GPS: 36 15 52.4 N 078 58 003.8 W
NOTES: Duncan Cameron never lived in Person Co but his landholdings here may have exceeded 8000 acres. 6500 acres lay along the bottomland of the south and north branches of the Flat River. To find out more about the Cameron family visit the web site for Historic Stagville.

Graves:
At this point, no carved tombstones have been found.
One unreadable metal funeral home marker was found. It is thought to be the last burial there, maybe around 1956. The research on death certificates has not been done yet.

About 200 burials are marked by fieldstones. Some have deeper depressions than others.
Another 200 have obvious depressions but no (as yet discovered) fieldstones.

Finally, shallow depressions, spaces that appear level in line with obvious grave rows, and other areas that appear to contain burials could number from 200 to 1000. This surveyer cannot say with any certainty and would hope that the wonderful research being done by the Stagville Center, using Dr Sydney Nathans' Cameron slave database, will eventually answer this question.

__________

John Draper Clayton Cemetery

Location: Olive Hill Community
Directions: private property
Survey: Ed Clayton on March 3, 2004
Condition: abandoned

This is a large cemetery, now abandoned. The last known burial was that of Elizabeth Clayton Long in 1928 (known through oral family history). Only three stones have inscriptions. Another stone appears to have enclosed a photograph originally but the photograph is no longer present. A large number of fieldstones mark graves in this cemetery. Although an exact count was not done as part of the survey, there may be as many as 50 graves that are marked by field stones.

Graves:
Information outside of parentheses has been transcribed from tomb stones. Information inside parentheses is added commentary.

Three stones with legible inscriptions were found along with two other stones that were illegible.

  • JOHN D / CLAYTON / B MARCH 4 / 1808 / D APRIL 1893 / (John Draper Clayton. The "stone" that marks this grave appears to be a homemade concrete marker. The inscription appears to have been made in the marker at the time the marker was created. This marker is positioned directly in front of a field stone as if the grave was originally marked only by a field stone with the homemade marker being added later. See photographs above.)

  • A. Y. Clayton / Born / Sept 14, 1829 / Died / July 1, 1901 / His toils are past this work is done / He fought the fight, the victory won / (Eldest of 16 children of John Draper Clayton and Elizabeth Clayton.)

  • James T Long / Co E / 35 NC Inf / CSA

  • (One grave is marked by a small homemade monument that at one time held a photograph behind glass. The photograph is gone and no identification remains.)

  • (One grave is marked by a rock that has illegible inscriptions.)

  • With the thought that the following information may be of use to Clayton researchers, the following information is provided. Please be aware that this information is not supported by any physical evidence in this cemetery. The table at the bottom of this page is also useful in understanding the location of the graves of the children of John Draper Clayton.
No stones were found but the following graves are presumed to be in this cemetery based on the claims of some researchers.

    1. (Elizabeth M. "Polly" Clayton. m:04 Nov 1828  Unmarked, but she is presumed to be buried in this cemetery. First wife of John Draper Clayton.)

    2. (Elizabeth "Puss" Long, b:18 Jan 1846  d:13 Nov 1918. Wife of James T. Long. m:08 Mar 1866   Although there is no stone for Elizabeth Clayton Long, she is known to be buried here based on the oral history in my family. Several of my aunts recall the funeral procession passing their home on the way to this cemetery for her burial. Her death certificate is filed in the Person County, NC, Register of Deeds Office as #5-288.)

    3. (Marcella Carver, the first wife of Allen Yancey Clayton, is presumed to be buried here with her husband. They were married 31 Jan 1854.  A. Y. Clayton's second wife was Martha Tillman. They were married 10 Feb 1861.)

    4. (Unmarked, but presumed to be buried in this cemetery: John Anderson Clayton. b:21 Jan 1838  d:30 Dec 1858)

    5. (Unmarked, but presumed to be buried in this cemetery: Marion Thomas Clayton. This name was also used for a younger child of John Draper Clayton. b:18 May 1839  d: Jun 1840)

    6. (Unmarked, but presumed to be buried in this cemetery: Alexander Jackson Clayton. b: 05 Aug 1844 also a child of John Draper Clayton.)

