Samuel Charles 

12 March 1727/28,

Perquimans County

In the name of god amen the twelth day of March 1727/28 I Samuel Charles of poquimons being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to  god therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye to make and ordain this my last will and Testament  that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the Hands of god that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in in Decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executor nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection that I shall receive  the same again by the mighty power of god and as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased god to bless me. I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. Item  I give to my wife half my plantation where I now live during her widowhood if she sould marry she is to have but her thirds.

IMPRIMIS I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Charles the plantation and land whereon I now live to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body for ever. If he should dye without such heirs then to falls to his brother John Charles and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body  for ever.

Item I give to my son John Charles a tract of land out back betwix the head of the lower gum swamp and the head of the bull branch to him and his heirs forever.

Item  I give to my son Josuay Charles a small tract of land on the north east side of the lower swamp to him and his heirs for ever.

Item I give to Sarah Maudlin one young cow.

Item I give to my Grand Daughter Eliz” Overman one two year old heifer.

Item I give to my Daughter Lidey Charles one young cow and calf.

Item I give all the rest of my cattle be equally divided betwix my wife and my Daughter Sarah Charles and my son Josuay Charles and my Daughter Hannah Charles.

Item I give to my daughter Mary Overman two ews and lambs .

Item I give all the rest of my sheep to be equally divided betwix my wife and other children.

Item I give my wife the use of the feather bed and furniture that I now lie in for her natural life and after her death to my Daughter Hannah.

Item I give all my hogs to my wife for to pay what debts I owe and to bring up my small children.

Item I give to my two sons Samuel and John my two guns each of them one.

Item I give the labor of my Negro woman to my wife during her widowhood for the maintainment of my small children after her deceas or marriage then the Negro woman to work one year with my son Josuay Charles and one year with my Daughter Hannah during the Negroes life.

Item I give to my son John Charles one feather bed with an osenbrigs tick 

Item I give to my wife my white horse called Smoker 

Item I give to my son Samuel my greate table and form

Item I give all the rest of my household goods that is not already given to equally divided betwix my wife and children.

Item I give to my son Josuay Charles one young two year old horse.

Item I give to my Daughter Lidey one yearling mare.

Item I give to my daughter Mary Overman one bay mare 

Item I give one gray mare and her increase betwix my two daughters Sarah Charles and Hannah Charles

Item I leave my great horse called Caper for the use of the plantation and if he proves unluckey then my Executors has power to swap or sell him for money to buy another

Item I likewise constitute make  and ordain my two sons Samuel Charles and John Charles of this my Last Will and  Testament and I do hereby utterly disannul all other wills that have here to fore been by me made. In witness my hand this day and the year above written–

This company, known as the “Perquimans  Beauregards” was raised in Perquimans County and enlisted at Hertford in Perquimans County. The company was composed initially of both infantry and cavalry contingents but was soon converted to a standard infantry organization. The company was mustered in on May 16, 1861; it remained in camp in Perquimans County until ordered to New Bern on July 3. On July 19 the company departed on board the steamer Curlew and traveled to New bern via the Perquimans River, Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, and the Neuse River. Upon its arrival the company was assigned to a battalion which later became the 27th Regiment, N. C. Troops (Infantry) and the Perquimans Beauregards became Company F of that unit. After joining the regiment, the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.

CAPTAINS 

NIXON, WILLIAM – Enlisted in Perquimans County. Elected Captain on or about May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until he was defeated for reelectionwhen the regiment was reorganized in April, 1862

JONES, THOMAS D. – Was by occupation a clerk prior to enlisting in Perquimans County. Elected 3rd Lieutenant on May 16, 1861, and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on August 20, 1861. Elected Captain on April 22, 1862. Wounded in the abdomen and kidney at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia where he died on November 7, 1863 of wounds.

SKINNER, BENJAMIN S. – Resided in Perquimans County where he enlisted on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on April 22, 1862. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Promotes to 1st Lieutenant on November 15, 1862, and was promoted to Captain on November 8, 1863. Killed at Reams’ Station, Virginia, August 25, 1864

MARTIN, THOMAS DUNCAN, 1st Lieutenant – Born in Pasquotank County where he resided as a doctor prior to enlisting in Perquimans County at age 46. Elected 1st Lieutenant on or about May 16, 1861. Detailed in hospital in New Bern on or about July 1, 1862. Reported absent on detail at New Bern until transferred to a hospital at Greensboro on or about February 15, 1862. defeated for reelection on or about April 22, 1862.

