THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

LUKE LAMB

In the name of God Amen! I LUKE LAMB of Camden County and the State of North Carolina being of sound mind & memory, blessed be to God do this 28th day of December 1820 make & publish this my Last Will and Testament in the manner following that is to say, I leave the use of the land that I bought of BUNT?, Gale, Ferebee, & Jinkins as I have divided it to my Daughter PEGGY ETHERIDGE for & during her natural life and no longer after her death I give the sd. land to the heirs of her own body begotten..

ITEM: I leave the use of the land I bought of Simons & Jarvis as I have divided it to my daughter LYDIA DOZIER during her natural life and no longer after her death I give the sd. Lands to the heirs of her own body.

ITEM: I leave the land that I bought of John Williams called Biges to my two Grand Children TULLY DOZIER & LOVEY McBRIDE to be equally divided when TULLY arrives to lawful age but if either should die non age the survivor shall inherit and I give the said lands after their death to the heirs of their own body but if they should leave no heirs of their own body I give the said lands to my own children that is then living.

ITEM: I leave the use of the land I bought of Noah Sawyer… Sawyer or Demsey Sawyer and part of the land I bought of Enoch Sawyer to my daughter CLOE HERRING during her natural life and no longer and after her death I give the said lands to the male heirs of her own body forever, and I give my right of the third of Iramans? Sawyer widows thirds to William Herring forever, and I leave my Daughter CLOE HERRING three negroes Moses, Joe, and Easter during her natural life & no longer & then to the heirs of her own body.

ITEM: I leave the use of the land bought of Robert & Griffith Gregory to my daughter SALLY DOZIER, as it is bounded by John Lamb and others during her natural life & no longer & then I give the said land to the male heirs of her own body, and I give my said Daughter one negro girl Dinah. I leave the use of the land bought of Abner Lamb on the west side of the Great Ditch to my daughter PHOEBE DOZIER during her natural life and no longer & then I give the said lands to the heirs of her own body lawfully begotten, and I leave the use of two negroes Lamb and Luke.

ITEM: I give to my son ABNER LAMB that part of the Lake land that joins Gideons heirs & CLOE HERRINGS from the canal to the backline & part of the Creek Swamp to the mill run, and three negroes, Robin, Isaac & Jemy  my still & articles belonging to making of cyder and my wearing clothes.

ITEM: I give all the land I bought from Abner Lamb on the east side of the Great Ditch and five acres of the land I bought Godfrey binding Abner Lamb 50 acres that he bought at auction to my Grand Son ISAAC GREGORY.

ITEM: I give my grandson MARK GREGORY half the new survey on Aronouse Creek Swamp and the land I bought of Demsey Burgess to him & his heirs forever.

ITEM: I give to my granddaughter MARY GREGORY the two children that the wench I gave her before she died. I give my daughter POLLY FERREL two Negro men Timothy & George. I give GIDEON LAMB‘s two sons WILSON & GIDEON all the lake land that is not given & half the Creek Swamp to the run of the Mill forever. I leave the use of the Negro Reuben, Cloe & children and her Increase & the girl Cloe that I lately bought for my granddaughter, LUCY SPRUEL during her natural life & no longer, and at her death I give the said negroes to such children as she may have living at that time. But if my said Grand Daughter LUCY SPRUEL should die without child or children living at her death, I give the said negroes to my own children that may be living at that time. And I appoint my son ISAAC LAMB & his Executors guardians to my Grand child LUCY SPRUEL, with respect to the property given to her I am willing and agreed that BAILEY SPRUEL shall keep the said negroes in his possession free from charge for the same as long as my said Grand Daughter LUCY’s guardian hereby appointed shall think fit & no longer he the said Spruel supporting & educating my said Grand Child in the time & he the said Spruel shall under no pretence whatsoever remove the said negroes out of this County. And I hereby nominate my two Sons ISAAC LAMB & ABNER LAMB executors to this my Last Will & Testament the day and date above written.

Wrote by my own hand, the gift I gave George to my Daughter POLLY, I want him valued & put with her part & the balance to be given to her in notes & money.

These two additions were acknowledged before us as part of this Will.

I LUKE LAMB not intending to revoke or alter any part of my Will otherwise as hereafter named, do make & publish this codicil as part of my Last Will & Testament.

