He called this land “Broad Neck,” and later it was spoken of as “on Morgans Swamp” and it seems evident that it was situated on the south side of Vosses Creek, where sd Toms land was located, and the Swamp here mentioned, is probably the one just above what is now called Brights Mill, between Winfall, & Brights Creek. MAYO

  • Edward Mayo Sr was a resident of Perq Precinct 1684. He is found proving right for himself, son Edward Jr, and dau’s Sarah, Ann, & Elizabeth Mayo, John Nixon, Em Nixon, and Anne Nixon (their daughter) and three negroes. (Col Rec Vol I.) On Nov 6, of same year he officiated as Att’ in Perq, and May 1693 was appointed “Clarke of this Court.” The records in Perq, neither Quaker, or secular, throw any light on his former dwelling place. He held office as Clerk, in Perq for several years.
  • Mayo, Edward (2) m Mary Clare d of Timothy, & Mary (Bundy) b Feb 21, 1686 (twin sister of Elizabeth, who m Thomas (1) Winslow) issue: 1 Edward (3) b 7, 2mo 1703—2 John, b 27, 11mo 1705/6—3 Mary, b 26, 12mo 1709/10—4 Ann, b 23, 1mo 1713—5 Joseph, b —6 Elizabeth, b 21, 8mo 1717—7 Sarah, b 19, 12mo 1719.

  • Mayo, Edward (3) Edward (2) Edward (1) m Mary Jessop (d of Joseph) issue: 1 Mary, b 21, 1mo 1727/8—2 Edward (4), b 19, 12mo 1730. As Edward Mayo (s of Edward & Mary Jessop) is not named in either his fathers will, or his gr-father Jessops, we may suppose he had passed away.
  • Mayo, Mary Newby (dau of Timothy Clare, once wife of Edward Mayo) died 27, 10mo 1739. (Quaker records.)

Her will Perq Co, p Jan 1739, Son Joseph Mayo, dau Elizabeth Wilson, son-in-law John Wilson, gr-children: John Wilson, Edward, Jemima, & Isabel Newby niece Elizabeth Winslow (dau of Thomas, & Elizabeth).

  • Mayo, Joseph, m Elizabeth Newby, (d of his step-father Joseph Newby) before 1766, and shortly after this date, they disappear from Perquimans Co. They probably moved with the Quaker emigration, west.

LAMB

  • Joshua Lamb in an affidavit made in Perq, asserted that he was “of Mass Bay, in New England.” Sir William Berkeley granted to Joshua Lamb of New England “the whole Island of Roanoke” April 17, 1676. Test’ James Bray, Darby Maguire, John Culpepper. In this grant he is called “merchant.” Joshua Lamb of Roxbury, Co of Suffolk, in New England, Merchant; sold said Island for £150 unto Nicholas Paige, of Boston, same county, Merchant. Sept 29, 1679. Mary Lamb widow of Joshua, returned to Roxbury, where she signed some papers 1690, and calls herself of said town. As Joshua Lamb made no will, so far as the records of Perq make manifest no direct line can be traced from him, but it seems probable that the next to make his entry into the county, may have been his son, or gr-son.
  • Lamb, William, (next to appear) made his will in Perq, probated April 1758, naming wife Miriam, and dau’s: Elizabeth, Miriam, & Mary. Ex William Newby (bro-in-law). As he named no sons, we are at sea again, as to descent, but he may have “set off” his sons before this date, to use an old Quaker phrase, in use at that day. William Lamb m Miriam Newby 2, 11mo 1751.
  • Isaac Lamb, (s of Henry) m Elizabeth Nixon (d of Phineas) 18, 2mo 1756. As these two appear to be contemporaries, they were probably brothers. Henry Lambs name appears on Tithe List of James Sitterson J. P. 1744. On List of Masters, & mistresses, between Cypress Bridge, & Skinners Bridge, are found the names of Henry & Thomas Lamb (no date). As Henry Lamb made no will it is not possible to find descent from him, although he surely had children, as shown by his son Isaac.
  • Lamb, Joseph, (Thought to be son of Isaac) m Lovey Smith, 1, 11mo 1794. His will p in Perq, Nov 1803, names sons: Nixon, & Stanton, brother John Lamb, bro-in-law Hosea Smith, dau’s: Mary Sarah, & Nancy Lamb.
  • Lamb, Zachariah, m Miriam Griffin, 1, 2mo 1785. He also made his will in Perq, p May 1804. Sons: William, & Chalkey, dau’s: Mary, & Betsy, wife Miriam.
  • Lamb, Phineas, m Dorothy — & had issue according to his will, p in Perq Feb 1809. Sons: Thomas, Jacob, Josiah, & Isaac, dau’s: Lydia, Rebecca, & Elizabeth Lamb, dau Miriam Griffin.
  • Lamb, Restore, m Millicent Winslow (d of Jacob, & Elizabeth). His will p in Perq, May 1823, names wife Millicent, sons: Stephen, & Caleb, dau’s: Sarah Perry, & Mary Lamb, son Jacob, gr-son Thomas Hunter, dau Elizabeth Hunter, dau Kezia Willson, & Gulielma Lamb, son-in-law Sam’l Willson.

