THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

OF

LEMUEL STANDLY

June 12, 1823

In the name of God Amen. I LEMUEL STANDLY of the county of Camden & State of North Carolina being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory thanks be given unto God and calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament.

Item. I lend the use of all my lands, stock, household and kitchen furniture to my dearly beloved Wife RHODA STANDLY during her natural life or widowhood after selling enough of my estate to pay all my just debts & lawful expences such articles as my Executor shall think proper and at her death or marriage as hereafter named.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my dearly beloved Son THOMAS B. STANDLY my tract of land down the River near Raymonds Creek containing by estimation fifty acres to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever.

Its further my will that at my Wife death or marriage the residue of my estate to be sold and equally divided amongst my children JOHN FORBES, THOMAS B. STANDLY, SARAH STANDLY & MARY ANN STANDLY to them and their heirs lawfully begotten of their bodies forever.

Its further my will that if my Son JOHN S. FORBES should not have no heir lawfully begotten of his body or die before he comes to lawful age that his part should be equally divided amongst the surviving heirs above named.

Last of all I appoint and denominate my faithful friend SILAS FORBES and THOMAS STANDLY to be my whole and sole Executors. This 12th day of June 1823.

I PHILLIP TORKSEY being very sick and weak of body but of perfet sence and memory thanks be to God for it do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in maner form as followeth that is to say first I recominend my soul to God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried at the descreution of my Exect. Hereafter mentioned.

Itom. I give and bequeth to my beloved Brother —— TORKSEY one two year old hefer.

Itom. I give and bequeth to my beloved Brother JOHN TORKSEY one two year old heiffer.

Itom. I give and bequith to my beloved Cosen MAIGIL(?) REED(?) one negro boy Daniel at the decese of my Wife to her and her haire for ever.

Itom. I give and bequeth to my well beloved Wife (blacked out) of my estate both rail and pal?????.

And I appint and ordain my beloved Wife ELIZEBETH to be my whole and sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and do utterly disannul all other Wills by me made and acknowledge this to be my Last Will and Testament as witness my hand and seal this twenty fifth day of Feb. 1755. Elizbeth and ???? was underlined before sined.

November 10, 1745

 In the name of God Amen I JOHN TORKSEY of Pasquotank County in the Province of North Carolina being sickly and weak of body but of perfet mind and memory thanks be given unto God for it calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is apinted for all men to die do mak and ordain this my Last Will and Testement that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul in to the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried at the descration of my executers and as tuching such worldly estate whore with it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I dispose of in the following manner and form—–

Itom. I give and bequith to my well beloved THOMAS TORKSEY one negro man named Bossen and eight burels of pork thet he owes me and one feather bed to him and his heirs for ever.

Itom. I give and bequeath to my well beloved Son BENJAMAN TORKSEY the plentation that I now live on and all the land thar unto belonging and one feather bed to him and his heirs for ever.

Itom. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Daughters ELIZABETH and SUSANE — negros if there be to many of my negro woman named Jeane with ??? self and her two childern Pegg and Wappen and thare encrease betwn this and tim of delivery and if not to memey what there is liven at the time and if thare be more then fore of the sead negros my said Dafters to have which fore thay please to them and hares lawfull begotten of thare one bodys and if my childern that are liven and my will and desire is that shall not recive thare said negros nor devide them tel such time my youngest Dafter SUSANE arrives to the age of eighteen years or the day of marrye only my will and desir is that my Daughter ELIAZBETH shall have the use of the sd. negro garl Pegg at the day of marrye tel the time of devition then to be equelly devided between them likewise I give and bequeath my two Daughters each of them a good ??? furniture and a stone jugg at the day of mariage likewise my will and desir is that if ?? are be a negro or negros of the sd. Jeane and her childern and theire in creese then the fore apinted for my two Daughters to be equilly devided between my two Sons THOMAS and BENJAM and the rest of my estate to be equally divided among my four childern above named likwise I constitute make and ordain my two Sons above named my hole and sole Executere of this my Last Will and Testement and I do utterly dissalow ?????(to dark) testament heretofore as witness my hand and seal above written

