Book B, No. 85: James Thigpen, Jun. for £50 pd. by Abraham Sanders, assigns Right to Land. April 10, 1721. Test’ Samuel Philips, Rich’d Leary.

              No. 159: Abraham Sanders of Perq. for £60 pd by Benjamin Sanders , of afore’ sold 100a on S.W. side of the “narrows” of Perq.

          No. 240: Christopher Gale, John Lovick, & William Little, Esquires; Exors, & Trustees Apt’ in the last will of Henry Clayton, late of Chowan Pre’ct, Esq; said will Jan 20, 1725/26, “did bequeath to them” his Plan’ in Perq, called the “Vineyard”, for the use of his Dau’ Sarah Clayton & did empower them to sell same: One Abraham Sanders being the Highest Bidder do sell same for £400 “where Henry Clayton formerly lived”, being two thirds of 640a Patented Feb 6 —- One Half bought by Major James Coles Dec’d of Wm Fryley, & Grace his wife, & by said James Coles in his will “divided between his dau’ Elizabeth & his wife Mary’ & was by Henry Clayton purchased of Wm Hall of Perq. Book C, No. 165: Francis Newby, for £150 pd by Josiah Gilbert, of Perq, sold 125a on So Wt Side of Perq River, called “Benj Gidings Old Field’ adj Abraham Sanders, & Isaac Wilson, “now in possession of John Pettiver.” Dec 6, 1736. Test’ Thomas Gilbert, Wm Townsend.    

Book D, No. 101: Thomas Houghton, of Chowan, & Elizabeth, his wife, dau of Jonathan Evans dec, for £100 paid by Richard Skinner, Abram Sanders & Zachariah Nixon, (all of Perq), planter–, & John Wilcocks, of said Co., Millwright–sold 150a on Southeast side of “Castletons Creek,” up Creek Swamp, between Thomas & his brother William Houghton, “a dividing line between Peter Joses Jun, & the Orphans of John Williams dec,” over a Branch called “Beaver dam Swamp” formerly belonging to “Jonathan Evans, father of said Elizabeth,” April 18, 1743.               No. 143: Abraham Sanders, Zachariah Nixon, of Perq, Planters—& John Wilcocks, of same, Millright—to Richard Skinner, of said Co., Planter—for £75 assigned “our right in a plan” on Southeast side of Castletons Creek, which we bought of Thomas and Elizabeth Haughton, adj Peter Jones Jun, & John Williams dec, 150 a part of a tract “formerly Jonathan Wvans.” Jan 17, 1743. Book D, No. 26: Abraham Sanders, Sr. & Abraham Sanders Jr, of Perq for £10 pd by Wm Townsend, of afsd–sold ten a adj sd Townsen, & Phelps, part of a tract I had of my “father-in-law John Pritlaw” of same. Jan 25, 1744/45. test’ William Phelps, Samuel Sitterson, James Sitterson.

          No. 133: Zachariah Chancey of Perq sold unto Abraham Sanders, of afore’ one negro boy named Cato, aged two years, for £100 “in open market.” Jan 7, 1746. Test’ Rt Wilson, Stephen Chancey.

          No. 134: N.C. July Court 1748. Present his Majesties Justices. “Bill of sale of a negro boy Cato was assigned over by Abraham Sanders, to Mr. Luke Sumner.” Edmund Hatch Clk Ct.

          No: 135: Abraham Sanders, assigns the right of one negro boy Cato unto Luke Sumner. April 19, 1748. Test’ Samuel Moore, Jeremiah Pratt, John Parish. 

Book F, No. 155: Moses Elliott, & Judith his wife, of Perq, for £20 pd by Moses Barber , of afsd–sold 98a. 47 of which was grt to Abraham Sanders dec’d & 41a a new patent , sd land “bequeathed to sd Judah Boice.” April 22, 1755. Test’ Francis Robbins, William Skinner.

          No. 176: Abraham Sanders of Bladen Co. NC for £33 pd by William Lamb of Perq, sold 190a on So Wt side of perq River, between lands of Charles Jordan & Col John Harvey, to line of John Pritlow. Oct 13, 1755. Test’ Joseph White, Jno Sanders, Jno White. (note: This Abraham was the son of Abraham Sanders & Judith Pritlow of Perquimans County.)

Book G, No. 5: Robert Avery for £25 pd by Zachariah Jones, sold 50a, on “the main road that goeth to Edenton” along line of land bought by Moses Baker, of Moses Elliott, & land formerly Abraham Sanders. Jan 20, 1761. Test’ Joshua Skinner, Sam’l Standin, Zepaniah Jones. 

Booh I, No. 50: William Baker of Perq. for £50 pd by Benjamin Sanders , of afsd—sold 50a pt of land given by Abraham Sanders, to Judith Boyce, & by sd. Judith & Moses Elliott, her then husband, conveyed to Moses Barber, adj land pat’ by sd Abraham in 1749. Seal Jan 19, 1778. Test’ John Stafford. 

