d125     NELSON HARRIS; b. (c) 1756; d. May 9, 1820.

71

Nelson was born in an area of North Carolina which is now Warren County.

Nelson served as a soldier in the American Revolution.  His term of enlistment was from April 1, 1781 to April 12, 1782.  He was a sergeant in a company commanded by Captain Lytle, in the 10th Regiment of the North Carolina Continental Line, which was commanded by Colonel Abraham Sheppard.

Nelson married Nancy Long on November 30, 1792 in Warren County, North Carolina.  Nancy was born about 1774 in (present day) Warren County, North Carolina.

Nancy was the daughter of Drury and Sarah Green Long.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph and Ann Green.

Joseph Green died in 1775.  He signed his will on June 14, 1775.  It was probated in August, 1775.  Joseph, in his will, named his wife, Ann, his sons, Josiah and William, his daughters, Charlotte Green Duke and Sarah Green Long.  He, also, named his grandchildren, Nancy Long and Josiah Green Duke.  Joseph, also, identified his real and personal property on Reedy Creek in North Carolina and land in Southampton County, Virginia.  Joseph’s wife, Ann Turner, was the daughter of Burchet Lundy (daughter of Elizabeth Burchet and James Lundy) and Joseph Turner.  Ann’s sister, Mary Turner, married West Harris (d121/7).

Sarah (Sally) Green had married Drury Long in Bute County, North Carolina on July 19, 1773.  Drury died in 1778.  He signed his will on December 5, 1776.  It was probated in August, 1778.  Drury, in his will, named his wife, Sally, his daughters, Nancy and Betsy, and also a child in esse.  He, also, named his brother, John Long, and his good friend and brother-in-law, Josiah Green.

Drury also identified his plantation land.

The marriage bond for Nelson Harris was signed by his cousin, Jordan Harris.  Jordan was the son of Captain Daniel Harris.  Jordan was also a Warren County official.

Nelson and Nancy acquired 55 acres of land in Warren County after their marriage.

Nelson, in 1796, bought a yearling (cow) from the estate of John Bobbitt.  He witnessed a will concerning the estate and was also involved in settling that estate.

Nelson and Nancy sold 55 acres of land in Warren County to the estate of Dudley Hale on January 10, 1796.

Their first two children, Guilford and Zelpha, were born in Warren County, North Carolina.

Nelson, Nancy, and their children joined other family members and friends in moving to Greene County, Georgia in 1797.

Their home in Greene County was located on the waters of Sherrills Creek.  This area is located east of the Union Point and north of the U.S. Highway 278.

Nelson, on March 5, 1803, acquired 150 acres of land in Greene County from Theophiles Burk for $600.  The family moved to the next county south, Hancock, in the fall of 1808.

They sold their land in Greene County in March of 1809.  They acquired 150 acres of land in Hancock County from Benjamin Boone on April 28, 1809 for $900.  Also, on the same day, they acquired 175 acres of land in Hancock County from Abner Wheelin for $406.  Nelson, on February 13, 1818, acquired 271 acres of land on Dredge Creek in Hancock County from Cornelius Clark for $1,000.

Participating in the Georgia land lottery of 1820, Nelson acquired 250 acres of land in the newly created Early County, Georgia.

Nelson and his family lived in the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County.

Three other Harris families were also living in this community.  The family of Samuel Harris built a large mill on Shoulderbone Creek in the 1820s.  That mill was still producing waterground meal within the last year or so.   The “Old Harris Mill” at Shoulderbone (Georgia Roads 16 and 77) is a very impressive view today.  Shoulderbone Creek forms in Greene County and passes through an area of Hancock County as it flows into the Oconee River.

Piecing bits of information together, we conclude that Nancy died in December of 1818.  Nancy and Nelson are probably buried a few miles to the north with Nelson’s father, Matthew.  The Greene County history, in listing the Revolutionary War veterans buried in that county, included the names, “Matthew Harris and N. Harris”.

Children of Nancy and Nelson Harris:

1.       Guilford Harris; b. September 7, 1793; d. February 15, 1864.

2.       Zelpha Harris; b. (c) 1794; d. after October 24, 1863.

3.       Seaborn Harris; b. 1798; d. after November 19, 1887.

4.       Hixsey Harris; b. 1802; d. after February 1, 1894.

5.       Drury Long Harris; b. 1804.

6.       Alston Green Harris; b. January 12, 1806; d. October 17, 1896.

7.       James Harris; b. January 4, 1809.

8.       Matthew P. Harris; b. June, 1810; d. 1903.

Nancy’s death was, indeed, a tragedy for Nelson and his small children.  It was a fortunate thing for them all when Nelson found another wife, companion, and mother for his small children.  Elizabeth was born about 1788 in Virginia.  She died at Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas after 1868.

