WRIGHT

  • Jeffrie Wright was granted 50a of land in Norfolk Co Va, for his own trans’ lying in Linkhorn (Princess Anne Co). John Wright a subject in the Colony at Jamestown, Jan 1609 (Browns Genesis to America). Thomas Wright had 250a of land granted him, Dec 16, 1647, for trans’ Peter, & Robert Langley, & Ursula Baylie. He made his will in Isle of Wight Co Va, p Sept 9, 1701, naming sons: John, (who was under age) James, “all my Coopers tools,” Thomas, & Joseph, dau Mary, wife Elizabeth. Test’ George, & Violet Wright.
  • Ann, William, & Joseph Wright of Nansemond Co Va, acted as Exrs, of the will of John Wright of Albemarle, Gent; Sept 14, 1694. Ann Wright here mentioned is named in the will of William Townsend of Perq Co, as daughter, April 1767. Christopher Wright, & wife Elizabeth of N. C. “late of Princess Anne Co Va,” sold to Simon Stone, a plantation on Western Shore of Princess Anne Co, 462½a, 352½a of which was purchased of Cornelius Calvert, & Elizabeth his wife, Nov 1751. Seal Nov 20, 1778. Dr Wright was brother of John, and both were sons of Wm Wright of Nansemond Co, who died 1750. Stephen Wright m Katherine Bond, Aug 13, 1724, in Princess Anne Co. William Wright m Mary Butt, Feb 15, 1744, same county. Samuel Wright petitioned for Adm of Estate of Comfort Dowdy, dec’d, “being nearest kin” (no date). He died in Perq Co, before July 16, 1757, when his Estate was divided; heirs: Thomas, Mary, Hannah, Samuel Wright. His Inventory Dec 3, 1757, Elizabeth Wright Admix. Said Elizabeth is named in the will of Thomas Barclift, as daughter, Jan 1750/1.

WHITE

Thomas White was a subject in the colony at Jamestown, 1609. (Browns Genesis to America.)

James White in Va same date, at same place. Henry White of York Co Va, had a son Henry, who moved to Isle of Wight. From the dates it seems probable that this was the identical Henry White who migrated to Perq Precinct N. C., before 1670. He built the first Quaker Church in Perquimans, thought to be Little River Mo meeting, which was about where Woodville is situated. Just beyond the confines of this village can be seen at the present time an old Quaker burying ground, with small stones such as were in common use at that day among the simple Quakers. Meetings were held at the house of Henry White, 26, 4mo 1690, at which time, James Davis (s of William) and Elizabeth White (d of Henry) of Albemarle, took each other as man and wife. Another Quarterly meeting convened at the house of Henry White, 1, 3mo 1695, when it was “agreed that Robert Wilson, Francis Toms, & Henry White, doe write a letter in behalf of the Meeting, to friends at yearly meeting in London.” At a meeting held at the house of Arnold White, 24, 4mo 1679, there were present: Henry White, Timothy Meade, Francis Toms, Charles Moris, Jonathan Tailer, Arnold White, George Tailer, Mary White, Rebecka Simons, Solomon Pool, & Margaret White. The children of Solomon Pool were registered at this meeting, as follows: Richard, b 2, 3mo 1680—Ane, b 12, 2mo 1682—Mary, b 15, 10mo 1683—Solomon (2) b 23, 4mo 1687.

As Arnold appears in Perq simultaneously with Henry White, the inference may be drawn with some certainty, that they were brothers, but the records do not mention the fact. John and William White also made their entry into Perquimans about the same time, and they may also be brothers.

The will of Henry White, p in Albemarle, Sept 19, 1706, names the following issue: Henry, Arnold, Isaac, Robert, & John, to whom he devised his “Maner plantation,” dau’s: Content and Naomy. (No wife is mentioned.) Henry White bought land in Surry Co Va, June 9, 1655 (Surry records). He made an affidavit in Perq Co, 1689, giving his age as 57 years. (Gen’l Court, May 26, 1689.)