MEBANE, WILLIAM A.,  2nd Lieutenant – Resided in Perquimans County where he enlisted on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was elected 3rd Lieutenant on April 22, 1862. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duto on an unspecified date. Captures at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capital Prison, Washington, D.C. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on October 16, 1863, while a prisoner of war. Transferred from Old Capital Prison to Johnson’s Island, Ohio, November 11, 1863. Released on June 12, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Records   of the Federal Provost Marshall dated 1865 gave his age as 32.

NIXON, FRANCIS, 3rd Lieutenant – Resided in Perquimans County where he enlisted on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant. Captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862. Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Exchanged on an unspecified date. Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant on May 1, 1862, and was elected 3rd Lieutenant on November 28, 1862. Wounded in the right leg at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. reported absent wounded until October 5, 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps.

RIDDICK, ELBERT T., 1st Lieutenant – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant and was elected 3rd Lieutenant on November 15, 1861. Elected 1st Lieutenant on April 22, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Died on November 16, 1862, of wounds. Place of death not reported.

WHITE, JOSHUA W., 2nd Lieutenant – Enlisted in Perquimans County. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant to rank from May 16, 1861. Appointed Assistant Quartermaster on or about September 5, 1861, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

WILSON, WILLIAM A., 3rd Lieutenant – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Mustered in asa Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant on November 15, 1861. Elected 3rd Lieutenant on September 1, 1864. Present or accounted for through December 1864. [Paroled at Greensboro, May 1, 1865]

Present or accounted for until wounded in the left ankle and captured at Sharpsburg, Marylany, September 17, 1862. Hospitalized at Frederick, Maryland. BILLUPS, ROBERT L., Private – Resided in Perquimans County where he enlisted on May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the side and captured at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. Hospitalized at Frederick, Maryland. Paroled and transferred to Aiken’s Landing, James River, Virginia where he was received October 22, 1862  for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken’s Landing November 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland October 27, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout and transferred to Cox’s Wharf, James River, Virginia where he was received October 15, 1864 for exchange. Company records do not indicate whether he returned; however, he was paroled in “eastern Virginia” on April 30, 1865.

BOYCE, JOHN A., Private – Enlisted in Perquimans County on July 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862. Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Paroled and transferred to Aiken’s Landing, James River, Virginia where he was received on July 12, 1862. Declared exchanged at Aiken’s Landing on August 5, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at Bristoe Station, Virginia October 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland October 27, 1863. Arrived at Point Lookout on October October 28, 1863.  Paroled at Point Lookout and transferred to Aiken’s Landing on February 24, 1865 for exchange. No further records.

BOYCE, WILLIAM, Private – Born in Perquimans County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on July 16, 1862 by reason of being overage. Discharge certificate gives his age as 35.

BRASWELL, CHURCHWELL, Private – Enlisted in Wake County on May 30, 1864 for the war. Present or accounted for through December, 1864.

BUNDY, JESSE, Private – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded at Wilderness, Virginia on or about May 5, 1864. BURGESS, JOSEPH J., Private – Born in Currituck County and was by occupation an artist prior to enlisting in perquimans County on May 16, 1861. present or accounted for until discharged on April 28, 1862 by reason of “left inguinal hernia.” Discharge certificate gives his age as 30. Rejoined the company on an unspecified date (apparently subsequent to December 31, 1864) as a sutler. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

BURNHAM, RICHARD, Private – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died at Goldsboro on April1, 1862. Cause of death not reported.

Present or accounted for until discharged on July 20, 1862 by reason of “pulmonary consumption.” Discharge certificate gives his age as 23.

HOBBS, DAVID R., Sergeant – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the head at Bristowe Station, Virginia on or about October 14, 1863. Returned to duty and was promoted to Sergeant on or about November 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in both thighs at Wilderness, Virginia on May 5, 1864. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864.

HOLLOWELL, JOHN B., Private – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861 for the war. Present or accounted for until captured at Bristoe Station, Virginia on October 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland on October 27, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout and transferred to Aiken’s Landing, James River, Virginia on February 24, 1865 for exchange.

JACKSON, WILLIAM L., Private – Born in Perquimans County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862. Company records do not indicate whether he returned to duty; however, he deserted to the enemy prior to October 20, 1863 when he was received at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Released on October 27, 1863 apparently after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Records of the Provost Marshall dated 1863 give his age as 28.

