SUTTON

  • Thomas Sutton, was a subject in the Colony at Jamestown, May 23, 1609. (Browns Genesis to America) Robert Sutton came to America, 1635, age 17 years. (Hotten.)
  • Nathaniel Sutton, (first in Perq Co) m in Nansemond Co Va, before coming to N. C. Deborah Astine, “by Mr. Babb, minister of gospel” Aug 12, 1668. They became Quakers soon after, arriving in Perq, as we find their names on all the Quaker records.

  • Sutton, Nathaniel (1), died Dec 29, 1682. (His will Grimes, p Mar 12, 1682.) He left to son George, “plan’ where I now live,” to Joseph plan’, son Nathaniel 150a of land, d Rebeckah, cousin John Godby (Gosby). Wife not named, but she survived him, & m 2d John Whedby, May 10, 1685, who died leaving her a widow, when she m for her 3d husband, Dennis Macclenden.

This Wood family lived in, & around Woodville, & it is thought the place derived its name from this line of Woods. Another line of Woods, came to the county much later than this date, & made their home near Hertford. Edward & John Wood family who came to N. C. from Norfolk Co Va.

SNODEN

  • Nothing is known of Thomas Snoden prior to his entry into N. C., except an affidavit made by John Foster 1703, that “he knew Thomas Snoden, & Elizabeth his wife in Pennsylvania, where he died, and that his son Thomas came from Maryland to Perq, with his step-father Thomas Hassold.” Thomas Snoden according to his own statement, was 24 years old Mar 1703. How long he had been here at that time the records do not show, but he was serving as Clerk of Court 1704. He married in Perq, July 18, 1705 Thomazin Mercer, who appears to have been his 2d wife.
  • Snoden (Snowden) Thomas and wife Constance — issue: 1 Joseph, b Dec 7, 1703. This is the only son by his first wife. His other children being by the second wife Tonsen: 2 Rebeckah, b Nov 23, 1706—3 John, b July 29, 1707—4 Thomas (3), April 18, 1711—5 Willis, b Dec 24, 1713—6 Joseph (2d by name), b Jan 24, 1716/7—7 Samuel, b Feby 6, 1720/1—8 Solomon, b Aug 26, 1724—9 Lemuel, b Feby 26, 1726/7. With all these sons, the name of Snoden could hardly suffer for lack of perpetuation.
  • Snoden, Thomas (2) will p in Perq, Oct 1736. He bequeathed to son John “land in Bertie Co,” and to son Joseph same. To sons: William, George & Samuel “land in Perq Co,” sons: Solomon, & Lemuel.
  • The division of his Estate Dec 1736, by Richard Whedbee, shows heirs: William, Joseph, George, Samuel, Solomon, & Lemuel, to each a part; wife Elizabeth. She is named in the will of John Wilson Aug 6, 1760, as “daughter.” From the records it seems that Thomas Snoden had by his third & last wife one daughter, whose name is not mentioned, therefore one can not be certain of the fact. She was widow of Francis Layden whose will was made in Perq, Feb 23, 1727/8, and he names the identical children in his will that she does in hers.
  • Snoden, Elizabeth, will Perq p Jan 1744, Sons: William, Francis, George, & Isack Layden, gr-dau Elizabeth Layden, gr-sons Robert, & Joseph Warren. Francis Layden possessed 337a of land in Durants Neck 1794, and Mary his wife 100a.
  • Snoden, Solomon (1) Thomas (1) m Mary Hawkins widow of John (no date). Richard Whedbee petitioned the Court (date not given) “having married Relict of Solomon Snowden” for care of his son Zebulon Snowden, and a division of negroes left by deceased.

