., North Carolina; died about 1876, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+25                    iii.    George Pegram, born about 1780, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Clarissa Lancaster, on 14 Dec 1803, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1832, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+26                    iv.    Thomas Pegram, born about 1782, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Elizabeth (Betsy) Riggan, on 8 May 1811, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1816, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+27                     v.    Nancy Pegram, born about 1784; married Jacob Bell, on 24 Dec 1800, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before 1850, Robertson Co., Tennessee.

28                    vi.    Sarah "Sally" Pegram was born about 1788 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

29                   vii.    Martha Pegram was born about 1790 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died about 1850 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

30                  viii.    Lucretia Pegram was born about 1792 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died about 1850 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

6.  Gideon Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1755 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1823 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Gideon Pegram filed a guardian account for the orphans of John Harton February Court 1808--the year Daniel came of age.  The record is on file in the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh.  He was appointed Guardian to Daniel at the August Court in 1801 and paid bond for 1000 pds to Wyatt Hawkins, Dudley Clanton, and Gideon H. Macon, Justices. Security: Burwell  Harton Witness Wm Robards.

Will Book 25 page  226, of Warren County, North Carolina has Gideon's Will wherein he devises to his daughter Patsy Nicholson the land "bought of Gideon Harton and Thomas Harton formerly the lands of John Harton".  To granddaughter Martha  A. Vaughan after death of Charity he left  "lands beginning at George  Pegram's at the head of Mirey Branch down to Hobquarter Creek also one feather bed and good furniture"  Gideon Pegram served in the American Revolution. Although we find  records indicating that all 4 sons of Daniel Pegram served in some  capacity, Gideon is the only one we have found on a roster.

Gideon Pegram and Charity Harton were married in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Charity Harton (daughter of Thomas Harton and Mary Bell) was born about 1760 in Bute Co., North Carolina.  She died after 1823 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Charity Harton was the daughter of Thomas Harton and his wife Mary Bell, daughter of Thomas Bell and wife Mary Thompson.

The will of Thomas Harton was dated 28 January 1795, probated February Court, 1795 and recorded in WB8:26.  He names wife Mary Harton, sons Howel Harton, Thomas Harton, John Harton, Burrel Harton and Hardy, and daughters Mary Jones, Charity Pegram and Lucy Harton.  Gideon Pegram and Charity Harton had the following children:

+31                      i.    Elizabeth Pegram, born in 1785, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Peyton Vaughan, on 20 Apr 1809, Warren Co., North Carolina; died after 1870.

+32                     ii.    Martha L. (Patsey) Pegram, born in 1793, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Benjamin Nicholson, on 17 Mar 1812, Warren Co., North Carolina.

7.  Edward Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1759 in Granville Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1802 in Belews Creek, Forsyth Co., North Carolina.

Edward Pegram and Patty Jean were married on 23 Aug 1779 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Patty Jean (daughter of William Jean and Huldah Edmonds) was born in Brunswick Co., Virginia.  She is also identified as Martha Jaynes in LDS records.  Edward Pegram and Patty Jean had the following children:

33                      i.    Mary (Polly) Pegram was born.

34                     ii.    Elizabeth (Betsy) Pegram was born.

+35                    iii.    Delilah Pegram, born about 1781, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Gideon Pegram, on 10 Feb 1809, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died after 1850, Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

+36                    iv.    Nancy Rand Pegram, born on 18 Jun 1788, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married David Barrow Ferguson, in 1807, North Carolina; married Samuel Jewel, about 1840; died on 25 May 1858, Timber Creek, Marshall Co., Iowa.