  • White, William, was a passenger for Va, in Primrose July 27, 1625, Comd of Capt Douglas. William, and John who came to Perquimans about the same date of Henry’s arrival, may have been his brothers. They quickly disappear from the records in Perq. John m Margaret Titerton (widow of William, née Hall), Jan 18, 1685. John Waite died Jan 14, 1691. According to his will p in Perq, Apl 4, 1692, he left no heirs. The legatees in said will being wife Margaret, William & Elizabeth Tetterton (Step-children).
  • White, William, m Margery Williams, September 1693. He had by a former wife Rebecka, issue: 1 Sarah, b Oct 13, 1681—2 Thomas, b Nov 17, 1684—3 Samuel, b Dec 2, 1687. William White died Jan 14, 1687. Margery his wife, d Oct 14, 1704.
  • White, Thomas (probably a brother of John, & William) m Diana Foster née Maners, widow of Wm Foster, m 1675 d Oct 9, 1687. She had by first husband Francis & Elizabeth Foster, named in his will—Oct 9, 1687. Diana White m 3 times, 1st Thomas Harris, Clerk of Perq, 2d William Foster, & 3rd Thomas White. Perq Court was held in the house of Thomas Harris, and after his death, 1679, at the house of Diana Harris, Sept 1679, and still later, at the house of Thomas White, presumably the same house each time. Thomas White in his will Mar 11, 1695, names wife Diana, and William Collins, who it is thought m Elizabeth Harris, d of Diana by her 1st husband.
  • White, Robert, (s of Henry) will Albemarle, April 19, 1698. Sons: Vincent, Robert, d Mary, friend Thomas Jones. Robert (2) lived in Pasq Co, where his will was p April 16, 1733, Sons: Jonathan, Zapaniah, Joseph, dau’s: Ann, Elizabeth.

He died before Mar 10, 1730, will p on that date, names son John, and dau’s Rachel, Sarah, Elizabeth, Hulde, sister Mary, wife Sarah, who m 2d Jacob Elliott. She was John Whites 2d wife, he having m 1st Elizabeth Newby.
  • White, Jean, Relict of Roger White, m 2d John Wilkinson, Jan 9, 1686. (Berkeley Reg.)
  • Henry White made affidavit in Perq 1689, that he “knew Samuel Davis in Isle of Wight Co Va”, “where he was an apprentice of Henry White his father” before 1660, said Samuel also migrating to N. C.
  • White, Edmund, m Millicent Toms, In, 3mo 1788, at Welles meeting house, in Perq. It is not positively known which branch of Whites he belongs to. He certainly had one son Edmund (s of Edmund, & Mary dec’d) of Pasq Co, m Margaret Nixon (s of Samuel, & Rachel dec’d of Perq) 15, 5mo 1816, at Suttons Creek meeting house. Margaret wife of Edmond died 14, 11mo 1827.

WHITE

Thomas White Line

  • In Perquimans Co. there seems to have been two separate, & distinct, lines of this family, that of Henry White, and the descendants of Thomas, of Isle of Wight Co Va. Henry White pioneered to N. C. much earlier than the last named. It is thought, but not proven, that Thomas of Isle of Wight, was a descendant of John White, who came to Va, from New England, & took up land in Norfolk Co.
  • Elder John White, b 1596 in Essex Co England, arrived in New England, 1632, settled at Cambridge, Mass. John White (uncle of Peregrine, s of William, & Ann (Fuller) White) came to Norfolk Va, 1679, where he m Mary — & had John Nicholas, b in Norfolk 1689. John White, of the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River, Yeoman—apt’ Anthony Bonford, of Chuckatuck, Nanzimund Co, planter—Att’ to sell unto Paul Luke, of Isle of Wight, Land, Cattle, Household stuff, in sd Co, belonging to his wife Edy Lewellin, d of Thomas, formerly of said Co, for 300 lbs of Tob.   • White, Thomas, will Perq, book C p 1, p Jan 1762. He bequeathed, to wife Rachel, a negro called Judah, & a negro girl Priscilla, a mare, called “Pink” and a horse, called “Sorrel,” 1 large looking glass, and 1 square table. Sons: Joshua, Thomas, Joseph, John, Matthew, Caleb, and Benjamin (not of age), dau’s Mary Winslow, (to whom he left a “large looking glass”) Sarah, gr-dau’s Sarah, & Mary Pritchard.
  • White, Joshua, (eldest son of Thomas) will Perq, p Apl 25, 1784, names s Jacob, (to whom he left 125a of land, on both sides of Cypress Swamp) s Zachariah, s Joshua (Plan’ where I now live) dau’s Mourning, Mary, & Elizabeth, wife Mary. (His 2d wife probably) d Margaret Moore, & son-in-law Samuel Moore.
  • White, Zachariah, will Perq, p Nov 1808, names legatees. Wife Miriam, dau’s Margaret, Mary Davis, s Joshua, dau’s Miriam, Sarah, s Francis.
  • White, Jacob, s of Joshua (1) will Perq, p Nov 1816, named wife Miriam, sons: Josiah, Robinson, Theophilus, Joshua, dau’s Jemmimah Guyer, & Polly White.
  • White, Joshua, (2) will Perq, p Feb 1831, names son James, wife Sallie, s Gabriel, s Theophilus.
  • White, Joshua, (3) will Perq, p Nov 1865, Wife Emily, son Joshua W. (Warren) White, Millicent Pearce, Charles Willis Pearce, Mary A. Winslow.

From this line sprang Dr White of Suffolk Va, who is a son of Joshua W. White, named in the last will. (See Jordan family, for Rachel Whites Will.)