Know all men by those presents that I AGNES TRUBLOOD of Pascotank River and of the County aforesd. Widow; through the naturall affections that I bare unto my dear children & for other good reasons md thereunto moueing: doe To my voluntary good will and naturall Respects to my four Children that is to say MARY TRUBLOOD ELIZIBETH TRUBLOOD JOHN TRUBLOOD & AMOS TRUBLOOD I doe freely give unto my four Children the one half of all the negro children that shall be begotten or born of the body of my negro woman called Diana; And if it should happen that theye should have but one that then the young negro to be valued and my Children to have theire choice either the young negro or if halfe worth of ye sd negro & if the negro woman should have two children that they shall have their first choice and soo forward be what quantitye of negro children ???? as pleases god; to be divided as aforesd. my childr. Always to have theire first choice; And I do freely give unto my Children aforesd. the mantainoned of shoes young negro until my Children (torn)mos to age to Receive them; That is my Dafter MARY to h(torn) she first negro child if it lives my Daughter ELIZIBETH the next as shay fall in corse as above mentioned, (torn)

In the Name of God Amen This twenty eighth day of October one Thousand seven Hundred and thirty four, I JOHN TRUBLOOD of ye Precinct of Pasquotank in No Carolina planter, being very sick & weak in body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be given to almighty God therefore, calling to mind the mortality of my body and owing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain his my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of god that gave itt and for my body I commend itt to the earth to be buried in a Christain like and Descent manner att the Discretion of my Executrix Nothing doubting but att the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of god and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased god to bless me in this life I give and devise and dispose of same in the form and following Manner.

Imprimis, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife SARAH TRUBLOOD my negro woman nam’d Hannah and her increase and the first child my negro girl Phillis bear that arrive to the age of two years to her and her heirs for ever and my bed I usually lye on and a rug and two blankets & one pair of sheets and bolster and a young Horse I bought of RICHARD GREGORY name Prince and bridle ??????? & her heirs for ever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Son JOHN TRUBLOOD my Maner plantation containing three Hundred acres of land and one hundred acres of land more or less lying on the North Branch of Arronnus Creek known by the name of Cretches old field made over by Deed by HENERY CRETCH & BENJAMIN CRETCH to him and his heirs for ever. Further I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Son JOHN TRUBLOOD my negro man nam’d Calle to him and his heirs for ever and I give and bequeath unto my Son JOHN TRUBLOOD the fourth child my negro Phillis bar ye ??? att the age of two years & my pair of Cart wheels, and all my shoemakers tools & carpenters tools and my young ??? gray horse named Spark and my saddle it is called my Son JOHNS saddle and a good bridle and two young cows & two young calves, and four young ewes and a young Ram and twenty hogs of one year old, and my narrow striped bed tick and bolster, and 1 ??? filled with new goose or duck feathers, and my best Juniper chest & one new iron pott holding eight gallons and a pewter bason that holds one gallon and a ??? middle sized pewter dish called a stewed (?) in sat (?) dish & two dozen (?) of new pewter spoons and my biggest gun, and one Bible called my Son JOHNS Bible, and a new book called The Pecretary Guide(?) & two new chairs, and my best white rug a pair of good new blankets and apair of new sheets, & two pair of my best leather breetches, and my broad cloth coat, and my best Druggett Coat and vest, & my best hat, and my best druggett britches and my two good shirts made of seven eights linen.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my Eldest daughter ELISABETH TRUBLOOD my young horse named Diamond and my side saddle & bridle and the second child my negro girl Phillis bears if lives att (too dark to read) two years to her and her heirs forever, and once (large section of page torn, covering 2 to 3 lines)

