          No. 240: Christopher Gale, John Lovick, & William Little, Esquires; Exors, & Trustees Apt’ in the last will of Henry Clayton, late of Chowan Pre’ct, Esq; said will Jan 20, 1725/26, “did bequeath to them” his Plan’ in Perq, called the “Vineyard”, for the use of his Dau’ Sarah Clayton & did empower them to sell same: One Abraham Sanders being the Highest Bidder do sell same for £400 “where Henry Clayton formerly lived”, being two thirds of 640a Patented Feb 6 —- One Half bought by Major James Coles Dec’d of Wm Fryley, & Grace his wife, & by said James Coles in his will “divided between his dau’ Elizabeth & his wife Mary’ & was by Henry Clayton purchased of Wm Hall of Perq. Book D, No. 101: Thomas Houghton, of Chowan, & Elizabeth, his wife, dau of Jonathan Evans dec, for £100 paid by Richard Skinner, Abram Sanders & Zachariah Nixon, (all of Perq), planter–, & John Wilcocks, of said Co., Millwright–sold 150a on Southeast side of “Castletons Creek,” up Creek Swamp, between Thomas & his brother William Houghton, “a dividing line between Peter Joses Jun, & the Orphans of John Williams dec,” over a Branch called “Beaver dam Swamp” formerly belonging to “Jonathan Evans, father of said Elizabeth,” April 18, 1743.               No. 143: Abraham Sanders, Zachariah Nixon, of Perq, Planters—& John Wilcocks, of same, Millright—to Richard Skinner, of said Co., Planter—for £75 assigned “our right in a plan” on Southeast side of Castletons Creek, which we bought of Thomas and Elizabeth Haughton, adj Peter Jones Jun, & John Williams dec, 150 a part of a tract “formerly Jonathan Wvans.” Jan 17, 1743.           No. 133: Zachariah Chancey of Perq sold unto Abraham Sanders, of afore’ one negro boy named Cato, aged two years, for £100 “in open market.” Jan 7, 1746. Test’ Rt Wilson, Stephen Chancey.

          No. 134: N.C. July Court 1748. Present his Majesties Justices. “Bill of sale of a negro boy Cato was assigned over by Abraham Sanders, to Mr. Luke Sumner.” Edmund Hatch Clk Ct.

Book F, No. 155: Moses Elliott, & Judith his wife, of Perq, for £20 pd by Moses Barber , of afsd–sold 98a. 47 of which was grt to Abraham Sanders dec’d & 41a a new patent , sd land “bequeathed to sd Judah Boice.” April 22, 1755. Test’ Francis Robbins, William Skinner.

          No. 176: Abraham Sanders of Bladen Co. NC for £33 pd by William Lamb of Perq, sold 190a on So Wt side of perq River, between lands of Charles Jordan & Col John Harvey, to line of John Pritlow. Oct 13, 1755. Test’ Joseph White, Jno Sanders, Jno White. (note: This Abraham was the son of Abraham Sanders & Judith Pritlow of Perquimans County.)

Book G, No. 5: Robert Avery for £25 pd by Zachariah Jones, sold 50a, on “the main road that goeth to Edenton” along line of land bought by Moses Baker, of Moses Elliott, & land formerly Abraham Sanders. Jan 20, 1761. Test’ Joshua Skinner, Sam’l Standin, Zepaniah Jones. 

Booh I, No. 50: William Baker of Perq. for £50 pd by Benjamin Sanders , of afsd—sold 50a pt of land given by Abraham Sanders, to Judith Boyce, & by sd. Judith & Moses Elliott, her then husband, conveyed to Moses Barber, adj land pat’ by sd Abraham in 1749. Seal Jan 19, 1778. Test’ John Stafford.