  • Agnes De Leigh dau of Richard De Leigh, great gr-son of Hamon, Lord of High Leigh, temp Henry II. Agnes Leigh m 3 times, her 3d husband being Sir William Venerables, Knt (2d son of William Baron of Kinderton) and had issue: John who took the name of Leigh before the reign of Edward 1st. He m twice, and had by 2d wife, Ellen (d of Thomas De Corona of Adlington) sons: Robert, who became the progenitor of the Leighs of Adlington; Sir William the ancestor of the Leighs of Eisall; Peter founder of Leighs of Becton, 4th: Gilbert De Leigh, who had son: John of Chester, m Cecelia De Townley, ancestor of Lord Leigh, & Gilbert De Leigh (16 Edward 3d) m Alice, dau of Robert Vernon. His son John, m Clara Fenton (d of Thomas) issue: Gilbert De Leigh, of Middleton 1466, issue: Gilbert De Leigh, who m Margaret, 6th child of Walter, & Elizabeth (Mackingfield) Calverly, of Ewel Castle, Surry, England, issue: Francis Leigh of London, who m Alice Lightfoot, had issue: Sir Francis Leigh, Director of the London company, issue: Lawrence of Virginia, who had Col William Leigh of Virginia, who had William Leigh of West Point, King William Co Va, who had Gilbert Leigh of King William, & Westmoreland Co Va, and Perquimans Co, N. C.
  • In 1608 Henry Dawkes, & his brother-in-law William Leigh both of London, took a bill of adventure from London Company, & settled at Varina in 1632, which was for a long period the county seat of Henrico Co. A son of William Leigh was “Capt Leigh of London,” & York Co Va, who died in York Co, 1684/5. He was at the time of his death Admr of the Estate of Phillip Lightfoot, thought to be either his bro-in-law, or uncle-in-law. Elizabeth Lightfoot (wife of John of London) in a will p in London, Dec 24, 1686, names James Leigh as “Son-in-law.” It is thought that George, Edward, Capt Francis, & William, were all sons of William Leigh, the emigrant to Virginia. Francis Leigh was a member of the Col Council in Va, 1680.
  • John Leigh was transported to Va, by Thos Knight, Lower Norfolk Co, Apl 23, 1647.
  • James Leigh was living on Riverside, & Tanners Creek, Princess Anne Co Va, prior to 1670. This may be the James named in will of Elizabeth Lightfoot of London, as “son-in-law.”
  • Gilbert Leigh of King William, & Westmoreland Co Va. moved to N. C. where he m in Perquimans Co, Elizabeth Foster. Gilbert Leigh was a contractor, & builder, and it is claimed he erected the present Court house in Edenton. He was living in Chowan Co 1765, where he took the contract for many public buildings, and for his enterprises accumulated quite a fortune. In 1774 he purchased lands in Durants Neck, Perquimans Co, where he resided until his death. His will in Perq Co, Nov 27, 1791, names wife Elizabeth, dau Mary Whedbee, sons: Francis, Richard, Thomas, James, & Benjamin. Test’ Benj Bedgood, Nicholas Wressell, Sam’l Knight.
  • Thomas Leigh, & family were residents of Chowan Co, Apl 1711.
  • Richard Leigh, (s of Gilbert) m Charlotte Spruell, issue: Richard (2) who m & had L. B. Leigh of Little Rock, Ark.
  • James Leigh (s of Gilbert, of Durants Neck, m 1st — Layden, and 2d Mary Barclift, issue: 1 James, m 1st Mary Granbery, 2d — Gray—2 Lavinia, m — Riddick—3 Martha, m Richard Blount, & had Richard Blount (?), m Rebecca Whedbee, and Martha, m Seth Whedbee—3 Edward youngest child who m 1st Margaret Jacocks, by whom one daughter Susan Jacocks, m Samuel Harrell of Norfolk Va, issue one daughter Margaret, m 1st — Feribee, m 2d Sager. By Mr. Ferebee three sons. Edward Leigh had by 2d wife, Grizzell Jacocks (sister of first wife) 1 Edward, m Mary Coke (d of Dr Coke of Edenton) 2 Grizzell (unmarried), 3 John, married living north—4 Martha (Mattie) m C. C. Winslow, four children—Maud, m John Dobson of Huntington West Va, three children.
  • James Leigh (2) James (1) by wife had one son Richard, who died unmarried. By 2d wife Miss Gray one daughter Mary who m Mr. Charles Robinson of Elizabeth City N. C. and had several children, all living.
  • Martha (Mattie) and husband C. C. Winslow, had issue, 1 E. Leigh Winslow, M Maureen McManus of New Orleans, issue two sons. Ellen Terry, m Clyde McCallum, no issue. Emmett Julian, m Mary Clark, issue one daughter. Caleb Cook Winslow unmarried.

  • Jonathan Bateman, was granted 400a, in Perq, “on West side of Perq River, in the pocoson, by ye side of Robert Wilsons Creek.” 1684.
  • John Bateman, 250a, on ye North side of Perq River, & West side of Lillys Creek. He had another grt, 145a on North East side of Perq River, adj Atterways Eastermost bounds. Mar 30, 1704.
  • Bateman, Jonathan, m Margaret — issue: 1 Jonathan (2) b Feb 12, 1676—2 John b Nov 2, 1678—3 Thomas b Sept 13, 1688—4 Mary b May 16, 16—.
  • Bateman, Margaret, wife of Jonathan, died Sept 15, 1688.

