_____________________ d125 JAMES HARRIS; b. c. 1720; d. 1800. 6 James was born in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia. James was listed as a member of a militia company in Granville County, North Carolina in 1754. This company was commanded by James’ first cousin, Captain Daniel Harris (d121/1). James and his brother, Matthew Harris, conveyed the land they had inherited from their father, Robert Harris, to Conyers Morris of Southampton County, Virginia in more than one deed, including the one dated November 12, 1767. This land is described as being 540 acres located in Southampton County and on the south side of the main Blackwater Swamp and in the vicinity of Warrick Branch. Robert Harris had acquired this land from his brother, Edward Harris, on April 20, 1715. Edward Harris had acquired this land as a grant from Alexander Spotswood, commander of the Colony, on November 13, 1713. Several other land deeds and wills, relating to this Harris family, mentioned the Warrick Branch and the Blackwater River, often called the Blackwater Swamp. Some of the land which Edward Harris conveyed to his children by will was located on the north side of the Blackwater River. The location of this land tells us where earlier generations of this family had lived. This area is located in the extreme northeast corner of Southampton County, Virginia. The road going east from the community of Ivor, on the Norfolk Southern Railroad crosses Warrick Branch before it crosses the Blackwater River forms the line between those counties. James Harris, Matthew Harris, and Mary Harris, wife of Matthew, witnessed the signing of a deed by their brother, Robert Harris, and Robert’s wife, Ann Harris, on February 28, 1759. This deed conveyed the land in this same area of Southampton County, which Robert and his brother, John Harris, had received as a grant. James married Mary Claiborne. They made their home in the area between Macon and Little Fishing Creek in what is now Warren County, North Carolina. James signed his will on April 10, 1800. The will was probated in November 180-. James gave his son, Claiborne, the upper one-half of his land next to the land of John Egerton. He acknowledged that Claiborne had, with his consent, sold this land to his brother, James. James Harris, in his will, gave the other half of his land to his son, James. At this time, his daughter, Celah, was already married. Evidently, Mary, his wife, had already died. Children of James and Mary Harris: 1. William Claiborne Harris; b. c. 1755. 2. Celah Elizabeth Harris; b. c. 1756. 3. James H. Harris, Jr.; b. c. 1758; d. October, 1817. NOTE: Sarah Myrick Parker (d125/4412/22) was born in Littleton, North Carolina on February 2, 1882. Sarah was a descendant of both James Harris (d125/6) and his brother, Charles Harris (d125/4). She was a great-great-great-granddaughter of both. Sarah was quite active in researching her ancestors in these families as well as other ancestors. Sarah recorded her research. Others have added to that research. Ernest Moore Martin, Jr. (d125/6373/243) of the Catawba area of Virginia added to Sarah’s research and published his book about 1990. His book, very nicely done, gives quite detailed accounts of the descendants of James Harris (d125/6). It is entitled, JAMES HENRY HARRISS, WARREN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, His Ancestors and Descendants. Also, some of this history, described herein, has been published by James. Bennett Boddie in his volumes entitled HISTORICAL FAMILIES OF SOUTHERN UNITED STATES. This is to acknowledge that a great deal of this account is from the history mentioned above. Also, this writer acknowledges the assistance of Percy Alan Harris (d125/6373/52) of Halifax, North Carolina who contributed to this work. The use of the double “s” at the end of the Harris family name appeared to have been in the southeastern United States of America about the middle of the nineteenth century. This was a matter of personal preference. Apparently, James Henry Harriss and his descendants used such spelling as reflected in the publication by Mr. Ernest Martin, Jr. The spelling of the name with the traditional single “s” is used in the publication in order to avoid confusion and questions. My apology to those who use the double “s” spelling. Each family spells their name as they so desire. |

_______________________ d125 MATTHEW HARRIS; b. (c) 1722; d. 1813. 