JONES, WILLIAM F., 1st Sergeant – Born in Perquimans County and was by occupation a draftsman prior to enlisting in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861.Mustered in as 1st Sergeant. Present or accounted for until discharged on February 11, 1862 by reason of “promotion in the navy.” Discharge certificate gives his age as 21.

JORDAN, EDWARD M., Corporal – Enlisted in Perquimans County on May 16, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on July 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company C, 19th Regiment NC Troops (2nd Regiment NC Cavalry), August 12, 1861. Later served as 2nd Lieutenant of that unit.

MISENHEIMER, WILLIAM A., Private – Born in Cabarrus County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Stanley County on March 1, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right knee at Bristoe Station, Vinginia on October 14, 1863. Reported absent wounded or absent on light duty until November-December, 1864 when he rejoined the company. Retired from service on March 21, 1865 by reason of disability from wounds received at Bristoe Station. Retirement papers give his age as 20. Paroled at Albemarle on May 19, 1865.

MOFFAT, DENNIS, Private – Resided in Randolph County where he enlisted on December 3, 1863 for the war. Deserted on December 12, 1863. Returned from desertion on September 20, 1864. Deserted to the enemy on or about October 1, 1864. Confined at Washington, D. C. until released on or about October 10, 1864 after taking the Oath of Allegiance

Thomas White was a subject in the colony at Jamestown, 1609. (Browns Genesis to America.)

James White in Va same date, at same place. Henry White of York Co Va, had a son Henry, who moved to Isle of Wight. From the dates it seems probable that this was the identical Henry White who migrated to Perq Precinct N. C., before 1670. He built the first Quaker Church in Perquimans, thought to be Little River Mo meeting, which was about where Woodville is situated. Just beyond the confines of this village can be seen at the present time an old Quaker burying ground, with small stones such as were in common use at that day among the simple Quakers. Meetings were held at the house of Henry White, 26, 4mo 1690, at which time, James Davis (s of William) and Elizabeth White (d of Henry) of Albemarle, took each other as man and wife. Another Quarterly meeting convened at the house of Henry White, 1, 3mo 1695, when it was “agreed that Robert Wilson, Francis Toms, & Henry White, doe write a letter in behalf of the Meeting, to friends at yearly meeting in London.” At a meeting held at the house of Arnold White, 24, 4mo 1679, there were present: Henry White, Timothy Meade, Francis Toms, Charles Moris, Jonathan Tailer, Arnold White, George Tailer, Mary White, Rebecka Simons, Solomon Pool, & Margaret White. The children of Solomon Pool were registered at this meeting, as follows: Richard, b 2, 3mo 1680—Ane, b 12, 2mo 1682—Mary, b 15, 10mo 1683—Solomon (2) b 23, 4mo 1687.

As Arnold appears in Perq simultaneously with Henry White, the inference may be drawn with some certainty, that they were brothers, but the records do not mention the fact. John and William White also made their entry into Perquimans about the same time, and they may also be brothers.

(No wife is mentioned.) Henry White bought land in Surry Co Va, June 9, 1655 (Surry records). He made an affidavit in Perq Co, 1689, giving his age as 57 years. (Gen’l Court, May 26, 1689.)

John m Margaret Titerton (widow of William, née Hall), Jan 18, 1685. John Waite died Jan 14, 1691. According to his will p in Perq, Apl 4, 1692, he left no heirs. The legatees in said will being wife Margaret, William & Elizabeth Tetterton (Step-children).

She had by first husband Francis & Elizabeth Foster, named in his will—Oct 9, 1687. Diana White m 3 times, 1st Thomas Harris, Clerk of Perq, 2d William Foster, & 3rd Thomas White. Perq Court was held in the house of Thomas Harris, and after his death, 1679, at the house of Diana Harris, Sept 1679, and still later, at the house of Thomas White, presumably the same house each time. Thomas White in his will Mar 11, 1695, names wife Diana, and William Collins, who it is thought m Elizabeth Harris, d of Diana by her 1st husband.