  • In “Paule” of London, July 16, 1635, Kathren Wilson, age 28, and children: Robert, age 6—Richard, age 5. (Hotten.)
  • William Edwards, Clerk of Surry Co Va, was grt (with Rice Davis) 1080a in sd county, for trans’ among others, Robert Wilson, & Henry White. July 10, 1648.
  • William Wilson “of the City of Bristoll, Mercht; apt’ son John of Isle of Wight Co, Va Att’ Aprill 26, 1666.” (Isle of Wight Records.)
  • George Hardy of Isle of Wight Co, in his will bequeathed, “Land, Housing, my Mill, with all movable Est, to be equally divided between Kinsman George Hardy, & Christopher Willson, after the decease of my wife,” He gave also 1000 lbs of Tob toward building a Church in this Parish, “to be Built of Brick.” To Christopher Willson “Land in Suit between me & Successors of Justinian Cooper, in case it be restored.” (Records Isle of Wight.)
  • Robert Wilson was living in Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co Va, 9, 12mo 1688, when he witnessed the mar banns of Levin Buffkin, & Dorothy Newby, at the house of Thomas Jordan. He recorded his mark in Perq Co N. C. April 1689, and his son Isaac did the same, May 1689.
  • At a quarterly meeting at the house of Henry White, in Perq, 1, 3mo 1695 Robert Wilson, Francis Tomes, & Henry White, were apt to “write a letter to friends in London, in behalf of the Meeting.”
  • The will of Robert Wilson, p in Perq Precinct Jan 11, 1696. Son: Isaac, dau Sarah Belman, gr-children: Robert, & Ann Wilson, Sarah, & Ester Belman; wife Ann Extrix. (This will was proven before John Archdale, Daniel Akehurst, Francis Tomes, & Samuel Swann, Justices; at the house of Samuel Swann.)
  • (1) Robert Willson died “at his own house, up the Narrows of Perq River” Dec 21, 1696. (Roman Calendar.) His wife Ann moved back to Surry Co Va, where her will was p 21, 5mo 1702, reads as follows: “Disposing of worldly Est itt hath pleased God to bestow upon me in Carolina, do bequeath unto Robert Borsman, & Ann, ye son, and dau of John Borsman; & Sarah His wife, except cattle etc, to be equally divided between Robert Wilson, & Ann Wilson, son & dau of Isaac Wilson, & Ann his first wife.” Jno Tooke, & Sam’ll Cornell Exrs.   • (1) Isaac Wilson, m Ann — issue: 1 Robert, b 10, 8mo 1690—2 Ann, b 16 7mo 1692—3 Benjamin, b 19, 10mo 1694. Isaac Wilson m 2d Ann Parker (d of Robert, & Hannah, “b at Nattensate in Ash Church Parish, in Glouster Sheer”) Mch 31, 1701, issue Isaac, b Nov 18, 1702.   • Isaac Willson will Perq, p July 13, 1714. Sons: Benjamin, Robert, Isaac, dau Ann, wife Ann. He was a Burgess in Perq Co, Oct 11, 1709.
  • (2) Isaac Wilson d. s. p. will p in Perq Dec 29, 1724. Brothers: Benjamin, Robert, nephews: Joseph, & Isaac Wilson, to whom he left a plan’ on Perq River “where Capt Pettiver now lives,” niece Rachel Wilson, mother Ann Pettiver, uncle Ralph Bozman, other legatees: Joseph, & Thomas Elliott.
  • (3) Isaac Wilson, will Perq p April 1751. Sons: Robert, James, dau’s Rachel, and Miriam Wilson, wife Elizabeth (née Perry, married 2, 12mo 1742).
  • (1) Joseph Wilson (s of Benjamin) Will Perq, p July 1752. Son: Reuben, dau’s Elizabeth, & Mary, wife Mary. Wit’ Jacob Wilson, Wm Townsend, Rachel Winslow.
  • (2) Robert Wilson (s of Isaac & Ann) m Rachel Pricklove (Pretlow) (d of John, and wife Elizabeth). His will p in Perq, June 1758. Sons: Isaac, and Silvanus, dau Rachel Townsend, gr-sons: Reuben Wilson, Obed Winslow, Caleb Winslow, gr-dau’s Elizabeth, and Mary Wilson. Exrs Barnaby Nixon, & Jacob Winslow (gr-son).
  • Rachel Wilson, m 1st Timothy Winslow, issue three sons, & one dau; m 2d William Townsend, issue four children, m 3d John Williams, by whom no issue. Her will Perq county, p July 1777, is a very interesting document.