Phillis bear (torn) to it age of two years, to her and her heirs for ever, and a new testament, a two new chairs, and my woolen wheel and my linen wheel, and a pair of flyers and two new quills being the wheels her mother usually spun on to her and her heirs for ever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my Daughter MIRIAM TRUBLOOD my horse called Courage, and my riding saddle and abridle and the third child my negro girl Phillis bears that live to the age of two years; and my best feather bed and bolster and my rug ye I wove my self with shage of white & black twisted together, and two blankets made of cotten & wool, and one pair of home spun tare sheets, one new pewter bason holding agallon and a new middle sized stew meat dish, and one seven gallon iron pot, and my piece of cloth called ginmons containing ten yards, and my Juniper chest I keep my writing in and three young ewes & two young (?)eathers, and two young cows and calves, and twenty yearling hogs, and fifty bushels of Indian corn & two dozen of new pewter spoons, and my Loom, and seven pair of goose and ???? and their shackles and all my harness belonging thereto, and the eighth child my negro girl bear that live to ye age of two years, and anew testament to her & her heirs for ever and I give to my two Daughter ELISABETH and MIRIAM TRUBLOD my negro man named Nate(?) to them and their heirs forever. And further I give to my Daughter MIRIAM two new chairs, and my new linen wheel and anew pair of flyers and two new quills and my new wollen wheel ???? of sander lings(?) make and a good three gallon stone jug and a good Bee hieve with a good stock of bees in itt and my bedstead and a good bed ????? made by WM. LABRON and one half gallon stone mugg.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my Son FISHER TRUBLOOD one hundred acres of land known by the name of Ive Neck held by deed from GRIFFITH JONES Senj. And Twenty acres of land binding on the sound(?) held by ???? from WILLIAM CRETCH to him his heirs and assigns forever and fifth child my negro girl Phillis bear that live to the age of two years to him & his heirs for ever.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my Son DANIEL TRUBLOOD the sixth child my negro girl Phillis bear that comes to ye age of two years, and two young ewes and two young geathers(?) and a ram two young cows and calves and my least gun to him and heirs for ever.

If in case my well beloved wife SARAH TRUBLOOD be with child I give and bequeath unto itt five pounds current money of N. Carolina, and further I give to my Son JOHN TRUBLOOD my plow sheer and colder, itt being new and good and a three gallon stone jugg and my grindstone and a good stock of bee hiev in good order and one pint glazed mugg and one bed stead and bed cord to him and his heirs and further I give to my Daughter ELISABETH TRUBLOOD one stock of bees and hieve in good order and one three gallon stone jugg and one pint glazed mugg and her Mothers ????? Looking glass.

Further I give unto my true beloved Wife SARAH TRUBLOOD my negro girl named Phillis and all ye rest of my moveable estate further my will & desire is that my wife SARAH TRUBLOOD must Cause to suckle and nurse cause my negro girl Phillis to suckle or nurse the above mentioned negro which are unborn on her own cost and charge till they come to ye age of two years,

If in case either of my three children which I had by my first Wife JOHN ELISABETH & MIRIAM should be first before they (torn) to age and possess their Estates or Estate then the survivor of these my three children, JOHN ELISABETH & MIRIAM should possess their equal part of the Deceased estats or estate. And if either of my two young sons FISHER and DANIEL should die before they come of age and possess their estates the longest liver shall possess and enjoy the deceaseds part of ye estate and iff both these my two youngest Sons FISHER and DANIEL shold die before they come to age to possess their estates the surviour of my children shall inherit and possess the Deceaseds estates or estate.

Item: I give to my well beloved Wife SARAH TRUBLOOD and my beloved Daughter ELISABETH TRUBLOOD ???? I likewise constitute & ordain my only Executrixes to this my Last Will and Testament and I do appoint and ordain my beloved Brother ABEL ROSS and JARVIS JONES both of ye above mentioned precinct my Trustees of my children and their estates or estate (faded out) shall be stricky(?) Executed and fulfilled according to law. My will and desire is if y Eldest son JOHN TRUBLOOD may be Free att the age of sixteen years, butt not to make any bargains without the consent of my Trustees before mentioned and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments wills Legacies, requests and Eecutons by me in any ways before this time, named willed and Bequeathed, Ratifying and confirming this & no other to be my Last Will and Testament in Wittness Whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal the day and year above written.

In the name of God Amen, I ASA TUTTLE being of perfect mind and memory but knowing that life is uncertain & death certain do make this my Last Will and Testament, disanuling of all others this the 29 day of April One Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty Four.

To Wit. I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife POLLY one feather bed & furniture, one small chest, beaufat etc. one linnen wheel her choice, one large pot & small one, one pot transmel, one loom & harness, one quilt wheel, six setting chairs, one tea kettle & creeper, one cow & calf her choice, all of my corn pork fish & hogs lard now on hand two of her first choice of the large hogs & also two her first choice of the last winter piggs & one stock of flax to her & her heirs forever.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son in Law ARCHIBALD SAWYER one feather bed & furniture, one blue chest and one heffer my Wife’s choice and sixty dollars after paying all my just debts, to him & his heirs forever.