Thomas White Line

  • In Perquimans Co. there seems to have been two separate, & distinct, lines of this family, that of Henry White, and the descendants of Thomas, of Isle of Wight Co Va. Henry White pioneered to N. C. much earlier than the last named. It is thought, but not proven, that Thomas of Isle of Wight, was a descendant of John White, who came to Va, from New England, & took up land in Norfolk Co.
  • Elder John White, b 1596 in Essex Co England, arrived in New England, 1632, settled at Cambridge, Mass. John White (uncle of Peregrine, s of William, & Ann (Fuller) White) came to Norfolk Va, 1679, where he m Mary — & had John Nicholas, b in Norfolk 1689. John White, of the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River, Yeoman—apt’ Anthony Bonford, of Chuckatuck, Nanzimund Co, planter—Att’ to sell unto Paul Luke, of Isle of Wight, Land, Cattle, Household stuff, in sd Co, belonging to his wife Edy Lewellin, d of Thomas, formerly of said Co, for 300 lbs of Tob. From this line sprang Dr White of Suffolk Va, who is a son of Joshua W. White, named in the last will. (See Jordan family, for Rachel Whites Will.)

White, Mourning, spoken of in the Henry White line, as wife of John White, & mother Robert, (who m Rebeccah Albertson,) may have been a d of Joshua (1) & wife Gulielma. The Whites, & Winslows, crossed so many times, it is difficult to distinguish, one from another. Robert (s of John) died 25, 6mo 1830. This seems all the more to be credited, from the fact that Robert, & Rebeccah had a son named Jordan White, b 8, 9mo 1821, died 21, 6mo 1822.

White, Joseph, (s of Joshua, & Rachel (Jordan) White) is mentioned in his will, but his age is not given. From the fact that five years intervened, between the date of Elizabeth, & Joshua Jordans ages, it is probable that he is the one between. Benjamin White also has no birth date, but we know from his fathers will, that he was the youngest child.

SKINNER

As the Skinner family has been well written up in N. C. Historical & Genealogical Register, it will be beyond my power to make a tracing of them which will be fuller, or more adequate. So it is my object only to give some data, not to be found in the above named work, prior to their coming to Perq County. Most of these notes were found in Isle of Wight Co Va, from which in my opinion Richard Skinner emigrated to N. C. A Richard Skinner appears in York Co, at an early date, as “servant of Capt Thomas Thorpe” but there is nothing to prove that he was the same in Isle of Wight, although he may have been identical. Being a “servant” in this case, does not imply an act of servitude, as we are in the habit of applying it. These so called “servants” were often times of a higher station in life than their masters, and were either political prisoners, sent to the Colony for some minor offense against the government, or were merely paying for a passage to this country, by service, for some stated period. And as Thomas Thorpe is mentioned as “Captain” the latter would seem to be the most plausible conclusion, in the case of Richard Skinner of York Co.

Arthur Skinner, was “foreman” of the jury, in Isle of Wight Co Va, April 14, 1664. William Skinner of Bristoll, Eng, Merchant, appears on the Isle of Wight records, as “Att’ for Mary Markes of Barbados, Widow; and appointed Robert Ked of Isle of Wight his Att’ to Recover from Francis England of Blackwater 5500 lbs of Tob, removed by order of Attorney, 1668. Test’ Robert Harris, James Edwards. John Norsworthy of Isle of Wight Co, leased for 14 years, unto Henry Skynner 160a of land in said Co, for the yearly rent of 400 lbs of Tob. Dec 23, 1664. Test’ George Norsworthy, Bryan Knowles.

Mary Skinner of “Runnison” Isle of Wight Co widow: sold to George Cripps of Blackwater, for 6000 lbs of Tob, “a divident of land” on said River 15000a. Test’ Edward Poynter, Thos Smyth, Daniel Palmer. June 7, 1680. She was married to John Collins of Upper pish of Isle of Wight Co, before Sept 7, 1680.

Richard Skinner made a deed in Isle of Wight July 11, 1676, and gave “all my lands to my wife and two daughters.” Unfortunately they are not named. He also mentions his gr-son Skinner Rawlings. Elizabeth (d of said Richard) m Rober Rawlings, of Surry Co Va, who was a mariner, and owned a “Shipp, which was lying att Warrick squick Bay” July 8, 1677. John Dunford gave bond to pay to Lt Richard Skinner, & James Griffin, 30000 lbs of Tob, July 26, 1674, from Estate of Robert Warren dec’d, of Lawnes Creek. Wit’ Wm Edwards, Rog’r Deeke. Roger Rawlings appointed his “father-in-law” Richd. Skinner Att’. Jan 13, 1675.

