Hughes Map Index Guilford M-Z

Early Landowners of Current Guilford Area

continued from: Hughes Map Index A to L

These names are on the Guilford Early Landowners Map prepared by Fred Hughes and sold by Guilford County Genealogical Society). Items in capital letters are landmarks. Listings under the same name do not mean that all those tracts of land were owned by the same person. They could have been owned by two or more different men going by the same name.  Remember that spellings may vary. This list shows you which names can be found on the map, and the key tells you where.  The grid runs 1 to 6 west to east and A to F north to south.  This is a sample of what the map will show you:

Guilford County was formed from Rowan and Orange counties in 1771. The western 2/3 of Old Guilford came from Old Rowan County, and the eastern 1/3 came from Old Orange County. Records prior to 1 April 1771 will be found in Rowan or Orange records. The old Rowan/Orange line runs north to south through the western half of the sections with a “5” in their code.

Remember that the use of “Sr” and “Jr” had different meanings two hundred years ago. “Jr” was a younger man in the same court’s jurisdiction by the same name. It did not imply a familial relationship with a man who had the same name and was labeled “Sr” — although that could be the case. Also, the same man could be called “Jr” one year and “Sr” a few years later because of the arrival or departure or death of another man in the same county.
