History of Lea's Chapel

Two sources provide information about Lea's Chapel Church. Chapel on South Hyco: the story of Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church, Person County, North Carolina : 1750-2000 AD by Ben Lacy Rose (Richmond, Va. : B.L. Rose, 2000) was written and published for the 250th anniversary of the church. The first volume of Person County Heritage also includes an article about Lea's Chapel (#73).

Graves:

The article in Person County Heritage provides this information about the cemetery:

The first burial at Lea's Chapel was that of an unknown person who happened to be traveling throughout this part of the county. He suddenly became ill and stopped at Major Lea's home at Chapel Bridge near the church. He died before he could tell anyone his name. The lea family found on him no identification papers nor anything concerning his relatives. He was buried under an old oak tree on the Lea's Chapel church grounds, an unidentified stranger with no tombstone to mark his passing. The oldest tombstone that now stands at Lea's Chapel is that of James Cochran who died in 1807 after serving as a North Carolina Congressman.

The list of graves below is from the book Chapel on South Hyco: the story of Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church, Person County, North Carolina : 1750-2000 AD. The list was scanned and OCR converted but has not been proof read. Dick Long Family Cemetery
Location: Ceffo
Directions: Semora Road (NC 57) to Concord-Ceffo Road (SR 1340) at Concord. Right on Concord-Ceffo Road. Concord-Ceffo Road to McGees Mill Road (SR 1337). Cemetery is in the woods behind the house across McGees Mill Road from the stop sign at the Concord-Ceffo Road and McGees Mill Road intersection.
Survey by: Barry Whitfield, 2009

This graveyard is in a bad state of disrepair. It is over grown and many of the headstones are broken and lying on the ground. There may be some that are completely covered with leaves that I missed.

The WPA Survey, names this graveyard as the Dick Long Family Cemetery. However, some of the death certificates of those buried there, names the graveyard as The Jessie Rainie Cemetery and others The Long Cemetery.  Jessie owned the farm for a time, he was the son of Richard H. Long.   I believe this grave is on the farm of Richard H. Long.

A number of the people buried there are descendants of Richard H. Long:

William B Long (son)
Robert Davis Long (son)
Susan Dixon (daughter-in-law)
Green Jefferson Clayton (son-in-law)
Chestina T. Evans (granddaughter)
William M. Evans (grandson-in-law)
James T. Evans (great grandson)
Nora E. Evans (great granddaughter)
Myrtle Evans (great granddaughter)
R. L. King (grandson-in-law)
John M. Long (son)
Mary Fannie Dillihey (daughter-in-law)

Buried in graveyard

Based on Death Certificates:

Mary Fannie Dillihey wife of John M. Long, born 5 Feb 1849, Died 21 Apr 1922. Death certificate lists her place of burial as Jessie Long Family Cemt.

John M. Long son of Richard H. Long and Arrilla Mann, born 18 Dec 1849, Died 18 Sep 1928. Death certificate lists his place of burial as Long Burying Ground.

Based on the WPA Survey, no headstones found:

Flem D. Long Cemetery

Location: Maurice Daniels Road.
Directions: Semora Road to Long's Store Road. Left on Long's Store Road to Maurice Daniels Road. Cemetery is on right. In the graphic below, Long's Store is green; Flem Long Cemetery is blue.
GPS Coordinates: 36° 25' 00"N, 79° 04' 49"W (WGS84/NAD83)
Topographic Map

This family cemetery is well maintained and visible from the road. There is a drive from the road making the cemetery easy to visit. It appears that at one time it was adjacent to the road. The location of the present paved road has been shifted, but the original road location next to the cemetery is obvious. The cemetery had an entrance flanked by boxwoods (on the right of the photograph above.)

I have called this the Flem D. Long Cemetery because what was Flem Long's home is almost within sight of the cemetery. The sign uses the name "Long Family Cemetery 1908."

This cemetery was surveyed in February 2004 by Ed Clayton. Yvonne A. Bennett transcribed the inscriptions below from the photographs. Thank you Yvonne! You can browse the photographs of the Flem Long Cemetery.

Tips on reading the inscription listings:

  • Comments or added information is in parentheses. Information not in parentheses is from a stone.
  • A slash ( / ) usually designates a new line on the stone.