I give my cash, notes & other small property not given away in the body of my will, but given to my said Sons ISAAC LAMB, JOHN LAMB and Daughter FERRILL share & share alike & my will is that the boy George given to my said Daughter POLLY FERRELL in the body of my will be valued at Four Hundred dollars & come into this division & be a part of her share & to make her share together with said valuation equal to the share of my Son ISAAC LAMB, or the share of my Son JOHN LAMB and it is also my will that Boy Sandy for which my Son ISAAC LAMB has a bill of sale be valued at Three Hundred dollars & be a part of his share in said division.

The money I sold the two negroes for say? The negroes I gave in the body of my will to Grand Daughter MARY GREGORY now PALMER I give to my executors forever in trust to be laid out in the purchase of real estate at their discretion to be conveyed the use to the said MARY PALMER during her natural life & no longer & the to the heirs lawfully begotten on her body forever. The sum is Five Hundred & Fifty dollars out of which my said executors to retain for their troubell in buying said land & making said conveyances.

April 5, 1822

In the name of God Amen! I THOMAS FERRILL being weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God for it do this 5th day of April One Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty Two, make, ordain, constitute and appoint this my Last Will & Testament in manner and form as follows.

First of all I give to my beloved Wife SALLY FERRILL the use of all my lands during her life or widowhood and after her death or marriage to be divided between my two Sons WILLIAM FERRILL and THOMAS FERRILL to say WILLIAM FERRILL to have the piece of land I purchased of ANN BELL together with all my land on the west side of the branch and all my lands in the east side of the branch to my Son THOMAS FERRILL.

Item. I give the use of all my chattle property to my beloved Wife SALLY FERRILL during her life or widowhood and at her death or marriage after paying all my just debts to be equally divided between my three Daughters SUSANNAH FERRILLPEGGY FERRILL, and MARY FERRILL.

Last of all I make ordain and appoint my beloved Wife SALLY FERRILL and loving Son WILLIAM FERRILL Executors to this my Last Will and Testement.

CALEB GRAY (1823 Will)

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

CALEB GRAY

August 28, 1823

In the name of God Amen! I CALEB GRAY of the State of North Carolina, Camden County being of sound & perfect mind & memory blessed be God do this 28th day of August 1823. make & publish this my Last Will & Testament in manner following that is to say.

I leave the use of my maner plantation to my Loving Wife MEKEL GRAY during her natural life it being land whereon I now live containing forty three acres be the same more or less, binding on DEMSEY GREGORY’S, PETER FORBES heirs land and Deep Branch.

I also leave the use of all the remainder of my land to my loving Wife MEKEL GRAY during her widowhood or life for the supporting of my children. My will that the above land only half to be attended in a year in each tract & to be shifted every year.

I also leave the use of as much of my perishable estate as my Wife MEKEL GRAY needs for the supporting of my children during her widowhood or life & no longer.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son JOSHUA GRAY one tract of land I bought of THOMAS STAPLES formerly called the SIKES Tract containing twenty four & half acres be the same more or less binding JOHN FERRELL, WILLIAM ETHERIDGE, and JOHN BAMARY(?) (BARRARY?) and the heirs of JAMES GREGORY to him & his heirs forever and the said JOSHUA GRAY is to have posesion at the death or marriage of his Mother and the said JOSHUA GRAY is bound to pay unto my two Daughters POLLY JEAN GRAY fifty dollars apiece for their interest in said land.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son BAILEY GRAY & my Daughter SUCKY GRAY one tract of land I bought of WILLIS UPTON to be equally divided between them beginning at the main road thence runing across the plantation so as to make an equal division of clear a land also beginning at main road thence across the plantation so as to make an equal division of cleared land, also beginning at main road thence running across the wood so as to make each hare an equal share to them & their heirs forever. The said BAILEY GRAY & SUCKY GRAY is gave posession of the said land when the said BAILEY GRAY comes to the age of twenty one years. Also the said BAILEY BRAY & SUCKY GRAY is bound to pay unto POLLY GRAY fifty dollars & JEAN GRAY fifty dollars for their interest in said land.

If my Wife MEKEL GRAY should die or marry before the said BAILEY GRAY should arrive at lawful age the rent of said land shall go to my two Daughters POLLY & JEAN GRAY.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my two Daughters POLLY & JEAN GRAY after the death or marriage of my Wife all the perishable part of my estate which my Wife held at that time. Also I give to my two Daughters POLLY & JEAN GRAY all the perishable part of my estate which my Wife MEKEL do not need at this time to them & their heirs forever. Also I give all my crop to POLLY & JEAN GRAY after taking out my Wife’s & family’s one year provisions, also my debts either due by notes or accts to them & their heirs forever. The above property to be sold on a credit of six months. If POLLY or JEAN should die under twenty one the survivor shall their legacies.