    7. (In addition, there are several dozen graves marked only by field stones. Most of these are arranged in orderly groups or rows. Many appear to have a stone marking both the head and the foot of the grave.)

I have not field checked these directions nor have I actually visited the cemetery (yet). Based on the location on the topographic map, I suspect that this cemetery is not adjacent to the road and thus on private property. Note that the former Atlantic and Danville Railroad followed on the North side of this portion of Cunningham Road from Semora to Cunningham.

    Spelling - Cunningham or Cuningham?

I stumbled upon the question of the proper spelling of the surname. The WPA survey spells the surname as "Cunningham." Other sources, such as the Heritage of Person County and Sturat Wright's Historical Sketch of Person County also use Cunningham, however, the ownership of the property is listed as Meriwether Cuningham Trustee.

    Larry Brandon Post:
Larry Brandon's post to the Person County Message Board on March 8, 2001 provides background information about the Cunningham Store. The entire post is repeated here:

Alexander Cuningham of Petersburg, Va (1776 -1849) was the owner of Cunningham Store in Person County. His father was also named Alexander Cuningham and was from Edinburgh, Scotland. He ran a wholesale merchandise business in Petersburg, Va with his brother Richard. and speculated in land in many states. He imported goods from England for distribution to retailers in the southeast. In 1814 He married Mary (Patsey) Wilson (1792-1886) daughter of John Wilson who built Dans Hill near Danville, Va. In the early 1820's he opened Cunningham's Store along the border with Halifax County, Va and Person County, NC. He built his home called Waverly near the store was on the mainline of the stagecoach route from Petersburg, Va to Hillsborough, NC. In the late 1800s it was the location of the train stop on the Norfolk, Va to Danville, Va rail line. It also served as the post office for the area till 1908 when Alton, Va became the post office. Alexander and his son John Wilson Cuningham (born Petersburg, Va 1820- 1887) built up the plantation to include 8000 acres and became one of the wealthiest planters in the area. He owned at one time 193 slaves. The Cuningham home called Waverly still exists on Cuningham Road in Person County along with the cemetery where Alexander Cuningham and 7 generations are buried. Waverly was built from 1824 to 1834. The chapel on the grounds of Waverly was used by the Episcopal Church and by travelers passing on the stage line.

Summary of holdings: Cunningham, John Wilson, 1820-1887, Papers, 1854-1869, 180 items.
Agriculturalist and state Democratic Party leader, from Person County, N.C.
Chiefly letters to Cunningham from Calvin Henderson Wiley (1819-1887), a classmate at the University of North Carolina and apparently the real author of Cunningham's political speeches, and copies of political writings. Also included are Cunningham's records as executor of the estate of Dr. Matthew M. Harrison of Brunswick County, Va.

John S. Cunningham - Waverly and Woodlawn
John S. Cunningham, a later owner of Waverly, also purchased an impressive house in Halifax County, Virginia. The following is copied from: www.oldhalifax.com/county/Woodlawn.htm

On March 13, 1900, through her substitute trustee, R. E. Lee Marshall, Henrietta Carolyn Coleman Snowden sold the two tracts comprising Woodlawn to John S. Cunningham of Person County, North Carolina, for $6104.13.

Totaling 939.34 acres, Mrs. Snowden reserved 1/4 (one-fourth) of an acre, "the Coleman family burying ground, in the garden at the Woodlawn dwelling house, and now enclosed with a brick wall.." together with rights of ingress and egress to and from the cemetery at all times.

Mr. Cunningham was a member of one of Person County's most prominent families, natives of Edinburgh, Scotland, who emigrated first to Petersburg and then moved to North Carolina. The eldest of nine children he was married on June 5, 1889 to Otelia Carrington, daughter of Col. Henry A. Carrington, Clerk of Court of Charlotte County and a descendant of Col. Paul Carrington of Mulberry Hill.

Mr. Cunningham was an absentee landlord, so-to-speak, over Woodlawn while he owned it. He continued to make his home in Durham, N. C., and at his ancestral home, Waverly Plantation, in Person County.