+37                     v.    John Pegram, born on 19 Jun 1790, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Candace Walker, on 21 Sep 1813; married Elizabeth Lawrence, on 15 Apr 1825, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 26 Feb 1851, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+38                    vi.    William Pegram, born about 1793, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Fanny McKenny, about 1815, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died in 1822, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+39                   vii.    George Pegram, born on 17 Aug 1795, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married Elizabeth Knott, on 16 Jan 1817; married Mary Talley, on 10 May 1862, Greensboro, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 20 Jun 1875, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

8.  Martha (Patty) Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1760 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Martha (Patty) Pegram and Thomas Bell were married on 12 Nov 1782 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Thomas Bell (son of Thomas Bell and Unknown) was born on 1 Jan 1760 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1847 in Tennessee.  This Thomas Bell represents the 3rd generation in Warren Co., The first Thomas Bell who died in 1761 was married to Mary Thompson. They had a son, Thomas Bell, who died in 1782. The second Thomas Bell was married to a daughter of Samuel Jones and wife Agnes who were also the parents of Daniel Pegram's wife,  Agnes Jones.

Thomas Bell (2) left his Will dated 26 May 1782, probated November Court 1782 and recorded in WB3:159.  He names sons Thomas Bell, John Bell, William Bell and Muntford Bell and daughter Patty.  He left a life estate to his wife, not named.  Sons William Bell and Muntford Bell are identified as being minors. Executors were Henry Jones, Jesse Bell and Daniel Pegram.  Witnesses were John Colclough, John Harton and Daniel Pegram.

The 1800 Census of Warren Co. shows that Thomas Bell and wife Martha have 2 sons.  One is between 10 and 15 and the other is 16 to 25. They have 2 daughters between 10 and 15 which we have not identified. In 1810, there are no males left in the home.  We know that Thomas, Jr. and his new wife are living close by.  John is not found in Warren Co. in 1810 and may have left with other family members who had already started westward.

Thomas Bell (3) and his wife Martha Pegram, together with the familiy of their adult son, Thomas , went to Tennessee shortly after the turn of the century along with Daniel Pegram (Martha's nephew) who had married Lucy Milam. Many of Lucy Milam's family traveled with them. Also in this migration was John Bell who we believe was a brother of Thomas Bell.  The Pegrams, Bells and Milams all lived within shouting distance of  each other in Warren Co., and soon settled within shouting distance of  each other in what is now Cheatham Co., Tennessee.  Unfortunately for anyone researching these families, they began spreading to other areas shortly after arriving in Tennessee.

John Bell, who we believe to be a  brother of Thomas Bell (3) is of interest since his descendants subsequently married back into the Pegram family.  Martha (Patty) Pegram and Thomas Bell had the following children:

+40                      i.    Thomas Bell, born on 10 Oct 1788, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Judith Shearin, on 12 Dec 1809, Warren Co., North Carolina; died on 13 Jan 1867, Cheatham Co., Tennessee.

9.  Sarah Pegram (Daniel-1) was born about 1761 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died in 1800 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Sarah appears to be a later child born to Daniel and Frances Pegram. This is based on the fact that it is not likely John Harton would have married the much older Sarah born in 1741 and also that Sarah born in 1841 would not likely be the mother of their youngest child, John Harton, born in 1790.

Sarah Pegram and John Harton were married on 9 Nov 1780 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  John Harton (son of Thomas Harton and Mary Bell) was born in 1760 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1794 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  John Harton was the son of Thomas Harton and wife Mary Bell and the grandson of Thomas Bell and wife Mary (Thompson) Bell. John was witness to the will of Thomas Bell  26 May 1782 (Warren Co., North Carolina WB3) along with John Colclough, Jesse Bell, and Daniel Pegram.

In Deed Book 12, p 287 there is a record of John Harton buying land from Mary Bell and later   getting clearance from Montfort Bell, son of Thomas Bell, Jr. The date was Jan 1793 and the record shows Mary Bell, Thomas Bell, John Bell, William Bell, and Montfort Bell selling 20 acres to John Harton for 72 pounds Virginia  money " land willed to said Bells by Thomas Bell decd., lying on Hubquarter's Creek... It is further described as "beginning at the mouth of Plant Patch  branch thence up the sd branch to a hickory, John Harton's corner thence to Henry Jones'  line then to branch called barn branch, thence down the sd branch to the creek  then up the creek to the mouth of plant patch branch to the beginning being the land whereon the sd Thos. Bell decd formerly lived".  Witnessed by Geo. Nicholson, Burwell Harton and Gideon Pegram. This land adjoined the land Sarah (Salley) Pegram was willed by her father, Daniel Pegram.