Mary Skinner made deposition in Surry Co, July 26, 1675, that William Hill, in his will “gave all his property to Wm Edwards.”

The Parish Reg of St Peters Church New Kent Co gives the ages of two of the children of Richard Skinner as follows: Rich’d, son of Rich’d Skinner, was bapt Feby 15, 1690—2 Margaret (d of Richard, & Mary) born Aug 6, 1699.

He was in Perq Co, N. C. 1701, and was granted 400a in Perq precinct, “at the punch bowles” adj Nathan Newby, along Bear Swamp. Dec 29, 1718.

As Mary Skinner was a widow in Isle of Wight Co & m 2d John Collins 1680, we are led to believe the Richard who came to N. C. must have been a son of the Richard, who had dau married to Roger Rawlings. He seems a better bet for our emigrant, and the records show that Richard of Isle of Wight was dead 1680. Richard (1) in Perq, in a deed to his dau Margaret Walston (Walton) makes plain he had a dau by that name, & her age is given in St Peters Reg He certainly had a son Richard (2) who m Sarah Overman, issue: 1 James, b 5, 10mo 1715—2 Samuel, & Richard (twins) b 15, 11mo 1717—Evane, b 15, 1mo 1719—4 Joseph, b 11, 8mo 1722—5 Joshua, b 25, 5mo 1724—6 Jonathan, b 13, 7mo 1726—7 William, b 25, 12mo 1728—8 John, b 21, 11mo 1730/1. Richard Skinner, and wife Mary, were still alive in Perquimans, 1722.

Major F. S. Skinner of Providence, R. I., is at work on a book, lining up this old family, which he intends to publish at a future date.

Richard Skinner had land grants in Perq, 400a as above stated, and 356a on Bear Swamp, Nov 27, 1727. William Skinner was granted 600a, adj Ephrim Hunter, Mar 11, 1740. Evane Skinner granted 381a in Bear Swamp, Sept 7, 1761, & 130a, Mar 5, 1780, same location.

  • Henry Newby was transported to Va in Thomas, & John Jan 6, 1635. William Newby came from London to New England in Mary, & John Mar 24, 1633, age 24. (Hotten.) The records of Nansemond Co Va show that William Newby was a resident of said county 13, 10mo 1684, being at that date a member of “Chuckatuck” Mo Meeting, where he is found as a witness to a marriage, with wife Izabell. As neither of his three sons, had a wife by that name, and the name of Isobel came down in the family for several generations, among his descendants, it seems natural to suppose that this “Izabell” was William Newby’s wife. His sons named on Chuckatuck Reg, were Gabriel, who was the first to migrate to Perquimans, Nathan a Quaker minister about 1707, and Thomas, who is not named on the said Register, but is named in his brother Nathan Newby’s will, in Perq. From the records in Perq, it seems that Thomas remained in Isle of Wight Co Va, where his son (presumably) m Mary Pretlow. (Thomas 2.)

  • Newby, William, as seen died before 1720, and is not named in Gabriel Newby’s will p in Perq, Mar 1, 1735, but his son William received 300a from his gr-father, in equal division with the sons: Joseph, Jesse, & Samuel; Francis is named but no part allotted to him. He had probably had “set off to him” his share of his fathers Estate. No daughters are named in Gabriel Newby’s will, but he had three dau’s: Isabel, b 28, 10mo 1697—2 Mary, b 30, 11mo 1699—3 Miriam, b Dec 2, 1701, and a dau Elizabeth (no age given) who m John Nixon, and died 10, 7mo 1730, when John Nixon m 2d Mary—and 3d Hannah Albertson.   • Gabriel Newby in his will left to son Samuel his “maner plantation,” which was usually given the youngest son, for the better maintenance of the widow, and mother, the younger son usually being single.