White, Mourning, spoken of in the Henry White line, as wife of John White, & mother Robert, (who m Rebeccah Albertson,) may have been a d of Joshua (1) & wife Gulielma. The Whites, & Winslows, crossed so many times, it is difficult to distinguish, one from another. Robert (s of John) died 25, 6mo 1830. This seems all the more to be credited, from the fact that Robert, & Rebeccah had a son named Jordan White, b 8, 9mo 1821, died 21, 6mo 1822.

White, Joseph, (s of Joshua, & Rachel (Jordan) White) is mentioned in his will, but his age is not given. From the fact that five years intervened, between the date of Elizabeth, & Joshua Jordans ages, it is probable that he is the one between. Benjamin White also has no birth date, but we know from his fathers will, that he was the youngest child.

His Inventory shows: 7 horses, 3 cattle, 19 sheep, 13 hogs, 63 hives of bees, 8 punch bowls, 4 dram glasses, 3 “sets of Shoemakers tools” 6 pewter dishes, 8 pewter basins, 27 plates, 24 spoons, & 1 pewter cup, 12 geese, 32 turkeys, “1 cow in the field” rice in the field, parcel of potatoes, (not housed) a barrel of fish, and cash £41 s4, on hand.

  • The will of William White, p in Perq Aug 18, 1772, names sons: Joseph (who died before his mother Margaret made her will) William, & Josiah, dau’s: Elizabeth Jordan, Margaret Toms, Sarah White, wife Margaret.
  • Benjamin White, “an Elder,” died 16, 11mo 1789, age 53. He had been an elder in the Quaker Meeting for 17 years. (Quaker records.)

SPEIGHT

  • Francis Speight age 21 years, came to Va, in Thomas, & John, June 16, 1635, from London. He was granted 300a in Nansemond Co Va, Mar 17, 1654, “by a White Marsh.” This grant was probably in what is now Gates Co N. C. as the deeds mention land called by that name in said county, and it is positively known that the early Speights lived in Gates before coming to Perq.
  • John Speight was granted 300a, April 21, 1684, “formerly granted to Francis Speight; and William Speight received a grant for 520a April 21, 1695,” on East side of Bennetts Creek. As Bennetts Creek runs through Gates Co, and persons bearing this name were later found there, we are led to believe both these grants were situated in the same locality.
  • William Speight of Nansemond Co Va, made a deed in Chowan Co N. C., June 26, 1735, to his “son-in-law” Moses Hare, 100a “on Horse Pen Branch,” witnessed by Edward Speight, Thos. Speight, and Ann Speight. From legal papers in Perq it appears that Thomas Speight m Mary — issue: 1 Isaac—2 Ruth, m Joseph Jordan—3 Zilpah, m Timothy Walton—4 (daughter) m Solomon Sheppard—5 Elizabeth, m Christopher Benn of Isle of Wight Co., Va. Priscilla Speight m Thos. Jordan of Va.
  • Thomas Speight made his will in Perquimans Co, p April 27, 1737. Sons: Isaac, and Moses, dau’s: Rachel, Ruth Jorden, and Zilpah Blanchard (wife of Aaron) wife Mary. (His wife may probably have been — Rountree.)
  • Mary Speight, will Bertie Co, p May 7, 1743, names the identical children, except that she names two gr-dau’s Mary, & Elizabeth Speight, but whose children they were is not specified.
  • <Francis Speight of Chowan Co, will p Jan 1749. Names sons: Moses (to whom he left a “plantation at Contenteny,” (which is in Wayne Co N. C.) John, and Joseph, (to the last, “land in wolfpit valley,” (which appears as a location in several deeds in Perquimans Co) Brother William Speight. wife Kathern.
  • Isaac Speight had issue: Mary, Isaac (2) and Elizabeth.