The Will of Thomas Harton dated January 28, 1795; probated at February Court 1795 and recorded in Volume 8, Page 26 Will Books of Warren County, North Carolina gives 112 1/2 acres where he now lives to his son Howel Harton and provides that Howel Harton is to pay 6 pounds and 5 shillings to the children of John Harton.  It names his wife, Mary Harton, sons Thomas Harton, John Harton, Burrel Harton.

On 29 Aug 1804 John Harton, orphan of John Harton aged about 13 was apprenticed to Gideon Pegram till age 21 to "learn the art of being a planter." (Warren Co., North Carolina WB 12, P243). Gideon Pegram was an uncle to this John Harton since John's sister, Charity Harton married Gideon Pegram.  Sarah Pegram and John Harton had the following children:

+41                      i.    Daniel Harton, born in 1787, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Lavenia Hicks, in 1815, probably Robertson Co., Tennessee; died in Sep 1826, Jackson, Madison Co., Tennessee.

+42                     ii.    Gideon Harton, born on 21 Apr 1789, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Dorothy (Dolly) King Harris, on 27 Jul 1810, Warren Co., North Carolina; died after 1870, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+43                    iii.    John P. Harton, born in 1791, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before Jan 1838, Jackson, Madison Co., Tennessee.

+44                    iv.    Thomas Harton, born in 1793, Warren Co., North Carolina; died on 3 Aug 1863, Canton, Madison Co., Mississippi.

John Egerton married Elizabeth Nicholson  in Surry Co., Va., Nov 27 1726. She was daughter  of James and Elizabeth Gray Nicholson. James Nicholson died in 1723 and his widow, Elizabeth, married Richard Andrews, who died circa 1750. Since Henry did not leave a Will, the only documentation for a child of record is Gideon. However, based on the Census records and by process of elimination, we are calling Henry ( 2)  a child of Henry. Henry (2)  was born in 1806 based on the 1850 Census record.

They traveled with all of their belongings in  2 one horse wagons. They settled in the site of Old Salisbury, then  later moved to Centerville. Their descendants have lived in the area  of  Wayne Co., ever since. Mary died on 7 July 1877 in Indiana. The children from John's first marriage to Susannah, moved to Carroll Co., Georgia around 1826 as the land was ceded from the Creek Indians.

In 1850, 1860 and 1870, Mary is found living with her daughter, Nancy Crooks, in Center, Wayne Co., Indiana.

Mary Pegram and John Medaris were married in 1808 in Stokes Co., North Carolina.  John Medaris (son of Charles Medaris and Elizabeth "Betsy" Gregory) was born about 1765.  He died in 1823.  Mary Pegram and John Medaris had the following children:

21.  Agnes Pegram (Daniel-2, Daniel-1) was born in 1791 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  In 1830, Agnes was already a widow living in Rockingham Co. The 1830 Cenus shows she has one son under 5, one son under 10 and 1 daughter under 10.  This agrees with the 1850 Census except the 1850 Census shows that William is age 17.

Agnes Pegram and George Gates were married on 14 Feb 1820.  Their marriage bond is from Guilford Co. but the marriage records is in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.  George Gates died before 1830 in North Carolina.  Agnes Pegram and George Gates had the following children:

+77                      i.    Sally Gates, born in 1824, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married Allen Powell, in May 1856, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

78                     ii.    Jackson Gates was born in 1827 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

79                    iii.    William Gates was born in 1833 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

22.  Zachariah Pegram (Daniel-2, Daniel-1)  was born in 1802 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in Hyde Co., North Carolina.

Zachariah Pegram and Cynthia Lancaster were married on 1 Jan 1824 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Cynthia Lancaster was born about 1806 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died in Hyde Co., North Carolina.  Cynthia Lancaster was the daughter of Willie Lancaster by his first wife. In 1870, Cynthia was found living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and William B. Smith.  Zachariah Pegram and Cynthia Lancaster had the following children:

+80                      i.    Julia Ann Pegram, born in 1824, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Seth Washington Gibbs, on 9 Feb 1854, Hyde Co., North Carolina; died Hyde Co., North Carolina.