  • Bateman, Mary, the last child of Jonathan, must have been her child, as she was born after the death of Margaret, his first wife.

  • A petition was presented to the Court, April 9, 1702, by Jonathan Bateman (2), to “lett Mr Wm Wilkinson, have a pattent for 400a, Surveyed for Mr Sam Swann, in Lillies Creek” he having sold same to sd Wilkinson. This land was later called “Stevensons Point.”

  • Bartlett, William, will Albemarle Co, p July 1698. Eldest son: William, (to whom he left a plan’ adj William Arnold) s Thomas, (to whom he left land, adj Thomas Godfrey), Exrs Elizabeth & William Bartlett. Clerk of Court, William Glover. (This was father, of above said William, who m Ann Durant.)

  • Eliza Sanderson, d of John Barclift, m 2d — Trumball ( of William) before Feb 4, 1774. John Barclift, in his will bequeathed to his wife, his “brick house.” As there is only one very old “brick house” in Perq, the one on the road to Harveys Neck, this may probably be the same one here mentioned. No one seems to know when this house was erected.

  • Frances Foster (wife of Francis) made her will in Perq, p Jan 27, 1763, naming son William, dau’s Elizabeth Barclift, & Frances Hall, gr-dau Elizabeth Foster. (Elizabeth Foster, d of William, & Ann was b Jany 16, 1741/2.)
  • Frederick Foster (relationship uncertain) will p in Perq, April 23, 1784, names: Brother Francis Foster’s children, and children of Gilbert Leigh, Joseph Bateman, children of brother John Foster, sister Sarah Night, brother Ellsberry Foster, sister Winnifred Foster, Francis Pits, Demsey Newby’s widow, Mary Bateman’s children, Mary Maudlin, widow Stevenson.
  • John Foster was granted land in Chowan Co (200a) on Yawpim River. Sept 15, 1694.
  • Francis Foster was granted land 160a in “perquimans precinct,” on Suttons Creek, Nov 11, 1719.
  • William Foster died Oct 10, 1687. His wife Diana m 3d Thomas White (Her 1 husband was Thomas Harris.)
  • Ann Foster, wife of John, died Oct 30, 1692.
  • Elizabeth Foster was drowned April 25, 1688.

To dau Elizabeth Barclift, “A Negro wench, and a negro woman.” Son William Ex. Test’ James Gibson, Abraham Riggs, Richard Whidbee. Probated Apl 1761.

ARNOLD

  • Wm Arnold of Dorset Co England, was bapt June 24, 1587. He “sett sayle from Dartmouth, in Old England, the first of May, & arrived in New England, June 24, 1635.” Settled at Hingham, Mass, & became one of the original proprietors of Providence April 1636. He moved to Newport, R. I., 1651, & held many offices in that State. Married Christian Peak. Benedict Arnold was one of his descendants. (Ancestral Records, & Portraits.)
  • John Arnold had a grt for land in Perq precinct, Jan 1, 1694, 150a on Little River, adj William Barclift.
  • John Arnold of Conn, New Eng, made a deed in Norfolk Co Va, Aug 21, 1723, sold 300a “which was given by Richard Bowler dec’d, unto his son Richard, he now being likewise dec, Mary Arnold, mother of sd John, heir-at-law.” Land on Western Branch.
  • Thomas Arnold, came to Vir on Ship Culpepper, as Carpenter. In Surry Co Va he apt Mr Robert Perry Merch’t Att’ to “recover from James Barnett, & Jno. Nichols Ex of Ann Arnold, a plan’ formerly belonging to his brother Edward Arnold, of Chickahominy” James City Co Vir, “who did in his will Aug 14, 1679, leave said plan’ to her for life, & at her death to next heirs.” Mar 17, 1682/3.   • One Lawrence Arnold, was dead in Perq before Sept 19, 1694, when his widow, m 2d Jonathan Bateman of Perq Co. He made his will Dec 14, 1691. p Feb 2, 1691 (Old Calendar) naming only one son John, & Lawrence Godfrey. His wife is not named.
  • John Arnold of Perq, will p July 14, 1724, names sons; John, Lawrence, William & Joseph, d Elizabeth, wife Mary.
  • John Arnold of Perq, will p July 21, 1735, names son John, & wife Elizabeth, to whom he left “land on Deep Creek.” Ex Samuel Parsons.
  • Joseph Arnold of Perq, d. s. p. will p April Court 1752, dau Mary Ex. Brothers William, & Lawrence. (No other Legatees.)
  • Edward Arnold made his will in Chowan Co, probated April Court 1752. Son & Ex Edward, d Hannah Stallings, wife Pleasant.
  • Both Edward Arnold, & John of Perq (1735) have a Crest on their Seals.
  • Benjamin Arnell m Sarah (d of Jeremiah Cannon) who made his will in Chowan Co, 3, 3mo 1779. She m 2d before Oct Court 1745, Samuel Parsons. Sarah Arnell, is named in the will of sd Samuel, July Court 1745, as dau (step-dau).
  • The division of Estate of Edward Arnell, Chowan Co, 1777, gives heirs; Sons Wm, John, Edward, & Richard Arnell, dau’s Elizabeth Norfleet, Pleasant Knight, Bathsheba, & Esther Arnell.
  • William Arnold of Perq, m Miriam Newby, (d of Mark). His will p in Perq, Aug Court 1794, names father William, & sons William, & Jonathan, d Mary.
  • John Arnold, & Thos Holloway, had a joint grt in Perq, April 30, 1703, being “land indented to Priscilla Clay, who died seized of sd land,” 18 Xmo 1701.
  • Mary wife of John Arnold, m 2d Daniel Hall, she appears on Tithe List of Perq, 1740, with “son Lawrence Arnold.”

IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. I, John Hecklefeild, of the Precinct of Pequimmons, in the County of Albemarle, in the Province of North Carolina, Gent., being sick & weak of Body, but of sound mind & memory (Blessed be God for the Same) & Knowing ye Certainty of Death, to hereby make, Ordain, Constitute & Appoint this to be my last Will & Testament, hereby revoking & making void all former Wills by me made, & this only to stand & be of force in Law. First & principally I recommend my Soul to God that gave it, hoping and Assuredly trusting in & thro’ the Meritts of my Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, to obtain full & free pardon of all my Sins; My Body I committ to the Ground to be decently interr’d at the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned, according to the manner I buried my last Wife. As for w’t worldly Goods it hath pleas’d God to bestow on me in this Life, I give, devise & bequeath the Same in manner & forme following:

Imprim. I give to the Hon’ble Charles Eden, Esqr., Governor, my Mourning Ring w’th a Death’s Head & y’e Christall

Item. I give to Mr. Edm’d Gale, ye Diamond Rign I formerly us’d to wear, being all Diamonds.

Item. I give to Mr. George Durant one Mourning Ring, value thirty Shillings.

Item. I sett at perfect freedom from all Slavery to be claimed by my Heirs, Executors, &c., my Negro Woman Jane, for her diligent care had of me in my Sickness.

All the Rest, Residue & Remainder of my Estate W’tsoever & wheresoever to be found I give & bequeath to my Son, Hecklefeild, & I further Nominate, make, constitute & appoint Mr. Edmond Gale & Mr. George Durant, Executors of this my last Will & Testam’t, & Guardians to my sd. Son, John Hecklefeild, that they my afors’d Executors shall have the Tuition & Education of my sd. Son until he arrive at the age of Twenty & one years after the best thought manner this Country will admitt.

What Negroes he hath Capable of it, I desire they may be hired yearly to Good paymasters for the better Support of my Sd. Son. And I further desire, that watsoever of his Estate will not be thought Serviceable to him when he shall come of Age, may be disposed of for good pay & converted into Young Negro Women for his use.

But if my sd. Son do die before he be of the Age of Twenty & one years w’ch (by Gods blessing) will be in the year one thousand, Seven Hundred & Thirty seven, then w’t Estate I have by this Will given to him, I give & bequeath as follows, viz: the one half p’t thereof to my Sister in Law, Mrs. Mary Cox, or her heirs, living near Essex Bridge, in Dublin, in Ireland; the other half p’t to Mr. Edm’d. Gale.

In Witness whereof, I hereto set my hand & seal this thirtieth day of May, in ye year of our Lord, 1721.

John Hecklefield, Seal & declare the within Will to be his last Will & Testam’t & y’t Wm. Berclift & Enoch Flower, the other two Evidences thereto were then Present; that ye Sd. Hecklefeild was then of Sound Memory & sign’d the same without any Constraint or compulsion.