DAVIS

  • Thomas Davis of  Warricksqueake, planter—son of James, late of Henrico, in Vir’ dec’d, was granted 300a of land on Warricksqueake Creek, “100 in right of his father, an ancient planter, who came to Va in the “George” 1617, and 100a in right of his mother Rachel, wife of sd James.” Mar 6, 1633. Thomas made deposition in Norfolk Co Va 1640. He sold a grant from Sir Wm Berkeley June 1, 1649, to Thomas Maros, who sold sd land 400a unto Robert Bowers, who in like manner gave the land to his dau Mary, wife of Thomas Davis, and was conveyed by them Nov 14, 1708, unto Phillip Reynolds Mer’cht, “lying on W. side of Western Branch,” in which deed Thomas Davis is styled, “of Nansemond Co. planter.”
  • Thomas Cook, & Mary his wife “to make good” to John Davis, & Mary his wife, all of Isle of Wight Co, conveyed land to them, on Neck Swamp, Oct 6, 1677. The records of said county, give the will of John Davis “of upper pish” Isle of Wight Co, p June 28, 1714. He names wife Mary, sons: Thomas, Samuel, William, and dau Mary (wife of William Murray) dau’s: Sarah, Elizabeth, & Prudence, gr-dau Elizabeth Murray.
  • Samuel Davis (s of John) will same county; p June 6, 1751. d. s. p. Leg: Mother Amey Jones, to whom he bequeathed “plan’ at Meherrin,” at her death to sister Mary White, at her death to cousin Ann White, negro girl to sister Sarah Davis, sister Amey Davis, sister Marshillah Davis.
  • Samuel Davis, planter, “sone of Samuel, late of Isle of Wight Co Vir” appointed Nicholas Cobb, his Att’ to dispose of his dec’d fathers Estate, in said county July 23, 1667. Samuel Davis, & Ann his wife removed to Albemarle 1660, and had several children, the eldest being Samuel. (Affidavit of Henry White, who knew them in Isle of Wight Co.) “Samuel Davis of Albemarle in Carolina, heir of Samuel dec’d, and cousin of Ann his wife,” sold to John Bond of Isle of Wight Co, 100a of land, which was grt unto Thomas Edghill, by John Harvey, 1637, and by him assigned to William Strange, Mar 2, 1639, “who sold sd land to my father, June 11, 1642.” Seal May 12, 1668. Test’ Nicholas Cobb, Edward Hickman. (Isle of Wight Rec.) *In Surry Co Va a deed was made by John Davis, & wife Elizabeth “heiress of Roger Rawlings, late of Surry Co,” unto Thomas Lane Jr, for 5000 lbs of Tob, sold 50a on Lawnes Creek, “pish of Southwarke, plantation my father died on.” Dec 29, 1705. Sarah Bond Executrix of Richard Bond deced & John Perry complaine against John Keatton of North Carolina aforesayd planters alias Dick: John Keatton of the upper parish of Nansemond County in Virginia in custody of the Marshall &c. of a place that he render to them the full & just Sum of thirty pounds current & lawfull money of Virginia which to them he oweth & unjustly detaines &c for that to witt that whereas the sayd Deft. in the province of North Carolina aforesd on the twenty fifth day of October Anno Dm One thousand seven hundred twenty seven by his certain Bond Signed with the sayd Defts marke sealed with his Seale dated the same day and year & here in Court produced did firmly bind himself to payment the sayd Richard Bond & John Perry the aforesayd sum of thirty pounds current & lawfull money of Virginia when he should be thereto
required yet Nevertheless the sayd Deft the aforesayd Sum of thirty pounds current & lawfull money of Virginia to the sayd Richard Bond in his lifetime next to his Exetrx since his death & John Perry hath not payd nor to either of them tho he hath been often thereto required but the same to do hath altogether denyed & refuted which is to their damage twenty pounds & therefore

Whereas in the Suite brought by Sarah Bond Executrix of Richard Bond deced against Edward Moudlin, Richard Whedbee & Joshua Toms at October Genl. Court last the Said Edward Moudlin tho Solomnly required came not and the Marshall having returned the Writt Executed on his Body but fild no baile bond therefore at the Plats. Mocon an order was past against the Marshall for two hundred & twenty pounds Damages with Costs and at the Sayd Marshall’s request an Attachment was then and there granted against the Estate of the Said Edward for the like damages with all accruing Costs returnable to the next Court the last Tuesday in March next.

Wee therefore autherise and impower you to attach the Goods & Chattells of ye said Edward Moudlin if to be found in your Bailiwick, to ye Value of ye damages aforesd. with Costs repleyable on Security given & Safely keep ye same so as to compell him to appear at ye next Genl. Court to be held for this Governmt. at Edenton on ye last Tuesday in March next to make answer to the Plea of the Plt: aforesd. herein faile not & make due return.

Know all men by these presents that I, John Keatton of the upper parrish of Nansd. County in Virginia am held and firmly bound unto Richard Bond and John Perry of the place aforesd. in the full and just sum of thirty pounds current and lawfull money of Virginia to the which payment well and truly to be made I bind my self my heirs executors and administrators firmly by these presents as witness my hand and seale this 25th day of October Anno Dom. 1727.

The Condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound John Keatton his heirs Exers. or admrs. shall and do make and deliver or cause to be made and delivered to the above written Bond and Perry a good and sufficient title sufficient to warrant the said Richard Bond and John Perry in quiet and peaceable possession of one hundred and fifty eight acres of land lying and being in Pequimons precinct on the northeast side of Pequimons River joyning on the line of Nathanell Sutton it to be complyed with att the request of the said Richard Bond and John Perry then the above obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise to stand and abide in full force and virtue.
