When he got out enough gold to sell, he hauled it to a dealer in Forest City, North Carolina in his horse-drawn wagon. After the death of Victoria (Vic), Joe lived alone. He died in a tragic house fire on 27 December 1947. His daughter, Anna Lou and her husband lived nearby. They awakened with extreme horror and stood by helplessly.
