d125     NANCY LONG SLEDGE; b. May 20, 1813; d. 1853.

7122

Nancy was born in Hancock County, Georgia.  She was named for her maternal grandmother, Nancy Long Harris.  Nancy moved with her family to Twiggs County, Georgia about 1818.

Nancy married Amos Harris about 1830 and Twiggs County, Georgia.  Amos was born about 18 and nine and Georgia.  Some descendents of Nancy and Amos believe that Amos may have been the son of Benjamin (born about 1782 in North Carolina) Harris and Elizabeth (born about 1785 in North Carolina) Harris of Twiggs County, Georgia.  It further seems likely that Amos was a descendent of Edward Harris (d121) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia.  The given names and other relationships of this family make this assumption likely.

Nancy and Amos were living in Twiggs County in 1840.  They moved to Louisiana by 1846.  They were living, in 1850, as neighbors of Nancy's brother, Milton D. Sledge.  This was near Coushatta in Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

Nancy died in Louisiana about 1853 according to the memory of her daughter, Winifred.  Winifred said that her mother died when she was two years of age.  Winifred also remembered her Louisiana home to be a log house with plank floors

Amos joined other relatives and moved his family to south Texas about 1854.  The move was made in covered wagons.

Amos established his home a few miles south of the Medina River in Bexar County, Texas.  This area is south of San Antonio.

Amos died about 1870.  Descendents of Amos and Nancy believe that he is buried in the cemetery of Oak Island Methodist Church.  This church is located south of San Antonio on Texas Highway 1604.  More precisely, the church is on the south side of Highway 1604 between Texas Highway 16 and US Highway 281.

Much of the information included herein is from the research and notes of Lee Orr Harris (d125/7122/933).  The information was provided by Lee his brother, John W. Harris, Jr., of Pearsall, Texas.

Children of Nancy Sledge and Amos Harris:

Allen was born in Twiggs County, Georgia.  His family moved to Louisiana by 1846.  Allen, in 1860, was living with his sister, Martha Harris Applewhite, and her family on the San Miguel Creek in Atascosa County, Texas.

Allen joined Captain Bob Williams’ company of the Texas Rangers and became a Confederate soldier in the War Between the States.

Allen married Elizabeth Little Knox on September 17, 1867.  Elizabeth, the daughter of Caroline Bradley and George Knox, was born on November 28, 1845 in Bosier Parish, Louisiana.  Elizabeth became an orphan when she was three years of age.  According to Winifred Harris, the daughter of Amos and Nancy Sledge Harris, Elizabeth had traveled from Louisiana to south Texas in that wagon caravan in 1854.  As an eight year old child, she traveled with her older sister, Mrs. Jesse Applewhite.  Also, according to Winifred, Elizabeth, while riding in a wagon, discovered a bottle of whiskey which someone had hidden.

After sampling the contents of the bottle a few times, Elizabeth began to take a rosy view of things.  She hailed the passing travelers loudly, so loudly in fact that older people in the caravan investigated and discovered the cause of the behavior.  They appropriated the bottle.  Elizabeth and Allen told the census taken in 1900 that they had been married for 34 years.  Also, they said that they had given birth to four children, three of which survived.

Allen and Elizabeth lived in Zavala County, Texas, southwest of San Antonio.  They operated a cattle ranch and maintained bee hives.

d125     HIXSEY HARRIS; b. (c) 1802; d. after February 1, 1894.

714

Hixsey was born in Greene County, Georgia. She moved, with her family, to Hancock tY. Georgia in 1808.

Hixsey married John H. Akins on December 21, 1824 in Hancock County, Georgia.

John was born January 15, 1801 in Greene County, Georgia. He died on October 20, 1882 in Spalding County, Georgia.

John was the son of James and Nancy Ivey Akins. John's parents were married on March 17, 1800 in Greene County, Georgia.

Hixsey received her share of her father's estate on January 22, 1825 in the sum of $425.98.

The Nelson Harris estate, on February 9, 1826 "paid J. Akins the sum of twelve dollars for boarding Alston Harris (younger brother of Hixsey) for schooling."

John Akins, also, on February 9, 1826, sold 145 acres of land on the waters of Shoulderbone Creek in Greene County to John Ivey for $560.

John and Hixsey were, apparently, living in Pike County, Georgia in 1830.