Pegram, born in 1825, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Nancy Harriett, about 1848, Hyde Co., North Carolina; married Catherine Jarvis, on 9 Jun 1856, Hyde Co., North Carolina; married Perline Sawyer, on 30 Jul 1876, Hyde Co., North Carolina; died in 1883, Hyde Co., North Carolina.

+82                    iii.    James Alexander Pegram, born in 1825, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Sarah Jane (Sally) Fletcher, on 23 Sep 1854, Hyde Co., North Carolina; died in 1884, Hyde Co., North Carolina.

83                    iv.    Samuel Pegram was born in 1832 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He apparently died single without issue.

+84                     v.    Amanda Pegram, born in Aug 1834, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Little John Pugh Migette (Midyette), before 1857, Hyde Co., North Carolina; died on 23 Dec 1908, Hyde Co., North Carolina.

85                    vi.    Henry Pegram was born in 1836 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He apparently died single without issue.

He probably died between 1850 and 1860 since we have not found him or any identifiable descendants subsequent to th 1850 Census.

86                   vii.    Richard Pegram was born in 1841 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He probably died between 1850 and 1860 since we have not found him or any identifiable descendants subsequent to th 1850 Census.

+87                  viii.    Mary J. Pegram, born in 1844, Warren Co., North Carolina; married William B. Smith, Hyde Co., North Carolina; married Tully Moss, Hyde Co., North Carolina; died about 1890, Hyde Co., North Carolina.

23.  John Pegram (George-2, Daniel-1) was born on 12 Feb 1771 in Bute Co., North Carolina.  He died on 3 Apr 1836 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.  We have long known of a family Bible kept by the family of George Pegram and Wilcia (Willie) Harrison Pegram but have now been fortunate enough to hear from a descendant of George Pegram who has a copy of the information from this Bible.  It is the only extant record that we are aware of that contains information on the actual birth dates of members of the family of John Pegram and Parthenia Bell. Unless otherwise noted, the birth dates of the children of John Pegram and Parthenia Bell are taken from this Bible record sent to us  by James Pegram of Columbus, Ohio whose own records are taken from Bible records kept by his family.

John Pegram and Parthenia (aka Parthena & Patty) Bell were married about 1790.  Parthenia (aka Parthena & Patty) Bell (daughter of Jesse Bell and Shearin) was born on 14 May 1770 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died on 2 May 1851 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.  John Pegram and Parthenia (aka Parthena & Patty) Bell had the following children:

+88                      i.    Cynthia Pegram, born on 11 Oct 1790, Warren Co., North Carolina; died about 1834, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+89                     ii.    John Pegram, born on 1 Feb 1792, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Rebecca Dwiggins, on 17 Feb 1824, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died on 4 Jul 1848, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+90                    iii.    Jesse Pegram, born on 23 Aug 1794, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Martha Dwiggins, on 1 Apr 1826, Stokes Co., North Carolina; married Lucretia Fuller, on 9 Jun 1829, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 2 Apr 1867, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+91                    iv.    Baker Pegram, born on 22 Dec 1795, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Mary (Polly) Dwiggins, on 28 Nov 1822, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died on 7 Dec 1875, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+92                     v.    William Pegram, born on 25 Apr 1799; married Elizabeth Dwiggins, on 20 Dec 1823, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 18 Jun 1836, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+93                    vi.    Jacob Pegram, born on 25 May 1799, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Ursula Dwiggins, on 31 Dec 1822, Stokes Co., North Carolina; died on 21 Apr 1851, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+94                   vii.    George Pegram, born on 17 Aug 1806, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married Wilicia (Willie) Harrison, on 1 Sep 1827, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died in 1870, West Virginia.