Nelson signed his will on April 4, 1820.  The will was probated on July 3, 1820 in Hancock County, Georgia.

At the time of his death, Nelson owned 584.5 acres of land in Hancock County and 250 acres in Early County, Georgia.

Nelson provided in his will that the estate be maintained for the benefit of all of the children until each one reached maturity.

This was accomplished by his Executors.  The Executors were his three oldest sons: Guilford, Seaborn, and Drury.

The Executors supervised the operations of the farm and other land.

Later, the Executors purchased land for Elizabeth and the smaller children in Upson County, near Thomaston, Georgia.

After the children had all reached maturity, Elizabeth Harris lived with her youngest child, Jane Harris Prater.  She moved with them to Columbia County, Arkansas in March of 1854.

Elizabeth received her share of her husband’s estate on April 7, 1829.

The children of Elizabeth and Nelson Harris:

9.       Merimoth Harris; b. July, 1813; d. prior to December 10, 1868.

10.   Clara Harris; b. January 15, 1815; d. May 14, 1859.

11.   Nancy Harris; b. March, 1818.

Jane Harris; b. June 12, 1820; d. March 7, 1914.

d125     GUILFORD HARRIS; b. September 7, 1793; d. February 15, 1864.

711

Guilford was born in Warren County, North Carolina.  Guilford stated some of his own family history in documents that are still on file in the State of North Carolina.  These documents were produced at the request of the State of North Carolina as the State responded to the petition of Elizabeth Thomas Harris (Guilford’s step-mother).

Elizabeth petitioned the State of North Carolina for a Revolutionary War widow’s pension in the right of the military service of Nelson Harris.

Responding to the State’s request, Guilford made affidavit in Fayette County, George on August 30, 1859.  Guilford confirmed that he was the son of Nelson Harris and Nancy Long.  He confirmed that his father had eight children by Nancy Long and that he had married Elizabeth Thomas after the death of Nancy.  He stated that Nelson had four children by Elizabeth.

Guilford also confirmed that his father had lived in Warren County, North Carolina and that he had removed from North Carolina to Greene County, Georgia between 1793 and 1797.  He also cited his own young age at the time of the move to Georgia.

Guilford had, indeed, moved with his family to Greene County, Georgia in 1797 when he was about four years of age.  The family was living in the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County, Georgia in the fall of 1808.

Guilford married Mariah Clarke (Clark) on December 21, 1819 at Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.  Mariah was the daughter of Rebecca Priscilla Sledge and Robert Clark.  See Ties Between the Harris, Sledge, and Clarke (Clark) Families in Addendum Appendix I.

Mariah was born on May 27, 1803 in Georgia.  She died on August 8, 1897 in Clayton County, Georgia.

Although Guilford was named as an Executor of his father’s will, he was not present when the will was offered for probate by his brother, Seaborn, on July 3, 1820 in Hancock County.

Guilford qualified as an Executor of his father’s will, before the Hancock County court, on February 5, 1821.

Guilford purchased 51 acres of land in the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County, Georgia from Samuel Turner for $200 on April 6, 1824.  The deed stated that Guilford was “of Hancock County”.

Guilford was recorded as being a landowner in the newly created Fayette County, Georgia in 1827.

Guilford and his uncle, Morris Harris, apparently moved west to the Jonesboro Georgia area, with their families, about 1825.

Guilford, on January 15, 1830, purchased 130 acres of land on the waters of the Flint River in Fayette County, Georgia from Thomas Blake.  He continued to add to his land holdings.

Guilford’s home was located about 2.5 miles west of Jonesboro on Flint River Road.  More exactly, the homeplace was located south of Flint River Road between Bethel Baptist Church and Thomas Road.  His land holdings extended to the north of Flint River Road and to the west of Thomas Road.

Guilford’s brother, Seaborn, lived just to the northwest of him in the Kenwood area.  His uncle, Morris Harris, lived to the south of him in the area of Mundys Mill Road, Thomas Road, and the Jonesboro-Fayetteville Road.

The area of Guilford’s home was included in Clayton County when it was created in 1858.

The Clayton County Interior Court (County Commissioners), in the fall of 1861, levied a special tax to assist the needy families of Confederate soldiers fighting in the War Between the States.

A committee of esteemed citizens was selected to oversee this activity.  Guilford was selected to serve on this committee from the Jonesboro District.  Also, selected from the Jonesboro District was Abner Camp.  Abner was the husband of Guilford’s first cousin, Mary M. Harris Camp.

During the Battle of Jonesboro, which occurred in 1864, Union forces marshaled their soldiers and equipment on the high ground located on the Guilford Harris farm.  Guilford had died of smallpox earlier in the year.

Guilford provided well for his family in his will which was signed on February 8, 1864.

Guilford named his sons, Robert Nelson, Silas Alston, and Oliver Frank to execute his will.