 

SPIVEY

In deed book 10, page 62, Norfolk Co Va, can be seen the will of Matthew Spivey dated Feb 16, 1718. He bequeathed to Extrix “the use of my water Mill, & Rents of my lands, use of Cattle, and old Cows, with my Stock of Hoggs in the hands of Edward Wood, Edward Weston, and William Ward, in the Government of N. C.” To said Extrix, use of lands “for bringing up my four youngest Children” dau Sarah, son Matthew, “when he comes of full size, to him my Maner plantation, with Water Mill, at age provided he affirm Saile for tract of Land in the tenor of John Staford, unto my son George Spivey.” Children: Sarah, Judith, Tamer, Elizabeth, Matthew, & George Spivey. To Wm Joshson “one coate.” Appointed “Mother, Mrs. Judith Nichols, & dau Sarah Extrix” jointly. Test’ Hannah Holiday, Robert, & John Bowers, Thomas Maning.

  • John Granbery of Nansemond Co Va, made a deed in Norfolk Co Vir, “with consent of Ann his wife,” unto Moses Prescott of Norfolk Co, “Land on Northwest River,” patented by John Creekmore, April 20, 1689, and sold by him to Daniel Browne, June 24, 1691, by said Browne, conveyed to Maj John Nichols, and bequeathed by him to his dau Ann “now wife of said Granbery” 100a. July 13, 1704. Test’ Nath’l Wilder, Matthew Spivey, Sarah Spivey, Judith Nichols.
  • Ann Granbery of Nansemond Co, appointed “brother Matthew Spivey” to act as her attorney, July 15, 1704. (As Judith, mother of Matthew, will 1718, m 2d Nichols, as before seen, Ann was probably a “step-sister” of Matthew Spivey, Jr.)
  • Matthew Spivey was J. P. in Norfolk Co Va, July 16, 1704.
  • George Spivey, obtained a grant in Nansemond Co Va, Oct 22, 1666, “near the head of Southern Branch,” and John Spivey had a grant Oct 28, 1697, “at a place called ‘planters delight’ ” on E. side of Southern Branch.
  • Thomas Spivey of Chowan Co N. C. deeded land, 150a to his son Jacob, on west side of Catherine’s Creek (Gates Co), and he with wife Mary conveyed 100a on South side of said Creek, unto Moses Hill, Apl 18, 1720. William Hill of Chowan, was “son-in-law” of Thomas Spivey, and had son Moses Hill, wife Mary. (Will Chowan, p 10, 1mo 1750/1.) Thomas Spivey, & wife Mary, sold 200a on North side of Catherine’s Creek, called “Meherrin Neck” unto—James Griffin, July 15, 1717. Test’ Abram Spivey, Thomas Rountree.
  • The will of Thomas Spivey, p in Chowan Co. Feb 7, 1729/30. Sons: Benjamin, Jacob, Thomas, & William.
  • Benjamin Spivey of N. C. sold to John Edwards of “Lower pish” Isle of Wight Co, Va, “for 16 barrels of Tarr, and 600 lbs of Tob” Land in Lower parish, which was part of a patent for 1800a, patented in 1680. Seal April 20 1723.
  • Thomas Spivey made a deed of gift to his son Benjamin, 496a “as per Patent to me” on N. E. side of Katherine’s Creek. 1715/6.
  • George Spivey, conveyed 100a, on Catherine’s Creek, unto Thomas Walton Jr. Dec 4, 1734. Test’ Benj Spivey.
  • Littleton Spivey made a deed in Chowan Co, to John Benton, conveying 40a “where John Spivey, father of said Littleton, lately lived, which he bequeathed to Littleton, & John Spivey his sons.” Jane Spivey of Nansemond Co made a deed soon after this, and she is thought to be wife of John dec’d.
  • Champion Spivey was dead, 1794, division names the following children: John, Dorothy, Delia, & Rachel.
  • Sarah & Zilpha Spivey were dau’s of Palatiah Walton of Chowan Co. Nov 6, 1776.

