TUCKER

  • John Tucker (spelled variously, Tougart, Tourcart) came to England with William the Conqueror, and fought at Hastings 1066. He was granted Armes by same 1079, and was given an Estate, in South Tavistock, Co Devon, and married relict of Trecareth, who is thought to be the former incumbent of said Estate. His son Stephen was granted permission 1150, to wear his hat in the Kings presence, & also an Estate of Samerton, near Travitock, in Pembroke Co, Wales, which the Tuckers have held for over 400 years (the Sealyham property) and have used the same coat of Arms.
  • George Tucker, m Maria Hunter of Gaunnte, was a man of note in Milton, next Gravesend, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, who conveyed to him the “Manor” 1572. He was appointed Jurat July 22, 1562, by said Queen, & Henry Tucker of Bermuda, was Jurat 1639, & Mayor of Gravesend & Milton 1637. They were brothers, and soon after this disappeared from England, and the tradition is generally accepted they they emigrated to America.
  • Daniel Tucker was a subject in the Colony, at Jamestown 1609. (Brown Gen to America.)
  • Capt William Tucker was among the living “Att Elizabeth Cittye” Feb 16, 1623. He received a grt of 650a “on East side of the main River, agst Elizabeth Cittie,” and 150a at Newport News, 1626, in the Corporation of Henrico. (Land Office, Richmond Va.) He was deputized to go against the rebellious Nansemond & Warrasquicke Indians 1623/4, and served as Burgess from said Co, 1624. John Tucker had a grant for land, Oct 28, 1697, 65a on N. E. side of Western Branch, Nansemond Co, and was living in Lower Norfolk Co Va, Oct 5, 1683, at which time he made a deed unto Capt Wm Robinson, 200a of land which sd Robinson bequeathed in his will, Mar 5, 1695, to Wm Thorogood of Princess Anne Co, who sold sd land to Col Edward Moseley, of same Co, & he in like manner sold land to Nath’l Tatum of Norfolk Co, Nov 26, 1715, “land on Elizabeth River, at the head of Western Branch, of Indian Creek.” The Tuckers settled at a place called “Tucker Town.”
  • Robert Tucker of Weymouth, about 1635 emigrated to Milton Mass, 1662, m Elizabeth Allen, b 1604, d 1682, son Monrasch Tucker, m Waitstill Sumner, b 1654, d 1743, issue Samuel, m Rebecca Leeds, b Milton Mass 1687, d 1758, had son Samuel, m Elizabeth Haywood, b 1719, d 1776, who had son Nathaniel, b 1769.
  • Mr Robert Tucker of Lower Norfolk Co Va dec’d, Mar 1723. Frances Tucker Admix. “Merchandise belonging to sd Tucker, West India goods, in ye Stores, & Come now in ye Brigantine ‘Providence’ valued at £450-9-9, in the hands of Mrs Frances Tucker.” Three children of sd Tucker, not named.
  • William Tucker of Norfolk Co, with consent of wife Elinor sold to Richard Tucker his plan’ on Deep Creek, “as by a deed from — Browne” Nov 13, 1703.
  • John Tucker, of the Borough of Norfolk, will p Sept 17, 1762. Son: “Henry, negroes, & blacksmith Tools, & £300 in Cash, including money belonging to him from Mr Gristocks Estate, and the Sloop Rebecca, dau Frances Calvert, negroes, & £100 Cash, Son Travis house, & Lott where I now live, son Jno. the land & houses, that was the Glebe, dau Jane £200 Cash, dau Rebecca, & Elizabeth, £100 Cash each, wife Rebecca. My brig ‘Three Brothers’ to be sold, & money put to Interest, with good security, to be applied to the bringing up & Schooling of my four youngest children, Elizabeth, Travis, Jane, & Jno Tucker. My Sloop Hannah to be hired to the County, & money applied as before.” (Norfolk County Records.)
  • John Hutchings Jr, Christopher Perkins, Edward C. Travis, & Henry Tucker Exrs.
  • Walter Tucker of Lynn Regis, Dorsett, Mer’cht, Power of Att’ to Mr Samuel Tucker of Bristol, to recover Estate of his “cozen John Edwards in Va.” Sept 24, 1664. (Isle of Wight Records.) (Samuel Tucker same date, of Ratcliff.) (Isle of Wight Co Va.)

  • Nathaniel Tucker, made his will in Onslow Co N. C. Jan 7, 1750, and names brother Henry Tucker.
  • John Tucker was living in Perq Precinct 1701.

  • Nixon, Zachariah, took up 323a of land in Pasquotank Co, 1684 on N.   • John Godfrey in Norfolk Co Va, conveyed “2 black sows, and one Colt” unto Richard Conquest, for 1216 lbs of Tob,” Jan 25, 1646. Matthew Godfrey with consent of wife Dinah, deeded land in Norfolk Co, June 18, 1724, naming his father John Godfrey, & brothers Jonathan, & William. Evan Jones who was granted land, 200a in Princess Anne Co Va, on North west side of Great Cypress Swamp, running into Symons Creek, of North River, Oct 20, 1687, assigned said land (with Consent of wife Dinah) unto Matthew Godfrey of Norfolk Co, Dec 15, 1703. Test’ John, and Elizabeth Godfrey. Matthew Godfrey, with Consent of wife Isabella, sold unto John Godfrey (s of Warren) parcel of land purchased of Mr. Evan Jones, on Great Cypress Swamp. June 15, 17¾. Isabella Godfrey appointed her brother George Burges her Att’. June 15, 17¾.