JONES

  • As everyone knows there are Jones, and then Jones. While it is extremely difficult to decide with absolute certainty the descent of any line of this numerous family, and one is often very much confused by their many Johns, & Peters, yet we can with good grace give the various Peters in Perq with well founded authority. They are well defined on the records, but no mention is made of the place from which they came.
  • Jones, Peter (1) died in Perq Aug 4, 1679. As he made no will, nothing further can be found. It seems reasonable to suppose that the next by that name was his son. Also it seems probable that there was some connection by marriage, or otherwise, between the Jones’ family, & Robert Beasley, where said Peter Jones was buried. He was probably one of the Peter Jones descended from Abraham Jones, of Va, but there is no positive proof of this fact.
  • (2) Jones, Peter (2) Peter (1), m Elizabeth —. Issue: 1 Rebecca b Mar 14, 1694—2 William, b Sept 28, 1697—3 Peter, b May 7, 1700, Peter Jones, m 2d Mary Overman, issue: Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah, John, Hannah, & Mary.
  • His will p in Perq, April 1752, names children: John, to whom he bequeathed “plantation whereon I now live” & land at “Mile Branch.” To son William he left 170a, son Peter “plantation whereon I now live” dau’s: Mary, Hannah, & Margaret Jones, Sarah Sutton, Rebecca Denman, gr-son Thomas Sherwood, Exrs son John, & dau Mary.
  • The division of Mary Jones estate (d of Peter) Jan 1, 1758, makes plain the fact that he had two wives. Heirs of Mary Jones dec’d:
  • Rebecca Denman, “sister of the half blood.”
  • William Jones, “brother of the half blood.”
  • Peter Jones, “brother of the half blood.”
  • Elizabeth Sherwood, “sister of the whole blood.”
  • Margaret Henby, “sister of the whole blood.”
  • Sarah Sutton, “sister of the whole blood.”
  • Hannah Hinds, “sister of the whole blood.”
  • John Jones, “brother of the whole blood.”
  • By this division the marriages of the daughters are disclosed.
  • (3) Jones, Peter (3) Peter (2) Peter (1), m Mary Pierce (d of Thomas) (See Pierce) issue: son—b Aug 24, 1723—2 Peter, b Mch 27, 1726—3 Mary, b June 24, 1727—4 Isaac, b Mch 29, 1733—5 Thomas, b Jan 14, 1735—6 Zachariah, b Nov 25, 1740—7 Mahachy, b Oct 1, 1745. (The 1st son probably Zephaniah named in will.)
  • (2) Jones, William (1) Peter (1), m Priscilla Toms (d of Francis Jr, & Margaret Boge) issue: William, b Apl 27, 1732, d Mch 20, 1753, age 19 years. He was living when his father made his will, p in Perq, April 1752, naming, son William, dau Elizabeth Barber, & Rebeckah Jones, Exrs: Peter Jones (brother) & Moses Barber (son-in-law). As this son died the following year in young manhood, it seems probable that he died unmarried, therefore we are led to believe that William Jones had no male descendants in Perq.
  • Jones, Peter (3) will Perq p April 1753. Sons: Thomas, Zephaniah, Zachariah, Malachy (land on Mile Branch) dau Mary, wife Mary, gr-son Joseph Jones. Peter Jones Estate was divided Aug 1, 1758, among the several heirs; James Elliott received £81-11-9 “in Right of his wife Mary,” Zephaniah, & Malachi Jones same.
  • The division of Mary Jones Estate, July 1758, a “part to Joseph Jordan, in right of his ward Joseph Jones,” other heirs: Thomas Jones, James Elliott “in right of his wife” Zephaniah Jones, Malachi, & Zachariah Jones, each a part. In this division Thomas Jones is said to be the “eldest son of Mary Jones, who died intestate” April 18, 1758.
  • Thomas Jones m Sarah—issue Elizabeth, b Dec 26, 1730.
  • Mary Jones, (d of Peter, & wife Anne) b Aug 17, 1754.
  • Ann Jones (d of Mary Beesley, widow) m Peter Albertson, Aug 27, 1701.