MAUDLIN

  • Ezekiel Maudlin, first in Perquimans, came from London, according to family tradition. This name does not appear on any of the records of the Lower counties in Virginia, neither do the Quaker records show a person of this name. So the opinion is advanced, that he came straight from England to Perq, or landed first in New England, where he m Hannah Nicholson (d of Christopher, & Hannah —, b Mch 4, 1667). It is positively known that Christopher Nicholson came to Perq from New Eng, where he had already m Hannah Rednap. The names & ages of his children are recorded in Berkeley Par Reg, but his marriage is not mentioned.
  • Ezekiel Maudlin, & wife Hannah, issue: 1 Edward, b Feby 11, 1695—2 Ezekiel, b April 2, 1698—3 Mary, b Mar 2, 170-1—4 Elizabeth, b Nov 20, 1703—5 Sarah, b April 28, 1706. Ezekiel Maudlin died Mch 16, 1705-6. (According to the Roman Calendar.)
  • Hannah (née Nicholson) m 2d Charles. Her will p in Perq Co, July 1752, names son: Edward Moudlin, dau’s Elizabeth White, Sarah Perry, & Ann Cox (son-in-law Robert Cox), gr-sons: John Moulin, & John Cox, gr-dau Mary Moulin (d of John).
  • Ezekiel Maudlin grt for land in Perq, June 20, 1703, which he conveyed to Timothy Clare, April 26, 1705. (Deed book F, No 60.) He evidently died intestate, as no will appears in Perq, made by him.
  • Hannah Maudlin (above) was 2d wife of Samuel Charles Sr, he had for 1st wife Elizabeth, by whom he had issue, d Elizabeth. (See Charles record in this book.)
  • Ezekiel (2) Maudlin, m Hannah Toms (d of Joshua, & Sarah née Gosbey, b June 6, 1706), issue: 1 Jeremiah, b Aug 21, 1725—2 Joshua, b Apl 19, 1727—3 Edward, b Apl 7, 1735. Hannah wife of (2) Ezekiel m 2d Edmund Chancey. (2) Ezekiel Maudlin, in his will p in Perq April 17, 1732, names sons: Jeremiah, Joshua, & James, wife Hannah. His son Edward is not named for some reason, & as Edward b April 7, 1735, was born 2 years after the death of sd Ezekiel, we do not see how he could have been one of his sons. He is certainly given in Berkeley Par Reg, however, as “son of Ezekiel, & Hannah.” (Probably the 2d Ezekiel & Hannah Toms.)
  • Sarah Maudlin was a legatee in the will of Samuel Charles, Mar 12, 1727-8. (3) Ezekiel Maudlin, is thought to have m 1st Hannah — & had Edward, b April 7, 1735; he m 2d Mary — issue: 1 Elizabeth, b July 13, 1738—2 Sarah, b March 20, 1741. Ezekiel Maudlin was “Overseer of the Roads” in the district of John Perisho Apl 1740. The division of Ezekiel (2) Maudlin Est, 1737, shows Hannah as his wife, sons: Jeremiah, Joshua, & Thomas.
  • Among Tithables; May 25, 1743, Edward Modling, Edward Jr, Wm Modling, & Ezekiel Maudlin. Tithables 1768; Mary Modlin, & son Ezekiel, Edmund Modlin, Jacob Elliott & Joseph Draper.
  • Hannah Chancey, & Thomas Weeks, made petition to the Court, Jan 1736, for a division of the Est of Ezekiel Maudlin Dec’d.
  • Mary Maudlin widow of Ezekiel, July 1746, John Maudlin petition to sell perishable Est of sd dec’d. Jan 1754.
  • Edward Maudlin, in a deed Oct 15, 1739, called Thomas Nicholson “cousin.” He bought of James Henby Jan 24, 1735, 150a of land, “near the head of Vosses Creek.”
  • (1) Edward Maudlin (Ezekiel (1) m Mary — issue: 1 John, b May 26, 1718—2 William, b Feb 27, 1721-2. He was dead Jan 19, 1754, when John Maudlin petitioned the Court for liberty, to sell pt of his Est, which was done Feb 7, 1754.
  • (1) Thomas Maudlin, will Perq, Nov 16, 1758, names wife, Sarah, son Jeremiah, brother Edmund Chancey, father-in-law John Clayton, bro-in-law Richard Clayton.
  • (4) Ezekiel Maudlin, m Ann Stafford, Sept 2, 1743, Sec Thos Stafford. (Mar bonds Perq Co.)
  • (1) John Maudlin m Hannah (dau-in-law of John Stokes, will 1772, Perq Co) issue: (twins) Joseph, & Mary, b Jan 26, 1742/3—2 John (2) b Mch 1, 1745.
  • John Maudlin moved from Pasq, to Perq Co, 17, 3mo 1787, with children: Hannah, Elizabeth, Jesse, Joseph, Charles, William, Pleasant, & Mary. (Pasq Mo Meeting.)
  • John Modlin moved from Perq, to Back Creek, Randolph Co, date not known.
  • Joshua Maudlin Planter, Court 1755.
  • Edward Maudlin m Sarah Ashley, widow, before July 1745, when an Order of Court was rendered them, to sell Est, & divide with the Orphans.
  • (1) William Maudlin, will Perq, p Oct 1774, wife Martha, Sons: Miles, Thomas, Jacob & Micajah, dau’s Elizabeth, Martha, brother John. Ex.
  • (1) Gideon Maudlin, m Mary Mullen (d of Abraham) & had issue, see his will Perq p Jan 1777.