+95                  viii.    Daniel Pegram, born in 1807, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married Mary Ann McMichael, on 28 Aug 1830, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 8 Sep 1858, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

+96                    ix.    Elijah Pegram, born on 22 Dec 1812, Guilford Co., North Carolina; married Nancy McMichael, about 1835, Guilford Co., North Carolina; died on 8 Jul 1848, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

24.  William Pegram (George-2, Daniel-1)  was born about 1778 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died about 1876 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Shirley Cahoon has provided us with a copy of the administration of the Estate of William Pegram. In May Court of 1877 in Warren Co., North Carolina we have the following:

William G. Egerton, Administrator of William Pegram, Dec. states that upon the death of William Pegram his Estate descended "to his children Allen Pegram, Emily Pegram, Martha Harris, N.P. Harris and Brack, widow of George Brack, all of whom are of full age and residents of said Co., of Warren."  We can not explain why the grand-children of deceased parents are not included as devisees.

N. P. Harris is Nancy P. who married Newsom Harris.

We are still unsure about  the spouse of Martha (Patsy) Harris but if she was still unmarried at age 42, she probably left no children. The 1850 Census shows:

William Pegram    - 72
Nancy Pegram     - 63
Martha Pegram    - 42
Emeline Pegram   - 23
Elizabeth Pegram - 21
Priestly Harris       - 15

The 1860 Census for Warren Co., p. 580, shows:

W. Pegram - 85
N. Pegram  - 85
E. Pegram  - 30

The leaves us with 2 possibilities.  Either Martha married between 1850 and 1860 or she is listed wrong on the 1850 Census.

If the 1850 ceneus is correct, then Martha (Patsy) is still single and living at home.  We have found no marriage bond in Warren Co. for a Martha or Patsy Pegram to a Harris after the 1850 census that we can identify as this Martha although she is identified as Martha Harriss in her father's probate records and shown as Patsy Harriss on the 1880 Census.

We have not yet identified William on the 1870 Census.  We know he was still alive but we can not find him on the 1870 Census of Warren Co.

Note that we have also listed Mildred as a daughter of William. Mildred has previously been shown as a daughter of Henry Pegram. However, based on the 1810 and 1820 Census records of Warren Co., Henry only had 2 daughters.  Also, we have been furnished with a report prepared for Robert Boykin which shows Mildred to be a daughter of William.  There is no question that the Priestly (Presley) Harris shown living with William and Nancy on the 1850 Census is a son of Mildred and William F. Harris.  The younger children of William F. Harris and Mildred Pegram Harris are found living with their father and his new wife in 1850 but Presley is living with his grandfather.

William Pegram and Nancy Riggan were married on 28 Jan 1808 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Nancy Riggan (daughter of Jacob Riggan and Elizabeth Carter) was born in 1787 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  William Pegram and Nancy Riggan had the following children:

+97                      i.    Martha (Patsy) Pegram, born in 1808, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Harris, after 1850.

+98                     ii.    Mildred Pegram, married William F. Harris, on 5 Aug 1831, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before 1850, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+99                    iii.    Allen Pegram, born in 1818, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Mary Shearin, on 9 Sep 1839, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+100                    iv.    Nancy P. Pegram, born in 1827, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Newsom Harriss, on 13 Dec 1843, Warren Co., North Carolina.

101                     v.    Emeline (Emily) Pegram was born in 1827 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

+102                    vi.    Elizabeth Pegram, born in Jan 1829, Warren Co., North Carolina; married George W. Brack, on 25 Mar 1856, Warren Co., North Carolina.

25.  George Pegram (George-2, Daniel-1)  was born about 1780 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1832 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  According to George Pegram, his grandfather owned the first cotten gin in Warren Co.  He said it was a small operation but "sure beat picking out cotton seed with the fingers." He said he remembered seeing it as a child still standing under a shed.

George Pegram and Clarissa Lancaster were married on 14 Dec 1803 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Clarissa Lancaster (daughter of Moses Lancaster and Martha Harris) was born about 1787 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died in 1848 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  George Pegram and Clarissa Lancaster had the following children:

+103                      i.    Thomas W. Pegram, born about 1805, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Martha Ann Vaughan, on 14 Jun 1827, Warren Co., North Carolina; died in 1847, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+104                     ii.    Elizabeth Pegram, born about 1810, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Thomas W. Rooker, on 19 Jul 1832, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before 1845, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+105                    iii.    Baker M. Pegram, born about 1815, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Eliza B. Andrews, on 21 Mar 1836, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+106                    iv.    George Harris Pegram, born in 1816, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Ann Mary Laughter, on 14 Feb 1838, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before 1860, Warren Co., North Carolina.