John H. Akins purchased the land where he and Hixsey made their home in present day Spalding County, Georgia while it was a part of Pike County, Georgia as follows: 101.25 acres of land, located in District 3, Land Lot 105, was purchased from John Harper on January 1, 1844; 202.5 acres of land, located in District 3, Land Lot 120,, was purchased from Josiah Tattnall on February 10, 1848.

The family of John H. Akins was listed in the 1850 census of Pike County, Georgia. Also, this family was listed in the Spalding County census in 1860, 1870 and 1880.

The area of their home, referred to as the community of Liberty Hill, was changed: from Pike County to Spalding County on December 20, 1851 when Spalding County bra, created from Pike, Henry and Fayette Counties.

Judge John H. Akins served as a member of the Pike County Inferior Court (County Commissioners). He also represented Spalding County in the Georgia Legislature.

The Akins home was located in the southeastern corner of Spalding County.

After the death of Judge Akins, Hixsey continued to live at their family homeplace.

Responding to the action of her son, Elisha C. Akins, in probating the will of her late husband, Hixsey filed a caveat with the court asking that the estate not be divided during her lifetime.

Almost twelve years later, during the February, 1894 term of the Court of Ordinary a Spalding County, motion was granted to divide the estate.

The court, perhaps, was persuaded to permit the Executor to proceed with dividing the estate based upon an agreement, dated January 4, 1894, and signed by the children VI heirs of John H. Akins.

That agreement stated that Hixsey Akins was living in the home of her son, E. C. Akins, and that he was taking personal care of her and was providing for her needs. Further, based upon the commitment of this son to continue to do so for the rest of his mother's life, the other heirs agreed that such needs and care should be funded from the rentals of the estate.

Each child of John H. Akins received the sum of $162.34 as their share of their father's estate on December 15, 1896. The children of deceased children divided the ism sum.

According to some reports, Hixsey lived to be 94 years of age.

Drury was born in Greene County, Georgia. He was named for his materna grandfather, Drury Long. He moved with his parents to the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County, Georgia in 1808.

The name Drury also came from Harris family relatives in England. The name la widely used as a given name by the Harris family and by other related families in the Virginia colony.

The name was correctly spelled in the will of Nelson Harris, Drury's father. This name has also been spelled as Drewry in other public records.

Drury participated in the Georgia state land lotteries of 1820-21 and, by OIL method, he aquired 250 acres of land in Early County, Georgia.

Drury acquired his share of his father's estate on January 22, 1825. Perhaps this date was his 21st birthday.

Drury married Eleanor Barksdale on May 17, 1827 in Hancock County, Georgia. He squired land in Fayette County, Georgia on December 15, 1827. Drury, his wife, and A daughter were shown, by the census of 1830, to be living in Monroe County, Georgia. Drury's younger brother, Alston Green Harris, was also living in this same county That year. Dury, on September 30, 1839, sold land in Fayette County, Georgia to the husband of his first cousin, Eliza Harris Allen. This was Elijah P. Allen. The deed to Elijah Allen stated that Drury was, at that time, a resident of Carroll County, Georgia. miry conveyed land in Campbell County, Georgia to Ezekael Polk on December 29, 1849. )is deed described. Drury as being a citizen of Carroll County, Georgia. Campbell County had been formed from a part of Carroll County in 1828.

The writer, at this time, has found no further records of Drury.

716

Alston was born in Greene County, Georgia and moved with his family, in 1808, a few miles to the south to live in the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County.

The name Alston, also widely used by others in this Harris family, was for a family in Warren County, North Carolina. Some of this family also migrated to Hancock County, Georgia and several years later to Atlanta.

The name Green came from Alston's maternal great-grandparents.

After the death of Nelson Harris in 1820 and with the creation of new counties to the west, from Indian lands, members of this family began moving in that direction to live in those new counties.

The counties of Fayette, Henry and Monroe were all created on the same day, May 15, 1821.

Parts of Monroe County were later used tosamete the counties of Pike, Upson and Lamar. From Fayette and Henry Counties would come Clayton, DeKalb and Fulton counties.

Meriwether County was created from Troup County on December 14, 1827.

Alston, as a young man, moved west to the newly created Monroe County.

Alston married Ann Williams Gray on December 6, 1827 in Monroe 'County, Georgia.

After living in Monroe County for three years or so, Alston and Ann moved into the, newly created Meriwether County, Georgia. They were, therefore, among the very first settlers in that new county.

Meriwether County was the birthplace of all of their children with the exception Of the first two, Joseph and James, who were born in Monroe County.

Alston and Ann made their home in Meriwether County until about 1852-54. At such time, they moved to Henry County, Georgia.