Guilford left the operational control of his estate in the hands of his wife.  He referred to her as Mariah H. Harris.

Mariah was given power to sell surplus land and stocks as needed to maintain herself and the younger children.

Guilford has, earlier, given some land to his sons.

Guilford was a Baptist in his faith.  As was the custom of his forefathers, he expressed his faith in God in the preamble of his will.

Nothing is left of the estate of Guilford Harris except for the family cemetery.  The cemetery is located to the rear of 228 Leafwood Lane, Clayton Ridge Subdivision.

The cemetery is located on a knoll of slightly higher ground with several large oak trees.

The Harris graves, as near as we can tell through the undergrowth, are unmarked.

Five graves in the cemetery belong to the Whaley and Jones families.  Some refer to this cemetery as the Whaley family cemetery.

Several people through the years have assisted the write in identifying the relatives buried here.  Miss Dolly Mann of Jonesboro, Georgia, in 1953 listed those buried here for the writer.

Dolly was the granddaughter of Guilford and Mariah Harris.

Mrs. Rosie Belle Morgan Jones, a granddaughter of Oliver Frank Harris, told the writer that, as a teenager, she witnessed the burial of her grandfather’s sister, Sallie Harris Jones, in this cemetery.

She said that it was raining in November of 1906 when the casket of Sallie Jones was carried from the porch of her grandfather’s house.  They walked the casket from the house to the cemetery.

Those buried in the cemetery are as follows: James S. Harris and Guilford T. Harris, sons of Guilford and Mariah Harris; Augusta Harris, son of Oliver Frank Harris; Guilford and Mariah Harris; Sarah W. (Sallie) Harris Jones and her husband Thomas R. Jones (Sarah was the daughter of Guilford and Mariah); Clyde Jones and Sam W. Jones, sons of Thomas R. Jones by a previous marriage; Emily Whaley Jones, wife of Sam W. Jones; William Whaley and wife, Sarah Knight, parents of Emily Whaley Jones.

The above map, produced by the State of Georgia, shows a part of Clayton County and an eastern area of Fayette County, Georgia.

The letter “A” designates where the home of Guilford Harris, son of Nelson Harris (d125/71) and grandson of Matthew Harris, was located.  This was about 2 miles west of Jonesboro on the south side of Flint River Road.  Seaborn Harris, a brother of Guilford Harris, lived in the Kenwood area of Fayette County.  His home is designated by the letter “B”.  The family cemetery of Guilford Harris, also called the Whaley Cemetery, is located at “A”.  Guilford, his wife, Mariah Clark, and three of their children are buried here.  These are James S., Guilford T., and Sallie Harris and her husband, Thomas R. Jones.  Three of the children of Mariah and Guilford Harris are also buried in the Mann Cemetery, which is designated by the letter “C”.  The Mann Cemetery is located on Kendrick Road, west of Jonesboro.  The children of Mariah and Guilford Harris who are buried here include: Oliver Frank Harris and his wife, Ri?? Jane Edna Flournoy; Mary Jane Harris and her husband, James M. Mann; Saphronia Clark Harris and her husband, Stephen A. Mann.  Many of the descendants of these families are also buried here.

Morris Harris (d125/73), the son of Matthew Harris, brother of Nelson Harris, and uncle of Guilford and Seaborn Harris, lived in the vicinity of Thomas Road, Mundy Mill Road, and the Jonesboro-Fayetteville Road.  The three daughters of Morris all lived here:  Eliza T. Harris and her husband, Elijah P. Allen; Matilda Harris and her husband, Coleman A. Allen, Jr.; and Mary Harris and her husband, Abner Camp.  The residence, known now as the “Old Allen Place”, designated on the map as “D”, was on of the property of this family.  An old Allen cemetery of this family is located here.  Abner and Mary Harris Camp are buried with several of their descendants in the Camp Cemetery on Jodeco Road near Jonesboro.  This located is designated by the letter “E” (beneath the word Jonesboro).

d125     NANCY LONG HARRIS; b. October 4, 1820; d. August 7, 1905.

7111

Nancy was born in Georgia.  She was named for her paternal grandmother.  Her family was living in the Shoulderbone community (Georgia Roads 16 & 17), Hancock County, Georgia in 1824.  The family had made its home near Jonesboro, Georgia by the time Nancy was about six years of age.  This home was located on Flint River Road, about 2.5 miles west of Jonesboro.  This was part of Fayette County until it became Clayton County in 1858.

Nancy, at the age of seventeen years, married James P. Allen on January 4, 1838 in Jonesboro, Georgia.  James, the son of Woodson Palmer Allen, was born between 18—and 1810.  The elder Woodson Allen lived and died in Fayette (now Clayton) County, Georgia.  The other male children of Woodson Allen included: Patrick H. Allen, Elijah Phillips Allen, John P. Allen, William P. Allen, Lovick D. Allen, Woodson Allen, and Luke P. Allen.