107                     v.    James John Pegram was born about 1819 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died before 1855 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

+108                    vi.    Ann F. Pegram, born in 1825, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Harvey (Harry) M. Bobbitt, on 9 Mar 1842, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+109                   vii.    Eliza J.(Ellen) Pegram, born about 1830, Warren Co., North Carolina; married William Plummer Stallings, on 26 Jan 1847.

26.  Thomas Pegram (George-2, Daniel-1)  was born about 1782 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Thomas Pegram and Elizabeth (Betsy) Riggan were married on 8 May 1811 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Elizabeth (Betsy) Riggan (daughter of Jacob Riggan and Elizabeth Carter) was born.  Her paternal grand-parents were John Riggan and Ann Bell, the daughter of Thomas Bell and Mary Thompson.  Thomas Pegram and Elizabeth (Betsy) Riggan had the following children:

+110                      i.    John L. Pegram, born about 1812, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Martha Jane Robertson, on 19 Dec 1854, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+111                     ii.    Nancy Pegram, born about 1813, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Presley Rooker, on 8 Jul 1831, Warren Co., North Carolina; died before 1850.

27.  Nancy Pegram (George-2, Daniel-1) was born about 1784.  She died before 1850 in Robertson Co., Tennessee.  From the Will of George Pegram, Sr. we know that he had one grandson named Micager Bell. Based  on Deed dated 24 Feb 1857 wherein John W. Riggan, Agt. for Geo. W. Bell,, Rebecca Bell  & Caroline Bell  to John L. Pegram for $23 conveyed their undivided right in the Estate of George's daughters, in 126 acre tract.  It is now confirmed that these are children of Nancy Bell and her husband Jacob Bell.

At the same time we find the following: 24 Feb 1857 - John W. Riggan as Agt. for James Moore & Cynthia Moore  (his wife) of Chatham Co., TN to John L. Pegram for $7.80 - right & title to 126 acre tract (description as above). Wit. Thom. A. Montgomery, Nathl. Nicholson ( jurat). Proved Feb 1857. Reg. 20 Mar 1857 (DB:31:653). Cynthia Bell married James Moore and she is identified as the daughter of Nancy Bell and Jacob Bell in her father's Will.

Nancy Pegram and Jacob Bell were married on 24 Dec 1800 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Jacob Bell (son of Jesse Bell and Shearin) was born in 1773 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in 1854 in Cheatham Co., Tennessee.  The 1850 Census of Robertson Co., Tennessee shows Jacob Bell, age 77; Rebecca, age 40; Caroline, age 38; Parthenia, age 37; George, age 29. All were born in North Carolina.  The part of Robertson Co. where Jacob lived later was incorporated into Cheatham Co. where he later died.

The Will of Jacob Bell dated July 20, 1854 and probated in Cheatham County, Tennessee reads as follows:

Jacob Bell married Nancy Pegram, daughter of George Pegram, Sr. of Warren County, North Carolina.  Based on this Will, it appears that his son Micajah has predeceased his father.  It is obvious his wife Nancy is now deceased which is confirmed by the 1850 Census.

Since she is not named in his Will, it would appear that Parthena may have died between 1850 and 1854.  Nancy Pegram and Jacob Bell had the following children:

+112                      i.    Elizabeth Bell, born in 1802, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Miles W. Evans, on 31 Jan 1839, Warren Co., North Carolina.

+113                     ii.    Cynthia Bell, born in 1806, Warren Co., North Carolina; married James C. Moore, on 7 Jan 1828, Warren Co., North Carolina; died after 1880, Cheatham Co., Tennessee.

114                    iii.    Rebecca Bell was born about 1810 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

115                    iv.    Caroline Bell was born about 1812 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

116                     v.    Parthenia Bell was born in 1813.

117                    vi.    George W. Bell was born about 1821 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  In 1860 George is found living with his 2 spinster sister, Rebecca and Caroline, at the homeplace in Cheatham, Tennessee. In 1870 they are still together, living next door to their sister, Cynthia Moore..