  • Three Joseph Newby’s appear in Perq practically at the same time, & this makes quite a bit of confusion, but the writer has turned the leaves of time over, & over to discover proof of each one, and still has some doubt, but of this last named Joseph, she is sure.
  • Joseph Newby (unplaced) made his will in Perq, p April 21, 1735, and names no legatees, but wife Mary. As he left no heirs, he isn’t pertinent to this history anyway, so we will dismiss him.
  • Another Joseph, will p July 1752, wife Elizabeth, and dau Mary. This Joseph in the legal papers in Perq is called Joseph Jr, therefore it seems probable that he was son of Joseph Sr, and gr-son of Gabriel (1). He certainly could not have been son of Samuel, whose son Joseph, was born 1741, which would have made him only eleven years of age at the time this will was probated. It is thought that Joseph Newby (1) m Elizabeth Turner, (no date however) and had son Samuel who made his will 1737, and probably son Joseph Jr, but no proofs appear.
  • Joseph Newby petitioned the Court Jan 1735 for permission “to build a Mill on Suttons Creek, for the public good.” His son Gabriel made the same request on same date “if my father doth not comply with the Law in Building a Mill on Suttons Creek” craved leave to finish it. A final audit of the Est of Joseph Newby, Dec 1777, shows that his son Gabriel died prior to this date. The heirs of Gabriel (2) dec’d were allotted £54, s2, p10½. Other heirs: Joseph, Benjamin, Mary Clary, heirs of Elizabeth Mayo dec’d, Mary Thornton, Dorothy Phelps (step-dau, and daughter of his last wife Patience, by her 1st husband Matthew Jordan of Isle of Wight Co Va. Dorothy m 1st Jonathan Phelps, and 2d John Skinner) Elizabeth, wife of Francis Newby (also step-dau), and one of the heirs being “dead without issue,” his part was divided between all the heirs. The supposition is that this dec’d heir was the “poor decrepit son Josiah,” as he is not mentioned in this division.
  • Matthew Jordan (s of Matthew & Patience of Isle of Wight Co Va) will Perq, p July 1763, names “mother Patience Newby, and sisters Elizabeth Newby (wife of Francis) & Dorothy Skinner.” (The division of Jonathan Phelps shows that his wife was Dorothy, & loose papers give the fact that she m 2d John Skinner. She had by Jonathan Phelps sons: Jonathan, & Benjamin, and dau Dorothy. (See Phelps.)

  • Thomas (1) Nathan (1) Wm Newby (1) m Sarah Scott (d of Joseph of Va) early in 1700, (date illegible). He is spoken of on records in Perq, as “Thomas Newby of Va.”
  • Ann Scott of Vir, in a deed recorded in Perq, mentions her “nephew Exum Newby,” & apt’s him att’ to sell a place belonging to her in sd Co, called “Belvidere.” This estate is thought to be the same now called “the old Lamb place” across the River, from the town of Belvidere, & it is probable that the town derived its name from the adjoining plantation. Tradition has made it a fact. What relationship existed between Ann Scott, & Joseph, the records do not disclose, but this we do know; William Scott, of Nansemond Co, m Mourning Exum, & as the name of Exum continued to be carried down in the Newby, & allied families, in Perq Co, it seems more than probable, that Joseph Scott, was a son of said William. Mourning is also found as a given name of many of the ladies of the family. But as Thomas Newby did not make a will in Perq, no absolute proof can be found, to substantiate the fact.
  • Nathan Newby, lived over the “Causeway” at Bear Garden. He was one of the attendants of the “Ferry” over Perq River, to Phelps Point, & built the first “Goal” in Hertford. He was dead July 1735, “Mary Newby Relict.” She petitioned the Court July 1740, that “her tithables be taken off the main Road, to labour on the ferry Road, as it would be more convenient for her to ‘set over’ people and in that way ‘I shall get no Blame.’ ” The Causeway was at that time called “Newby’s Point” later called “Mary’s Point.” By Act of Assembly July 1755, a public “Ferry was Established, from Phelps Point, to Newby’s Point,” & Nathan (2) Newby was appointed “Ferryman” on his side, & Jonathan Phelps on his point. They were allowed the stipend of £4 per annum for their services. A ruling was made that they were to “Set over free; Inhabitants, of said Co, at Court times; Elections of Assemblymen; Vestry Elections; & Musters.”