The balance of my estate after paying my just debts in manner above mentioned to equally divided between my children namely HAPEL (HASSEL?), POLLY, JOSEPH, PETER and ASA TUTTLE to them & their heirs forever. I also nominate and appoint my friend JESSE BELL Executor to this my Last Will and Testament.

JONES and DOZIER PERKINS before me GEORGE FEREBEE one of the Justices of the Peace in & for the County of Camden on this 9th day of November 1824 & being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God saith that they heard CHRISTOPHER WHITEHURST (who departed this life on the day & date above) say that it was his will & desire that OLLA PROVERB should have his estate real & personal of every description during her natural life & after paying all his just debts. And then deponents further say that they heard CHRISTOPHER WHITEHURST frequently say that it was his wish that the said OLLA PROVERB should have his estate during her natural life in health at different times.

JOHN WHITEHURST

July 10, 1822

In the name of God Amen. I JOHN WHITEHURST of the County of Camden & State of North Carolina. Being in a reasonable state of health in body & of perfect sound mind & memory thanks be given unto God for the same. Calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in the manner following.

Item the First. I give & bequeath unto my well beloved Son JOHN WHITE one half of my land where I now live where my houses are to him & his heirs forever.

Item the Second. I give & bequeath unto my well beloved Son SIMON WHITEHURST the other half of my land the same to be equally divided between my two Sons JOHN & SIMON WHITEHURST and to begin at JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN’S line & run diametrically across to JOSEPH WHITEHURST’S line, with a free privilege to drain each others land through either parts of said JOHN WHITEHURST’S & SIMON WHITEHURST’S land, and one cow & calf that he claims to him & his heirs forever.

Item the Third. I give & bequeath to my well beloved Daughter MARY WHITEHURST one feather bed & furniture and one cow and calf to her & her heirs forever.

Fourthly. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Daughter SALLY WHITEHURST one feather bed & furniture and one cow & calf to her & her heirs forever.

Lastly. I leave all the remainder of my property to be sold to pay my just debts any should remain after paying my just debts to be equally divided between CHARLES WHITEHURST, JANE TAYLOR, SALLY BRITE, MARY WHITEHURST and JACKY WHITEHURST. Furthermore it is my will and desire should either or both of my Sons JOHN WHITEHURST or SIMON WHITEHURST die without an heir lawfully begotten by their body for my two Daughters MARY & JACKY WHITEHURST to have the said deceased land.

I also appoint & constitute my Son CHARLES WHITEHURST & my Son in Law JOHN M’ALLEN BRITE Executors to this my Last Will and Testament to do according to the legacies bequeathed in witness I have hereunto set my hand & seal this the 10 of July 1822.

This instrument of writing was exhibited in open Court & proved as the Last Will & Testament of JOHN WHITEHURST dec’d. by the oath of IRA McPHERSON a subscribing witness thereto—–And at same time CHARLES WHITEHURST one of the Executors therein named appeared & qualified as an Executor thereto Ordered that Testamentary letters issue, & that the same be Recorded.

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

OF

ALEAPH WRIGHT

April 3, 1820

In the name of God amen, I Aleaph Wright of the county of Camden and state of North Carolina being of sound mind and perfect memory do this third day of April One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say.

Imprimis.  I give all of my clothes to be equally divided between the following persons hereafter named that is to say Franky Berry, Elish Wright, Macky Squires, Bathian Tillett, and Bigha Riggs the Wife of Thomas Riggs to them and their heirs forever.

Item.  I give unto my daughter Bathan Tillett one bed and furniture as following one bolster, two pillows, two sheets and two counterpiny, and one cow and calf, if there is one belonging to my estate at my death to her and her heirs forever.

Item.  I give my son William Tillett one teaster bedstead bed and furniture first choice and all other property belonging to my estate in doors and out that is not already given away, and at my death the property given to my Son I wish to be sold as much in as little as my Executor hereafter named may think proper at six months credit to him and his heirs forever.

I hereby nominate and appoint my friend Thomas Roberts Executor to this my Last Will and Testament revoking all other Wills heretofore made by me acknowledging this to be my Last in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and date above written.