  • Edward Wilson, came to Va in “Plaine John” May 15, 1635, age 22. He settled in Surry Co, from which place he moved to Perq Co N. C. When or where he married can not be certain, but his wife is given in Berkeley Par Reg.
  • Edward Wilson, & wife Rachell—issue: 1 John, b Jan 11, 1686—2 Edward, b Last of Feb, 1687/8—3 John (2d by name) b Sept 14, 1693—4 Elizabeth, b Feby 24, 1692—5 Sarah, b July 14, 1695. Edward Wilson died 1712. Dau Sarah m Daniel Jones.
  • (1) John Wilson, m Elizabeth Mayo (d of Edward (2) & wife Mary née Clare, d of Timothy Clare, & wife Mary née Bundy) & had according to Mary Newby’s (née Clare) will 1739, issue: 1 son John Wilson.
  • (2) John Wilson, m Ann — will p April 1785, Wife Ann, dau’s Rebecca, & Amey. His division, Nov 24, 1798, shows: dau Rebecca Webb, & Amey Wilson.

  • (1) William Wilson, moved from Pasq Co, to Tyrrell, where his will was p June 1741. Sons: Patterson, William, Thomas, Benjamin, dau’s Rebecca, Sarah, & Rosaman Wilson, & Mary Scarbrough, Elizabeth Barclifte. His wife Sarah evidently moved back to Pasq, where her will was p April 1754. Sons William, Benjamin, Thomas, dau’s Rebeckah Furbush, Elizabeth Bartlet. Patterson Wilson died in Pasq Co before his mother, so he is not named in her will. His will sd county: p July 12, 1746, names son: William, dau Mary, wife Elizabeth.

MORRIS

Among passengers in Speedwell of London bound for America May 28, 1635 Richard Morris, age 19 years. Another by same name came to Va from London, the same year age 17. Edward Morris was transported to Va by John Ellis, Apl 1648. (Hotten.)

Mr Richard Morris “Minister of Bristol pish” Henrico Co Va, became later a resident of Isle of Wight Co, and had dau Anne, who was his heir 1678, her uncle Samuel Morris acting as Ex of his Estate. (Isle of Wight records.)

John Morris was living in Lower Norfolk Co Va, 1740. Charles Moris whose name is the first to appear on the records of Perq Co N. C. attended a Mo Meeting at Arnold White’s house 24, 4mo 1679. He was probably father of John who appears in Perquimans county about 1704, with wife Hannah, they were living in Perq 1716. Little River Quaker Reg, gives most valuable information about this family, and they are always the best of authority.

JONES

  • As everyone knows there are Jones, and then Jones. While it is extremely difficult to decide with absolute certainty the descent of any line of this numerous family, and one is often very much confused by their many Johns, & Peters, yet we can with good grace give the various Peters in Perq with well founded authority. They are well defined on the records, but no mention is made of the place from which they came.
  • Jones, Peter (1) died in Perq Aug 4, 1679. As he made no will, nothing further can be found. It seems reasonable to suppose that the next by that name was his son. Also it seems probable that there was some connection by marriage, or otherwise, between the Jones’ family, & Robert Beasley, where said Peter Jones was buried. He was probably one of the Peter Jones descended from Abraham Jones, of Va, but there is no positive proof of this fact.

He was living when his father made his will, p in Perq, April 1752, naming, son William, dau Elizabeth Barber, & Rebeckah Jones, Exrs: Peter Jones (brother) & Moses Barber (son-in-law). As this son died the following year in young manhood, it seems probable that he died unmarried, therefore we are led to believe that William Jones had no male descendants in Perq.

