BELL Family Bible – (COL. BRICKHOUSE BELL died 1822)

The following was copied from a Bible owned by Cartwright Bell, son of Brickhouse Bell and Jane Cartwright Bray.

  • Brickhouse Bell and Jane Bray, widow of William Bray, were married 16 day of Sept. 1790.
  • Col. Brickhouse Bell of Camden County died February 28, 1822.
  • Col. Brickhouse Bell married Mrs. M. Downs March 11, 1821 (R. R. Records say March 23)
  • Jane Cartwright was the daughter of Peter Cartwright and Jane Morgan. She married three times. First to Jesse Barnard, second to William Bray, third to Brickhouse Bell.
  • Jane Morgan Cartwright was probably the daughter of Joseph Morgan. She was born 9 November 1764 and died November 1820.
  • Nancy Bell was born 3 June 1791.

BRICKHOUSE BELL (1822 Will)

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

OF

BRICKHOUSE BELL

February 20(28?), 1822

In the name of God Amen! I BRICKHOUSE BELL of the County of Camden and State of North Carolina being weak of body but of sound mind and memory knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner & form following Viz.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Wife MARY BELL all the property of every nature & kind she was possessed of when I intermarried with her, except such as have been made use of, also one gig, two sows and eleven shuts, & four pigs & all the previsions in the house except four barrels of old pork to her & her heirs forever.

Item. I lend to my Daughter NANCY COX during her natural life the following negroes viz. Amy & her three children Stephen, Smart, and Sarah, & Lucy & her child Dinah, Lini & Smart son of Lucy and after her death, I give & bequeath unto the children of my Daughter NANCY COX as well those hereafter to be born as those already born, the above mentioned negroes that I loaned her during her natural life to them & their heirs forever. I give & bequeath unto my Daughter NANCY COX one sorrel mare called Cross to her & her heirs forever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter JANE BRAY, the following negroes viz. one negro woman named Courtney & her three children, Sally, Stephen, & Julia, also one negro man named Young Charles, one negro woman called Young Sarah & her Son Demsey to her & her heirs forever.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son CARTWRIGHT BELL part of the land that I purchased of CALEB CHURCH bounded as follows viz. beginning at the North River opposite a branch where ABNER ROBESON formerly lived running northwardly to the mouth of said branch, then up said branch to a ditch then up the ditch to the main road, then across the main road north twenty one(?) east by a line of marked trees to JOHN WILLIAMS line then west said WILLIAMS line to the run TULLY GREGORY’S line then down the main stream of the run to the North River then the various courses of the River to the first station also one negro man named Enoch, one negro girl Rachel and one negro girl Grace to her and her (sic) heirs forever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my Son TULLY BELL the remainder of the land I purchased of CALEB CHURCH whereon he now lives also the land I purchased of THOMAS C. FEREBEE also one negro man named Willis, one negro girl named Claricey, one negro man called Old Charles, one negro woman Old Sally, one bed & furniture one yoke of young oxen, two cows & calves, six head of sheep to him & his heirs forever.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son JAMES W. BELL all the land I purchased of SARAH STEWART also the swamp I purchased of JOHN LAMB, also one negro man named Lerry(?), one negro girl named Lomen, one old man Cuffee, one old man Jack, one bed & furniture, two cows & calves, six head of sheep, to him and his heirs forever. My will and desire is that the board & tutition of my Son JAMES W. BELL at Raleigh be paid out of the money in hand—the ??? to be made out of the property not given away in particular legacies also one hundred dollars in notes for the purpose of purchasing him a horse.

My will & desire is that all the property not before given away in particular legacies at my death to be equally divided amongst my five children, viz. NANCY, JANE, CARTWRIGHT, TULLY & JAMES W. BELL.

Lastly I nominate & appoint my Son in Law ANDREW BRAY & my two Sons CARTWRIGHT & TULLY my whole & sole Executors to this my Last Will & Testament. Revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the twenti (runs off the page could be 20th or 28th not sure) day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred Twenty two.

April 10, 1736

In the name of God Amen. I THOMAS GREGORY of Pasquotank Preseink for North Carolina Planter. Being ??? perfect mind & memory Thanks be given unto God almighty. Calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that its appointed for all men once to die do make & ordain this my Last Will & Testament that is to say ??????? first of all I give & recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave to & for my Body I recommend to ???? to be buried in a Christian like desent manner ????? descretion of my Executor nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. & as touching such worldly estate whorwith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner following.

Imprimis. I give & bequeath unto my Son NATHAN GREGORY his heirs & assigns for ever all my manner plantations where I now dwell & half of a certain tract of land containing two hundred & sixty seven acres lying on ye head of the Eataron(?)(Edenton?) Branch of Arronuse Croock on ye NE side of Pasquotank River ??? ye’s County aforsd. As more fully appoint(?) by ye pattent afore?? To be equally divided between my Sons NATHAN & SAMPSON without hurting one another after my dis??? & ??????? Son NATHAN should die without issue ye aforsaid manner plantation with it go two hundred & sixty seven acres should fall to my Son SAMPSON & his heirs forever. ???? Son SAMPSON should die without issue the aforsaid tract of land shall fall to my Son JACOB & his heirs for ever.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son JACOB aka JOB after my diseas my negro man Tonsy.