Some of this Allen family are buried in the old Allen Cemetery located on Corinth Road in Fayette County, Georgia.

Nancy and James were living in the vicinity of Riverdale, Georgia in 1840.  Their home (landlot 214, district 13- 202.5 acres) was located on the west side of Taylor Road near Riverdale.

James and Nancy had moved to Chambers County, Alabama by the mid-1940s.  Woodson P. Allen, brother of James, also made his home in Chambers County.

James died late in the year 1849 in Chambers County, Alabama.  His brother, Woodson was named to administer his estate on November 26, 1849.  Later, on November 24, 1851, William Smith and Nancy Allen were appointed to complete administration of the estate.

Children of James and Nancy Allen:

1.       Mariah Ann (Maria) Allen; b. January 23, 1839; d. October 14, 1913.

2.       Martha Jane (Mattie) Allen; b. January 1, 1847; d. February 6, 1920.

3.       James Lovick Palmer (Jim) Allen; b. June 25, 1849; d. November 21, 1934.

Nancy married John P. LeMaster on December 25, 1851 in Chambers County, Alabama.  They lived at Hickory Flats, a community in the northeast area of Chambers County, Alabama.  Hickory Flats is located on the railroad that runs between LaGrange, Georgia and Roanoke, Alabama.

John was a farmer.  He was born about 1818 in South Carolina.  His parents may have been Ralph and Mary LeMaster who also lived in the Hickory Flats community.  Ralph was born in North Carolina, and Mary was born in South Carolina.

The name LeMaster is French.  The name means, literally, the (schoolmaster) teacher.

A substantial number of French Huguenot families had made their homes in South Carolina.  Perhaps the LeMasters were such a family.

The LeMasters, a little later, had also lived at Standing Rock community.  This community is located two miles east of Hickory Flats and on the same railroad.  Standing Rock is only a mile or so south of the Randolph County line.

This LeMaster family was living at Eclectic in Elmore County, Alabama by the year 1872.  They purchased 40 acres of land (the SE ¼ of the NE ¼ of Section 2, T-19, R-20) from Susan Cousins on December 18, 1872.  This land is located about 2 miles due north of the center of the town of Eclectic and on the waters of Channahatchee Creek.

John died at the age of 66 years on October 13, 1884.

Nancy, in 1900, was living in the Eclectic community with the family of her daughter, Martha Jane Allen Keith.  Nancy lived 10 months past her 84th birthday.

Nancy and John are buried where Pleasant Grove Methodist Church once stood in Eclectic.

Children of John P. and Nancy LeMaster:

4.       Samuel Silas LeMaster; b. January, 1855; d. 1932.

Maria was born near Riverdale, Georgia.  She was named for her grandmother, Mariah Clark Harris.  She moved with her family to Chambers County, Alabama in the mid 1840s.

Maria married William Franklin Strickland on December 16, 1858 in Chambers County, Alabama.  The ceremony was performed in the home of John S. Allen.

William was a farmer.  He was born in October, 1834 in Georgia.  Perhaps William was a part of the Strickland family who lived a few miles to the east, just across the state line in Heard County, Georgia.

Maria and William were living in the Rock Mills community of Randolph County, Alabama in 1860.  This area is only 5 miles or so north of the communities of Standing Rock and Hickory Flats, previously mentioned.  They were living near William’s relatives at Rock Mills.

William enlisted as a Confederate soldier in the War Between the States.  He served in Company F, 14th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers.  He was at Camp Bradford in Huntsville, Alabama on October 28, 1861 according to a letter he wrote to his wife.  William was wounded in combat but later returned to active duty.  He was killed in combat on June 25, 1864 near Darby Town, Virginia.

Maria, in 1870, was living in the Eclectic community of Elmore County, Alabama with her son, James Strickland, and her younger brother, James L. Allen.

After 1900, Maria moved with her son’s family to Montgomery, Alabama.  Maria, at the age of 71 years, was living on North Street in Dothan, Alabama in 1910.  At the time, she was living with her widowed daughter-in-law, Corrie K. Strickland, and Corrie’s sons, Lester Strickland and Paul Strickland.

Maria in her old age suffered a broken hip and used a wheel chair for mobility.

Maria is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Alabama with her son’s family.

Kimble.)  Corrie was born on July 7, 1862 in Alabama.  Her parents were Nancy Ann Willingham and Asbury Morgan Kimbrough who were married in Coosa County, Alabama on June 20, 1853.  This family, in 1860, was living in the Youngville community of Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

Corrie, in 1910, was living as a widow in Dothan, Alabama with her sons, Lester and Paul, and with her mother-in-law, Maria.

They, later, returned to Montgomery to live.  Corrie died on February 28, 1916 in Montgomery.