Item. I give & bequeath unto my Daughter SALLY GRAY one tract of land which I now live on that I bought of MALACHI W. BOUSHALL, binding DEMSEY GREGORY, PETER FORBES heirs & Deep Branch, containing forty three acres be the same more or less to her & her heirs forever.

And I hereby make & ordain my worth friend BAILEY BARCO Executor of this my Last Will & Testament in witness whereof I the said CALEB GRAY to this my Last Will & Testament set my hand & seal the day & year above written.

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

August 16, 1822

The nuncupative Will of WILLOUGHBY JONES dec’d. made & declared in his Last sickness in his own habitation & dwelling house—-wherein he had resided for several years previous to his death. In the presence of JOHN FERRELL and DANIEL TUTTLE, who was both specially required to bear witness thereto by the Testator himself on the night of the Sixteenth day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty Two, which was reduced to writing on the 19th day of the above stated month.

In words as follows which was spoken by the said Testator aforesaid in the presence of the afore named persons who was specially required by the testator to bear witness of the same—-namely.

It is my will & desire that my beloved Wife shall have all my estate of every denomination whatsoever, after paying all my just debts,

Also It is my wish and desire that my worthy friend JOSEPH BROWN should take my business in hand & see to it as I think he is most best acquainted with my affairs the same being published and declared by the said WILLOUGHBY JONES the testator as his Last Will and Testament in the presence of us who was present at the time of the testator making declaration thereof.

August 20, 1822

In the name of God Amen! I THOMAS LAMB being of sound and perfect memory, blessed be God do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following Thath is to say—–

Item. I give and bequeath to my Brother ISAAC LAMB the remainder of the plantation whereon I now live which I gave GIDEON LAMB a and for part of the same tract all joining his land to him and his heirs forever.

I also desire of my Brother ISAAC LAMB if Dina my cook should live longer than I, for him to give her four or five acres of the land that I gave him and build her a house thereon and give her her wheells and chards(?) and one years provisions.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Sister MARY FERRELL one negro girl named Tular

Item. I give and bequeath to my Brother JOHN LAMB the tract of land that I bought of NASH to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to SAMUEL ETHERIDGE Son of my Sister PEGGY ETHERIDGE a negro named Smith to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Nephew CORNELIUS LAMB Son of CORNELIUS LAMB a negro named Tom to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Sister MARY FERRELL’S Son MARK GREGORY one negro man named Mustasshee to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my Nephew DEMPSEY GREGORY one negro man named March to him and heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Nephew ISAAC GREGORY one negro boy named Dorsey to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my four Nieces NANCY, PHEBEE, CLARKY and MARY my Sister MARY FERRELL’S Daughters all my real and personal estate except my boy Glascow after my just debts are paid and also the note which my Nephew HENRY N. LAMB gave to me for two hundred dollars and thirty nine and a half or two hundred thirty nine and a half dollars—— to them the aforesaid four Nieces, for ISAAC GREGORY to have the mannagement of the same and also to deal out the property to the aforesaid persons as he may think proper.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Nephew HENRY N. LAMB the note he gave me in part payment for ??? sum amounting to two hundred thirty nine dollars and fifty cents payable in promissory notes and also the land which I loaned(?) of him, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Nephew JOHN FERRELL one negro boy call Glascow to him and his heirs and assigns forever.l

And I likewise nominate and appoint my two brothers ISAAC LAMB and JOHN LAMB Executors to this my Last Will and Testament This the 20th day of Agust 1822

This Last Will and Testament of THOS. LAMB dec’d was exhibited in open Court by JNO. LAMB the Executor thereof and it appearing that the issue Dem Savit Velnor(?) had been decided an favour of the Exrs. And devisers in the Superior Court Spring Term as appears by the record of the decision issued in the minute Docket of this Court, the same was proved in due form of law by H.N. LAMB the subscribing witness thereto and the hand writing of BALEY SPRUILL the other subscribing witness was proved in due form of law by H.N. LAMB and JAMES W. DUKE is appearing to the Court that the said BALEY SPRUELL being dead. Ordered that the said will be recorded and that letters testamentary issue. JOHN LAMB the Executor appeared in open Court and qualified as Exrs. To the said will in due form of law.