MORGAN

  • James Morgan emigrant to N. C. came from “Mary Land” where he had married, Jane Knea, Oct 12, 1673. (Berkeley Parish Reg) According to same, they had issue: 1 James, b Feb 2, 1675/6—2 John, b Mar 26, 1678—3 William, b Aug 27, 1679. James (1) Morgan was grt 300a in Perq Precinct, May 22, 1694, “on a Branch of Vosses Creek” adj William Vosse, & Mr Francis Toms. His son John made a deed of gift to his dau Mary Elliott, wife of Thomas Jr, Jan 12, 1724/5, 50a on said Branch. He called this land “Broad Neck,” and later it was spoken of as “on Morgans Swamp” and it seems evident that it was situated on the south side of Vosses Creek, where sd Toms land was located, and the Swamp here mentioned, is probably the one just above what is now called Brights Mill, between Winfall, & Brights Creek. (Vosses) James Morgan, (2) James (1), m Jane Martin (d of John of Pasq Co) issue: James (3) b Jany 17, 1707/8. He died intestate, and we have to rely on the will of his wife Jane, for further information. Her will proven in Perq Co, Mar 22, 1742, Sons: John Anderson (son-in-law) & James Morgan, dau Sarah Parsons (wife of Samuel) dau-in-law Ann Morgan (wife of James) gr-daus: Mary, & Miriam Morgan, Elizabeth Cosan, & Jane Anderson.

JONES

  • As everyone knows there are Jones, and then Jones. While it is extremely difficult to decide with absolute certainty the descent of any line of this numerous family, and one is often very much confused by their many Johns, & Peters, yet we can with good grace give the various Peters in Perq with well founded authority. They are well defined on the records, but no mention is made of the place from which they came.
  • Jones, Peter (1) died in Perq Aug 4, 1679. As he made no will, nothing further can be found. It seems reasonable to suppose that the next by that name was his son. Also it seems probable that there was some connection by marriage, or otherwise, between the Jones’ family, & Robert Beasley, where said Peter Jones was buried. He was probably one of the Peter Jones descended from Abraham Jones, of Va, but there is no positive proof of this fact.
  • (2) Jones, Peter (2) Peter (1), m Elizabeth —. Issue: 1 Rebecca b Mar 14, 1694—2 William, b Sept 28, 1697—3 Peter, b May 7, 1700, Peter Jones, m 2d Mary Overman, issue: Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah, John, Hannah, & Mary.
  • His will p in Perq, April 1752, names children: John, to whom he bequeathed “plantation whereon I now live” & land at “Mile Branch.” To son William he left 170a, son Peter “plantation whereon I now live” dau’s: Mary, Hannah, & Margaret Jones, Sarah Sutton, Rebecca Denman, gr-son Thomas Sherwood, Exrs son John, & dau Mary.
  • The division of Mary Jones estate (d of Peter) Jan 1, 1758, makes plain the fact that he had two wives. Heirs of Mary Jones dec’d:

  • William Jones, “brother of the half blood.”
  • Peter Jones, “brother of the half blood.”
  • Elizabeth Sherwood, “sister of the whole blood.”

(The 1st son probably Zephaniah named in will.)
  • (2) Jones, William (1) Peter (1), m Priscilla Toms (d of Francis Jr, & Margaret Boge) issue: William, b Apl 27, 1732, d Mch 20, 1753, age 19 years. He was living when his father made his will, p in Perq, April 1752, naming, son William, dau Elizabeth Barber, & Rebeckah Jones, Exrs: Peter Jones (brother) & Moses Barber (son-in-law). As this son died the following year in young manhood, it seems probable that he died unmarried, therefore we are led to believe that William Jones had no male descendants in Perq.
  • Jones, Peter (3) will Perq p April 1753. Sons: Thomas, Zephaniah, Zachariah, Malachy (land on Mile Branch) dau Mary, wife Mary, gr-son Joseph Jones. Peter Jones Estate was divided Aug 1, 1758, among the several heirs; James Elliott received £81-11-9 “in Right of his wife Mary,” Zephaniah, & Malachi Jones same.
  • The division of Mary Jones Estate, July 1758, a “part to Joseph Jordan, in right of his ward Joseph Jones,” other heirs: Thomas Jones, James Elliott “in right of his wife” Zephaniah Jones, Malachi, & Zachariah Jones, each a part. In this division Thomas Jones is said to be the “eldest son of Mary Jones, who died intestate” April 18, 1758.

  • Mary Jones, wife of Joseph (1) died—1803.
  • Jones, Malachi (1) Peter (3) Peter (2) Peter (1) d. s. p. Will p in Perq, Jan 1777. Nephews: Joseph Jones, Nathan Elliott, William Jones (s of Zephaniah) Joshua Jones (s of Thomas) niece Mary Jones (d of Thomas) Exrs wife, brother Thomas, & Caleb White.
  • Jones, William, will p in Perq, Aug 1794, Wife Ann, dau’s: Sarah, Mary, & Margaret, sons: Josiah & Thomas. He lies buried at the Jones farm across “Jones Bottom” near Hertford.
