Hartwell Hodges Davis-Williams |

Hartwell, popularly
known as Harty, Hodges Davis, born April 27, 1793, was the daughter
of Archibald Davis, born April 4, 1766, died February 22, 1821 in
Franklin County, North Carolina and Elizabeth Jane Hilliard, born
1769 and died August 25, 1816, who were married in 1789. She grew up
in Halifax and later Franklin County, where the Davis family raised
a big family on their large plantation, with Harty being the 3rd of
12 children born to the couple. In October 1812, Harty married the
son of Maj. Williams Williams and Elizabeth Kearney of Warren
County, Robert Webb Williams, who was born February 27, 1792, died
November 15, 1822. The early death of Robert left Harty a young
widow with five children to raise on her own: Eliza (married James
Yarborough), Ruina (married Tom Alston), Robert Edgar (married
Valeria Virginia Kearney), Archibald Davis (married Lucy Lewis) and
Martha Williams (married Benjamin T. Ballard). In later years, the
youngest son, Archibald, inherited the family plantation in Franklin
County, Vine Hill, while his brother, Robert Edgar, became a well
respected physician in Warren County who built Myrtle Lawn
Plantation. Although her tombstone reads that she died in 1870, her
will and probate shows Harty Hodges Davis Williams died in 1868
Warren County. (Thanks to Kathleen Harkey, 3rd great-granddaughter of Harty Hodges Davis-Williams for contributing the photo which has been in her family for generations. Written by Deloris Williams) |