COX

Robert Cox appears in Perq very early. He was one of the signers of some of the early petitions for roads in Perq Precinct, and his home was Little River, where he died before Nov 25, 1730. Will probated on that date. Only one son Robert(2) is named in this will, and daughters: Sarah Coxe, & Anne Weeks, wife Elizabeth. Test’ Mary Collings, John Boswell.

Cox, Robert (2), Robert (1) m Ann — (sister of Sarah Hendricks, wife of Jeremiah). His will, p in Perq, June 5, 1768. Sons: Joseph, Robert (3) Seth, gr-son John Cox, gr-dau Sarah Cox, dau Ann Boswell, wife Ann, (Grimes) Robert Cox appears on Tax list of Thomas Weeks, J. P. 1742, 43, 53. Josiah Gilbert, in his will, p in Perq 14, 3mo 1758, names dau Jemima Cox, wife Sarah, sons: Jeremiah, Joseph, Thomas, & Joel Gilbert. Anne Cox died 8, 10mo 1809.

John Cox, with his family moved from Pasq Co, to Suttons Creek Perq Co 20, 3mo 1802, with children: Joseph, Jacob, John, Josiah (died 1808), Aaron, & Caleb.

Cox, Joseph (s of John, & Miriam) m Polly Cain (Cane) July 4, 1793. She is named in the will of Nath’l Cane as daughter, whose will was p in Perq, Feb 1800 with her husband Joseph Cox. Joseph Cox m 2d Sylvia Cane (sister of his 1st wife) before 1800. He m 3rd Mary — who survived him. His will Perq Feb 1813, names wife Mary, sons: Myles, Willis, Laban, Joseph (2) and dau Lydia Gilly, & Mary Cox. Francis White Ex.

Another Cox family in Perquimans, is that of Dr. David Cox, who came to Perquimans from Currituck Co N. C. before the War between the States, settling as a young man at New Hope. He later moved to Hertford, where he built up a large practice, and married Miss Sallie White, daughter of Mrs. Ann White, and sister of the wife of Mr. Zach Toms of Hertford. Dr. Cox was a rugged character of great power, and strength, and any word he uttered was accepted as his bond. The writer, to whom he was a family Physician until his health failed, had the greatest admiration for him, not only as a Doctor, but as a man, and reposed in him every confidence, felt herself enriched by his friendship. He introduced the present “pump” into the town and county, being a strong advocate of good water, as a means of good health. Before the advent of these “pumps” the lower counties were stricken each year with Typhoid, Malarial fever, chills, and worst of all Hemorrhagic fever, a fever almost equal to Typhus, and each year the bad climate took toll of many little children, probably from the cause of surface water principally, and much is due Dr. Cox for revolutionizing the water supply of this county. His quaint ways, and sayings are a byword in the county even today, and his memory will always be green in the minds of those who were fond of him.

By his wife, Sallie White, he had issue:

1 Thomas A. Cox, M. D., Hertford, N. C., who also enjoys a good practice and many friends.2 William (Bill), of Burlington, N. C. the comedian of Hertford for many years in local plays. m Miss Bird. Bill, as he is familiarly called by all his friends, is a prince of good fellows. (David (2), Registered Surveyor, now in partnership with his equally talented son, David (3), one of Perquimans and the elder of Elizabeth City, N. C. 4 Sallie, m Mr. — Urquart of Norfolk, Va. 5 Dennis, deceased, who m Miss Nellie Hoskins of Perq, leaving two sons. David Cox (2) has three children, by Nina Parker (d of Mr David Parker), one, of Hertford, and the two daughters of Norfolk, Va. Neither Dr Tom Cox, or his brother Bill have any children.

Dr. David Cox (1) m 2d Clara Small, of Hertford, and had issue: 1 Harriett, m James McNider, Lawyer, of Hertford, and has one son. 2 Nancy. 3 Virginia (both single), school teachers in the City of Norfolk. 4 James Marmaduke, graduate of the University of N. C., single, living in Chicago.