Item. I also give & bequeath —— my Son RICHARD GREGORY five shillings current money to RICHARD by my Executors (can’t make out rest ink has bled through)

Item. I give and bequeath unto my Son WILLIAM GREGORY five shillings current money to be paid by my executors herein after mentioned—

Item. I also give & bequeath ???? my Grandson FREDZICK GREGORY five shillings current money to be paid by my executors herein after mentioned.

Item. I give & bequeath after my deseas unto my Son JACOB GREGORYELISABETH GODFREJOB GREGORYSAMPSON GREGORYNATHAN GREGORY, PRISILLARY GRAY all my moveable estate to be equally divided after my desseas to the above mentioned—–

Item. SALLY HATHAWAY

May 9, 1822

In the name of God Amen! I SALLY HATHAWAY of the County of Camden and State of North Carolina being weak in body but sound in mind & memory blessed be Almighty God for the same do make & publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following viz.

First. I give & bequeath unto my Nephew JAMES HATHAWAY Son of NATHL. & ANGELICA HATHAWAY my bureau to him his heirs & assigns forever.

I also give & bequeath to my Sister ANGELICA HATHAWAY all my crockery ware to her her heirs & assigns forever.

I also give & bequeath to my Sister NANCY BELL, one hundred dollars to her heirs & assigns forever.

I lend to my Sister NANCY BELL my negro boy Jerry during her natural life & at her decease I give and bequeath him to JAMES HATHAWAYHORATIO N. HATHAWAY & the child which my Sister ANGELICA is now pregnant with—in case of the death of either the sd. JAMESHORATIO, or the said child which my said Sister is now pregnant with, for the said Jerry to go to the survivors to them their heirs or assigns forever.

I also give & bequeath to JAMES HATHAWAYHORATIO N. HATHAWAY & the child which my Sister ANGELICA is now pregnant with Five Hundred dollars to remain in the hands of my Sister MARY BELL & to be laid out in clothing & educating them at her discretion or to remain in her hands, until they arrive at the age of Twenty One Years & in case of her death to leave it with some person she may think proper, to be laid out in the manner they may think proper, either in clothing & educating them or to retain in their hands until the said JAMESHORATIO & the child which my Sister ANGELICA HATHAWAY is now pregnant arrive the age of Twenty One Years, in case of the death of either for it to go to the survivors.

Lastly. I give & bequeath to my Sister MARY BELL all the rest and remainder of my property both personal or real including the place HORATIO N. WILLIAMS bought for me formerly the property of SILAS JONES to her & her heirs and assigns forever she paying all my just debts.

And I hereby nominate, constitute, make and appoint my Sister MARY BELL Executrix & my friend HORATIO N. WILLIAMS Executor to this my Last Will & Testament revoking all & every other Will or Wills or Testaments heretofore by me made & acknowledged this & this only to be my last. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the ninth day of May Anno Domini One Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty Two.

MALACHI SAWYER (1824 Will)

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

MALACHI SAWYER

March 30, 1824

In the name of God Amen! I MALACHI SAWYER of the County of Camden and State of North Carolina, being sick, but of sound disposing mind and memory and having in mind that it is appointed unto all men to die, and being willing to dispose of my worlaly affairs do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say.

Item the first. I give & bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER all of my negroes viz. boy March, Jerry, John, Miles, Rose and Jane to her and her heirs forever.

Item. I also give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER one tract of land lying in said County bounded on the South and Westside by the lands of ISAAC LAMB and on the North & East by the lands of JOHN GRANDY being all of the land which I bought of NATHANIEL WILROY and that which I now live on to her & her heirs forever.

Item. I also give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER one tract of land in said County near the Court House being all of the land which I bought of THOMAS BELL, bounded as follows on the East by the lands of ISAAC LAMB, on the West by THOMAS GORDON & on the N. by the main road & the walking lands, to her and her heirs forever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER one tract of land lying about one half mile below Camden Court House on the W. side of the main road bounded as follows, on the West by the lands which belong to the heirs of JOHN WILROY and on the North by the lands which formerly belonged to CALEB PHILLIP’S and on the East by JOSEPH DOZIERS’ lands & the lands of ISAAC LAMB it being all of the tract which belonged to JOHN WATKINS to have & hold the same she and her heirs forever.

Item. I also give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER a certain tract of land lying in Forty Pound Neck bounded as follows, bounded on the West by the lands of MARK UPTON, on the North by the lands of HENRY AYDELETT’S heirs, on the East by the lands of THOMAS ETHERIDGE and on the South by the lands which belong to the heirs of JOHN GREAVES being by estimation Seventeen & three quarters of acres which formerly belonged to the estate of JOHN WADKINS to her and her heirs forever.

Item. I also give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife SUSANNA SAWYER after paying of all my just debts all the residue of my estate of every kind & nature whatsoever to her and her heirs forever.

Lastly. I hereby nominate and appoint my Wife SUSANNA SAWYER whole and sole Executrix to this my Last Will and Testament revoking all other wills and Publishing this and this only to be my true Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this the 30th day of March One Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty Four. 1824