7 Matthew was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The exact date of his birth is uncertain. Matthew’s childhood home was located in the newly formed Southampton County in 1749, when that part of Isle of Wight County located between the Meherrin River and Blackwater River was used to create the new county. Previously, in 1732, that part of Isle of Wight County, which was located west of the Meherrin River, was used to create Brunswick County. Presently four counties, all listed above, replace the original Isle of Wight County. Under the terms of his father’s (Robert Harris) will, probated in 1740, Matthew and his brother, James, were to share equally in the lands that comprised their father’s plantation. Their brother, Michael, was named to execute the will. Evidently, the matter of the land division between Matthew and his brother, James, had not gone so well by 1747. Martin Harris, uncle of Matthew and James, signed his will on February 1, 1747. He gave property to six of his nephews, including Matthew and James. Martin gave his plantation to James in association with the following statement: “It is my desire that James Harris on my giving him my land to make over to his brother, Matthew Harris, his part of the land given him by his father, Robert Harris.” Matthew and his brother, James, conveyed the land from their father, Robert Harris, to Conyers Morris for 60 pounds of Virginia money on November 12, 1767. This was the 540 acres on the south side of the main Blackwater Swamp, beginning at Warwick Branch, which their father had acquired from his brother, Edward Harris, on April 20, 1715. Matthew, along with his brothers, moved southward across the Roanoke River into North Carolina prior to 1750. Matthew married Mary House of Southampton County, Virginia on February 22, 1755 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Apparently, Mary died prior to 1797. Matthew was listed in the Muster Roll of the Militia of Granville County, North Carolina on October 8, 1754. Matthew received a grant of land (number 169) from Lord Granville of England on August 25, 1760. This 250 acres of land was located on Beef Creek, a tributary of Little Fishing Creek. Beef (later Dowtin) Creek crosses Carroll Town Road which connects the Embro-Macon Road with the Embro-Vaughan Road where Beef Creek flows into Little Fishing Creek. Matthew also acquired land in the same area from John Lancaster on October 18, 1782. Matthew conveyed 100 acres of land at Beef Creek to his son, James Harris, for 30 pounds of Virginia money on May 28, 1793. The witnesses were John Lancaster and Morris Harris. Matthew sold 150 acres of his Beef Creek land to John Dowden on December 11, 1803. Morris, son of Matthew, executed this deed as an attorney for his father. At this time, Matthew Harris was living in Greene County, Georgia. Matthew, while living in North Carolina, participated in a number of transaction that are reflected in the public records: he signed an inventory of the estate of the Peter Stevenson in February, 1761; he witnessed a bond on November 14, 1778 and he participated in settling the estate of William Person. Matthew served as a soldier in the American Revolution. Matthew, at about 75 years of age, joined other family members and friends and migrated to Greene County, Georgia in 1797. Matthew’s cousin, Walton Harris (a son of Nathan Harris), had preceded them, prior to the time of the American Revolution, to the same location. Matthew’s sons, Morris and Nelson, along with Nelson’s family, made this trip. Matthew’s cousins, Jordan and Drury Harris (sons of Daniel Harris), also made the trip. Some elements of the Green, Alston, and Long families of Warren County, North Carolina also moved to Greene and Hancock Counties in Georgia. Greene County lies mostly on the east side of the Oconee River. Today, Interstate Highway 20 passes through Greene County about midway between Atlanta and Augusta. When this family moved to Greene County, Georgia in 1797, they were living on the western edge of the white man’s organized society. Although the state of Georgia claimed most of the land westward to the Mississippi River, the land west of the Oconee River was, in fact, occupied and controlled by the Indians. There were no counties west of the Oconee River. There were no other states west of the Oconee River. The Mississippi Territory was created by Congress in 1798. Florida, to the south, remained under Spanish control until it was obtained by the United States after 1819. Matthew acquired the following real estate in Greene County, Georgia: on March 7, 1797 he acquired 287 acres of land on Shoulderbone Creek; on September 18, 1797 he acquired an additional 200 acres. Matthew’s home on Shoulderbone Creek was located in the southern part of the county, south of today’s Highway I-20. A history of Greene County lists Matthew Harris as a veteran of the American Revolution who is buried in Greene County. That grave has not been located by the writer. Matthew signed his will on December 12, 1810. The will was probated on November 1, 1813. Matthew was about 91 years of age when he died. Matthew gave his plantation to his son, Morris. Children of Mary and Matthew Harris: 1. Nelson Harris; b. (c) 1756; d. May 9, 1820. 2. James Harris; b. (c) 1758. 3. Morris Harris; b. 1765; d. 1851. 