Free African Americans of North Carolina - Paul Heinegg's extensive
research on the beginnings of free people of color
Barnetta McGhee White has written several books about the families
she's researched as well as published many books of interest for North Carolina researchers which are highly regarded by the genealogy community.
She researches the surnames of McGHEE and FOUNTAIN, but her books also cover extensive Slavery Research for which she has transcribed Marriage and
Deeds. Book titles included are: A Quest for Enslaved Ancestors: The Extended family of
Griffin Fountain of Virginia and North Carolina; In Search of Kith and Kin: The History of a Southern Black Family; Somebody Knows My Name:
Marriages of Freed People in North Carolina, County by County. See
White's web page for additional information
and availability for ordering copies. (Copies of these books may be
available in the North Carolina Room of the Person County Library.)
Barnetta McGhee White has posted useful information from
adjacent Granville County on both her own website and here: Enslaved Ancestors Abstracted From
Granville County, North Carolina Deed Books Vols. I & 2, A-Z, 1746-1864
Another valuable record is the
1860 Granville County Slave Schedule
which is transcribed and contains analysis of the data; many Person Co. families had ties to Granville Co.
