Tax List of 1813, Deep River District

Last night I added a page on the 1813 tax list.  As far as I know, only the Deep River District (southwest Guilford) survives from that list.  I do plan to get color images of the pages themselves, but the transcription will serve in the meantime.   You’ll find the page in the list of pages in the right-hand column, and I’m adding it to the menu above.

City Directories

A new link has been added to the Research Resources page, for a site mentioned in today’s issue of the Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter:  A Century of North Carolina City Directories, 1860-1963.  City directories are a great resource.

Giants in the Land: NC Yearly Meeting Leaders (Quakers)

I received a notice of a new publication: Giants in the Land: North Carolina Yearly Meeting Leaders, by Billy M. Britt, published in Greensboro in 2012 by the NC Yearly Meeting of Friends. This book contains biographies of Mary Williams Chawner Woody, Eli Reece, Alice Paige White, Eli Franklin Craven, Lewis W. McFarland, Fredric Earl Carter, Hope Hubbard, Murray Cox Johnson, Luby Randolph Casey, Algie Inman Newlin, Byron Allen Haworth, Sam and Miriam Levering, A. Scott Parker, Seth Bennett Hinshaw, J. Isaac Harris, and J. Victor Murchison.  A good number of these individuals had Guilford roots.  You can find this book available for sale on Ebay, or you can Google the title and author to find other sellers.

Bastardy Bonds

As I continue work gathering marriage records for the website, I have added more bastardy bond images and information, and that work will continue over the coming weeks.  Most families have an illegitimate child or two in their ancestry, so this type of record is worth checking out if you can’t seem to find the parents for someone from the area, or the information you can find is not verified by data or conflicts with other information.

Maxwell-Russell Bible Record

Information from a Maxwell-Russell Bible was posted on a new Bible Records page linked to the menu.  It has also been submitted to the NCGenWeb Archives for this site.

Court Records 1781 – 1811

I stumbled across a set of transcriptions of early Guilford court records from 1781 to 1811.  The first ten years of Guilford court records were burned, lost, or stolen at the time of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, so we do not have court records from 1771 to August Term 1781.  These PDF files were difficult to find on the Greensboro government website, so I downloaded them and then uploaded and linked them to the Court & Land Records page, so that you can download them and use them in your research.

Tax Lists

I just published a page on this site about Guilford tax lists, linked to the Records tab in the menu.  I have made available images of the 1815 Tax List, which is stored at the NC State Archives in Raleigh.  The link on that page goes to my own Picasa account, where the images are housed.  I also have photocopies of the 1813 Tax List, which I will be making available as soon as possible.  In addition, I plan to publish website pages which will have surname indexes to both tax lists.

Please respect the copyright, and do not republish any of the images or indexes in any form without my consent, and that includes the internet.  You may download some of them for your private research purposes, but images can be copyrighted.  This effort has and will take a lot of my personal time, and I want to reserve all rights to these images.

Hughes Map Index

I added a list of early Guilford land owners shown on the Hughes map. There are two pages — surnames A-L and surnames M-Z. The Hughes map is available from the Guilford County Genealogical Society. It’s a great asset for those researching multiple family lines in the county. The new pages are linked to both the Maps and the Records tabs in the menu above.

Oakwood Cemetery CW burials & Pleasant Garden UMC

Some material from the old site has been converted to three new pages.  Information on Civil War burials in Oakwood Cemetery in High Point has been set up on its own page including pictures you can find in EyeEm for some better illustration in both the pdf versions and the web versions.  And a PDF booklet on Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church has been transcribed onto two pages, one for the church, and one for the cemetery (with a list of older burials).  Those are now linked to the main menu.  If someone wants the Pleasant Garden UMC booklet PDF, which is too large to post to the site, please contact me, and I’ll send it by email.