4. Christeanna Harris; b. (c) 1769. She was listed as Christeanna Hills in the will. 5. Polly Harris; b. (c) 1771. She was listed as Polly Pyron in the will. NOTE: One Harris family historian, Mrs. Sarah Myrick Parker (d125/4412/22) of Littleton, North Carolina, suggested that Matthew Harris married Mary Morris, the daughter of John and Mary Morris of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. This suggestion is evidently based on the information contained in the will of John Morris, which was probated on December 3, 1772 in Isle of Wight County. John Morris, in his will, mentioned his son, Conyers Morris, and his daughter, Mary Harris. This information was furnished to the writer by Percy Harris (d125/6373/52) of Halifax, North Carolina. No marriage record has been found to support this marriage. Records do show that Matthew and his brother, James Harris, conveyed the land they inherited from their father, Robert Harris, to Conyers Morris in 1767. Matthew’s will, signed in 1810, favored his son, Morris, and his daughter, Polly (Mary) Harris Pyron. This may indicate that these were his two youngest children. The writer cannot rule out or in the possibility that Matthew’s two youngest children were of Mary Morris. The answer to this question may be found in the history of the Pyron family—in Georgia or Tennessee. |

This exhibit utilizes a portion of a map of Hancock County which was produced by the Georgia Department of Transportation. A. The Shoulderbone community is designated by the letter “A”. There was an abundance of water for farming in this area with the Oconee River, shown on the left, and with Shoulderbone Creek and its tributaries draining a major part of the central and western areas of Hancock County, as well as a large area in the southern part of Greene County. Matthew Harris (d125/7) died in 1813 in Greene County while living on the waters of Shoulderbone Creek. Matthew’s son, Nelson Harris, and Nelson’s first wife, Nancy Long, lived and died in the Shoulderbone community. The History of Greene County by Dr. Thaddeus Brocker Rice and Carolyn White Williams lists Matthew Harris and N. Harris as being among the soldiers of the American Revolution who are buried in Greene County. Matthew’s son, Morris Harris, at this time, was living on Harris Creek in the northwestern area of Greene County. Morris died near Jonesboro, Georgia. Guilford Harris (1793-1864) (d125/711), son of Nancy Long and Nelson Harris, and his wife, Mariah Clarke, were in the Shoulderbone Community in April of 1824. They later lived and died at Jonesboro, Georgia. Mariah Clarke was born in the Shoulderbone community. She was the daughter of Rebecca Sledge and Robert Clarke. Rebecca and Robert were born in Halifax County, North Carolina, lived in the Shoulderbone community, and died at Huntsville, Alabama. Rebecca Sledge was a member of a large Sledge family which lived in the Shoulderbone community, headed by her parents, Amy and John Sledge, Jr.. Robert Clarke, a soldier in the American Revolution, was the son of Robert and Rachel Clarke of Virginia and North Carolina. Other children of Robert and Rachel Clarke who also lived in the Shoulderbone community included Cornelius Clarke (who married Amy Whitfield Sledge, a sister of Rebecca), William Clarke, Jane Clarke Blackwood and her husband, Francis Blackwood. Collin Sledge, a son of Amy and John Sledge, Jr., married Zelpha Harris, a daughter of Nancy Long and Nelson Harris, in 1808 in the Shoulderbone community. Among the other families who lived in the Shoulderbone community were three other Harris families who will be listed here. The family of Absalom Harris (d124/222) of Southampton County, Virginia arrived in the Shoulderbone community about 1786. Absalom (1752-1824) was related to the Matthew Harris family described above. This family is described elsewhere in this history. Henry Harris (1781-1858), the son of Elizabeth and Absalom Harris, mentioned in the preceding paragraph, married Mary Elizabeth Harris, b. 1792, in the Shoulderbone community. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Nancy Evans and Samuel Harris who also lived in the Shoulderbone community. Samuel Harris (1750-1828) was a soldier in the American Revolution. Samuel’s father, Arthur Harris (1730-1800) of Maryland, was also a soldier in the American Revolution. Samuel brought his family to Shoulderbone after the Revolution. Samuel’s son, Peterson Harris, b. 1785, most probably, constructed the Old Harris Mill on Shoulderbone Creek, which is pictured on the following page. This impressive and historic structure in Hancock County was built about 1820. A few years ago, in 1982, it was still grinding corn to produce meal. This old mill is, to the writer, an exciting thing to see, a relic of many generations ago. The letter “B” on the map on the preceding page is the place of burial of Samuel Harris (1750-1828). The writer visited this gravesite several years ago. The letter “C” on the map is the location of the Old Harris Mill. The fourth Harris family with representation in the Shoulderbone community in this same period of time was descendants of Martha Laird and Samuel Harris, who died in Greene County in 1789. This family had arrived in Philadelphia during the Scot-Irish immigrations. Their ancestors had lived, for many generations, in Scotland. The history of this American Harris family has been written and published by several, including Isaac L. Harris. |