118                   vii.    Micajah Bell was born before 1825 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  We have found no descendants of Micajah Bell but did find a Micajah on one TN. census record.  However, Thomas Brewer has the remnants of an old Bible that is badly torn and mostly illegible but he has sent the following note:

"What I can make out in the Bible are the names: Charles Bell and ___ Colclough who were married April 11, 18__. Then the name Pegram, and there is a date below it, February 4th, __ _ _. Do you have a marriage date for Parthenia Bell and John Pegram. Hopefully it is February 4 th. Macijah Bell married ____ Lee. Issac Nee___. Luke Senter. Patrick Barr. ___..mas Bell (Thomas) departed this life on Sunday __ day of February and looks like was 43 yrs. old. Jesse Bell, has October under his name. Nancy ___ has October under her name. Elizabeth, the name Bedsoe, may have been a marriage. Benjamin Colclough."

He was named in the Will of his grandfather, George Pegram, who died in Warren Co., North Carolina in 1825.

31.  Elizabeth Pegram (Gideon-2, Daniel-1)  was born in 1785 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  She died after 1870.  Although the sons of Peyton Vaughan and his wife Elizabeth Vaughn apparently left home, they also returned.  It is possible that when the following deed was executed, they were simply away at school.

By Deed dated  April 12, 1841,  William  T. Vaughan  of Petersburg, Virginia; John J. Vaughan of Wake Co., NC and James  M. Vaughan of Warren Co., NC, "all tenants in common of a piece of land left to them by their grandfather, Gideon Pegram"  conveyed  same to Thomas W. Pegram  for $120 each. (DB28:284)  Thomas W. Pegram was the husband of their sister, Martha Vaughan.

On the 1850 census of Warren Co., North Carolina, William Vaughan, age 34, and James Vaughan, age 32, both  living at home with their parents.

Elizabeth Pegram and Peyton Vaughan were married on 20 Apr 1809 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  Peyton Vaughan was born in 1782 in Virginia.  He died after 1870.  In 1870, Peyton and Elizabeth are found living next to the families of their 2 sons, John J. and James M.

The 1850 Census of Warren Co. shows his occupation to be a school teacher.  Elizabeth Pegram and Peyton Vaughan had the following children:

+119                      i.    Martha Ann Vaughan, born in 1810, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Thomas W. Pegram, on 14 Jun 1827, Warren Co., North Carolina; died after 1880, Warren Co., North Carolina.

121                    iii.    William Thomas Vaughan was born in 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  He died in May 1867 in Warren Co., North Carolina.  William Thomas Vaughan apparently never married. His Will probated May, 1867 in Warren Co., North Carolina leaves to "my father and mother Peyton Vaughan and Elizabeth Vaughan, the tract of land where they now live"; to "my brother James M. Vaughan" lend all the land east of the new line I have just made for his lifetime with reversion to his children, but reserving the lifetime right of my parents.  To his brother John J. Vaughan he left "choice of the two tracts just now made, for his lifetime with reversion to his son, James M. Vaughan" and his "stock". He left another tract to his sister Marthy Ann Pegram.

+122                    iv.    James Madison Vaughan, born on 7 Nov 1817, Warren Co., North Carolina; married Mourning Boddie Hilliard, on 14 Nov 1860, Nash Co., North Carolina; died on 4 Nov 1886, Nash Co., North Carolina.

There were the Walkers, Harrises, Shearins, Williams, Bells  and others.

Note from Jim Long, a great researcher in Tennessee who is descended  from Cynthia (Bell) Gupton, daughter of Thomas (4) and Judith (Shearon) Bell, includes the following:

Thomas (3) and Martha (Pegram) Bell had at least 1 child, a son named (of  course) Thomas (4), who lived from October 10, 1788 to January 13, 1867.   They moved to Montgomery County about 1812. His was the only known tombstone at the Thomas Bell Cemetery in the Cheap Hill community of Cheatham County.  The cemetery was destroyed by a bulldozer in the late 1960s, and the tombstone was lost.  An extant photograph of the stone  showed the dates quoted for him above.