  • Godfrey, (3) Joseph, m Mary Hosea, Aug 14, 1786.
  • Godfrey (3) Tulle, m Mary Pointer, Oct 16, 1786.
  • Excursus: Hecklefield. (1) Capt. John Hecklefield (son of John) was an Englishman who came to Perq about 1701. He appeared for the first time in Court held “at ye Gran Court House” Oct 14, 1701. The same year he was made Capt of Malitia in Perq Precinct. Court was held at his “House in Little River” Mar 29, 1703, & Oct 26 same year. The Assembly met there Oct 11, 1708, with 26 members in attendance. Mr. Edward Moseley chosen Speaker, William Glover presided as “President.”
  • John Hecklefield m Elizabeth Abingdon (d of Thomas of Pasq Co) & had one son John, who died before Nov 8, 1729. d. s. p. when the name became extinct in Perq. Capt John Hecklefield’s land lay around “Little River” a small village, the earliest settlement in the county. He was Dec’d Aug 8, 1721. “Elizabeth Hecklefield Dower Lands,” adj Wm Godfrey. He had other land that adj Capt George Clerke, now in the tenure of Abraham Warren, & Mary Evans, widow of said George. Nov 9, 1709. Joseph Godfrey made a deed April 21, 1729, to Ezekiel Maudlin, 150a on So W. Side of Little River, by a small Creek, issuing out of sd River, called “Hacklefields land.” Col. John Hecklefield was dead Nov 8, 1729. His land adj William Evans which the latter sold to Col Richard Sanderson. (225a.) John (1) will p in Chowan Co Aug 8, 1721, only one son John is named. The Inventory of this son can be found in the Deeds of Perq, and is a very interesting document.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. The 10th. Day of Aprell, in ye year of our Lord, one Thousan, Seven hundred & Twenty nine. I, Thomas Harvey, of ye precinck of perquimens & Province of North Carolina, Gent., Being of perfickt mind & memory, Thanks be to Allmitey God. Thare fore, Calling unto Mind ye Mortality of my Body & knowing yt it is apointed once for all men to Dye, do make & ordain this my last Will & Testement, yt is To Say, Principally & ferst of all, I Recomend my Soul into ye hands of God yt Gave it; & my Body I Recomend to ye Earth to be buread in a Decent & Cristeon maner, at ye Descration of my Exetors. Hareafter named, nothing Doubting but Genarll. Resuration, I shall Receive ye Same aGain by ye Power of Allmitey God; and as Touching Such Worldly Estate wherewith it bath pleased God to bless me with in ys. Life, I Give & Demise & Dispose of ye Same in ye following maner & Forme:

Item. I Give To Each of Collo. Robad Wests Dafters, which he had by my Sester, Marey Harvey, Namely: Mathe, Sarey & Marcy, one Gold Ring, To Each of them, to ye valey of fortey Shillings Each. And likewise Give to my two Sisters, Elizabeth Clayten, and Penelopy Lettell, Wife of Mr. Willm. Lettell one Gold Ring apes, or fifty Shillings each.

Item. I Give to The Children, or so many of them as is now Living, Belonging to ye Wife of James Settersen, & ye Wife of Willm. Tetterten, fortey Shillings a pese, or to ye Valey of ye Said Money in what my Exceters. hareafter named Shall Tink fitt.

Item. I Give to John Cole, Soun of John Coles, of Nances- mun in Virieny, one tree year old Hores.

Item. I Give to Josway Wherey, Soun of Antoney Wherey, one Bed and Furneture, To ye Valey of Tenn pounds.

I Give one Hundred Pounds, Current Money of North Carolina, To be Emplid & Lade oute for ye youse & benefett of ye pore & pore Children beloing to ye precinck of Perquimons, Such as are Mentanead by ye paresh Excepted out. But ye money to be Ametadatly Layd out at ye Descretion of my Excetr. hareafter namead, but to ye youse aforesaid.

Item. I Give To Mr. Willm. Lettell of North Carolina, & my Friend, Collo. Edward Moseley, & my Friend, Mr. Thos. Pollock, & To Each of Them, one Gold Ring a pesese to ye Valey of Ten pounds, Currant Money of North Carolina, Each Ring to be purched out of my Estate by my Excetrs. hareafter named.

Item. I Give all ye Rest & Residue of my Estate, Both Reall and Persnall, be it in North Carolina or Eleswhere, be it in wot kind or maner SoEver, To my foure Sounes, namely; Thomas Harvey, John Harvey, Bejn. Harvey, & Miles Harvey, To be Equally Sheard & Devided betwene them & To them & thare ares for Ever. And If Either or Eney of Them shall Diye before thay ARive to ye age of Twenty one Years, that then, & in Such Case, that part of ye Estate as beloingd to ye Desesead, to be Equally Devided among ye Sirvivrs & thare ares for Ever, both rell and persnall. And my will is that the Money ariseing out of my Estate, Either by ye Sale of Good, Hire of Negroes, or by Eney ways or menes wot Ever, To be Emplid in Trade or Lett To Entrest for ye Benefett of my Children after an alownces for thare Edecation.

And Lastly, I do aPint my Brother, Miles Gale, of Boston in Newengland, my Knnsman, Mr. Willm. Lettell, My Friend, Collo. Edward Mosley, Mr. Thos. Pollock, Excters. & my Loving Wife, Elizabeth Harvey, Excetres, of this my Last Will & Testement, To Se it Strickely fullfilld in all its parts, Revocking & disallowing all other will or wills by me mayd, Ratefying & confirming This To be my Last Will & Testament.