  • Jones, Joshua, m Pleasant Hasket (d of John) “at Suttons Creek” 13, 7mo 1806. He died without issue, will 1814, wife Pleasant, brother Charles, Pleasant (Hasket) Jones m 2d—Jordan. (See her fathers will, p 1818.)
  • Jones, Joseph, will p in Perq, May 1819. Son Joseph H. Jones, dau’s: Mary Jones, & Margaret Trueblood, sons: Joshua, & Charles Exrs.
  • Jones, Joseph (2) Joseph (1) m Mary—issue: 1 Joseph (3), b 22, 11mo 1803—2 Huldah Bundy Jones, b 1, 2mo 1811. Mary Jones died 14, 10mo 1813.

  • Jones, William, will p in Perq, Aug 1794, Wife Ann, dau’s: Sarah, Mary, & Margaret, sons: Josiah & Thomas. He lies buried at the Jones farm across “Jones Bottom” near Hertford.
  • Jones, Miriam (parents not named) m Thomas Nixon (both of Perq) 13, 10 mo 1806.
  • Jones, Thomas, m Margaret Toms, 5, 4mo 1775. (Welleses).
  • Jones, William, m Mary Gilbert, 3, 6mo 1737.

  • Thomas Jones, will p in Perq, April 1788. Sons: Thomas, William, Zachariah, daus Mary Newby, & Sarah Jones, wife Margaret (nee Toms).  –This Thomas Jones was evidently the father of William, of Jones Farm across “Jones Bottom” whose will was p Aug 1794, he being son of Peter (3) and Mary Pierce.

ELLIOTT

  • John Elliott, son of Bennett of Nasing Essex England, bapt 1604, arrived in America 1631, and settled in New England.
  • Jacob Elliott, brother of Rev John Elliott the Apostle, who died before 28, 2mo 1651, at which time his will was p in New Eng. He made bequest to son Jacob a “House” and to dau Hannah the same. His Inventory shows wife Margery, and that he had in money £579-23-8, 29, 11mo 1651.     He was granted land in Gloucester Co Va, 110a, 1672, and appears as a tithable in Surry Co (Sunken Marsh) June 8, 1681. He was probably a brother of Thomas, of Perq Co. John Elliott came to Va as a headright of Richard Jordan of Surry Co Va, Oct 20, 1689. (Surry Co     Rec.) Also thought to be brother of said Thomas.

  • Thomas Elliott (s of Joseph who d 1697) emigrated to Va, with brothers William, & John, date not given. He acquired large landed Est in Carolina, and served in the Assembly 1696. • Elliott, (I) Thomas, m 1 Sarah, issue Lydde, b 6, 12mo 1718. This could not have been his first child, as William his son was m to Elizabeth Relph Dec 2, 1690, or this may probably be his brother William who came to America with Francis Yardley. William Elliott had a son Pritlow who was m in 1744, a long period of time between marriages, but he may have married late in life, or been born ten or fifteen years after this date. There is no certain proof of either point.
