This Indenture made the tenth day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred & thirty Eight between JESSE A. ALSTON of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina of the one part & HENRY SHEARIN of the County of Warren & State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that I the said JESSE A. ALSTON for & in consideration of the sum of Eighteen hundred dollars to me in hand paid by him the said HENRY SHEARIN the receipt I do hereby acknowledge hath bargained set over & delivered unto him the said HENRY SHEARIN all that tract or parcel of land lying & being in the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina on the waters of Hawtree Swamp lying on both sides of said Swamp & bounded as follows Beginning at an old stump on the bank of said Swamp in SOLOMON HAWKINS line then N 16 W 80 poles to a post oak then East 126 poles to a hickory & maple on the bank of said Swamp thence North 21 W 46 poles along JAMES GILBERT's line (now JOHN LEE's) to a black oak stump to a black oak stump; thence West along BRINKLEY's line (now ROBERT B. DANIELs')thence 112 poles to a red oak in JOHN RICHARDSON's line then South 245 poles along said RICHARDSON's line to a pin in his line thence E 42 poles to a pine his said RICHARDSON's corner thence along his line So 80 poles to a pine WILLIAM IRBY's corner thence N 70 E 228 poles to a red oak MATTHEWS corner thence a marked line to a white oak formerly KIMBALL's line thence along marked line to hickories thence to a pine & post oak pointers thence to a pine in slash HAWKINS corner including the land that I JESSE A. ALSTON bought of BENJAMIN KIMBALL (reference to said KIMBALLs Deed will make this more fully appear) thence North to the first Station containing five hundred & thirty acres be the same more or less together with all waters ways woods & underwoods & every other thing pertaining thereunto said land belonging unto him the said HENRY SHEARIN & his heirs forever. And I the said JESSE A. ALSTON do warrant & forever defend the right & title of said land unto him the said HENRY SHEARIN & his heirs & assigns forever against the claim of myself & against the claim or claims of all & every person or persons whatever. As witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this day & date aforesaid.

Know all men by these presents that I, JOSEPH J. ALSTON of the County of Franklin and State of North Carolina for & in consideration of the love, good will, & affection which I have & bear towards my loving son JOHN H. ALSTON of the County of Halifax & State aforesaid have given & granted and by these presents do freely give & grant unto the said JOHN H. ALSTON his heirs & assigns thirteen Negroes, to wit, STEPHEN, ABRAM, ABY, NED, BOB, EPHRAIM, WELDON, SUCKY, CELAH, PAT, CHARLOTTE, LUCINDA & MARY. All of the aforesaid Negroes the said JOHN H. ALSTON has now in his possession. To have & to hold from this day forward together with their future increase to the only proper use & behoof of him the said JOHN H. ALSTON his heirs & assigns forever.
In witness whereof I the aforesaid JOSEPH J. ALSTON have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this fourth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & twenty.

Received of JOS. JOHN WILLIAMS four hundred silver dollars for a Negro woman SAL & her child CHINA which Negro I bought of JAMES YARBORO last Sept & which Negro I do by these presents acknowledge to have sold bargained & delivered to said WILLIAMS & I do & will hereby forever warrant & defend the right & title of said Negroes to said WILLIAMS against the claim or claims of any person claiming by or through me.
As witness my hand and seal this 31st Jany 1805.

EMANUEL ASH to JAMES EVANS-1860

This Indenture made this 1st day September in the year of our Lord One Thousand and eight hundred and Sixty between EMANUEL ASH of the County of Halifax and State of North Carolina of the one part and JAMES EVANS of the County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said EMANUEL ASH for and in consideration of the sum of Two hundred and Seventy five dollars to him in hand paid by the said JAMES EVANS at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof the said EMANUEL ASH doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said JAMES EVANS his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County and State aforesaid bounded as follows, Beginning at a small Sweet Gum on the East side of a small branch thence North 89½E 69 poles to 3 maples thence with a new marked line North 176 poles to 2 pines 2 sourwood and 1 Black Gum thence 89½ West 69 poles thence South 176 poles to the first station containing by survey Seventy five acres be the same more or less to have and to hold the said land and premises and every part and parcel thereof to the said JAMES EVANS his heirs and assigns forever and the said EMANUEL ASH doth on his part warrant and forever defend the title of the aforesaid tract of land against all claims whatsoever; in witness whereof the said EMANUEL ASH hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and date above written.

Know all men by these presents that I ELIZABETH ASHE of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina for & in consideration of the sum of two hundred and seventeen dollars & one third of a dollar currency of the United States to me in hand pd by JOSHUA COLE of the same County and State at or before the sealing & delivery of these presents the ret.[receipt] whereof I do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained & sold & by these presents do grant bargain & sell unto the sd JOSHUA COLE, his heirs Exrs & Admrs & assigns one female Negro Slave named POLLY about nine years old.
To have and to hold the said Negro Slave POLLY to the said JOSHUA COLE his Exrs Admrs & assigns forever. And I the said ELIZ'A ASHE for myself my heirs Exrs & Admrs the said Negro POLLY unto the said JOSHUA COLE his heirs Exrs Admrs & assigns against me the said ELIZ'A ASHE my Exrs & Admrs & against all & every other person or persons whomsoever, shall & will warrant & forever defend by these presents.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22nd day of April in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & five.

WILLIAM ATKINSON to JAMES EVANS -1754

T all People to whom these presents shall come Greeting:
Know ye that WILLIAM ATKINSON of Edgecombe County in the Province of North Carolina, Planter for and in consideration of the sum of ten pounds Virginia money to me in hand paid before the ensealing hereof well and truly paid by JAMES EVANS JUN'R of the Province & County of Edgecombe aforesaid the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge and myself there with fully satisfyed and contented and thereof and of every part and parcell thereof do exonerate acquit and discharge the said JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs Exors adminrs forever; and by these presents have given granted bargained, sold, aliened conveyed & confirmed and by these presents do freely fully and absolutely give grant bargain sell alien convey and confirm unto him the said JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs and assigns forever one certain parcel and tract of land situate lying and being in the Province and County of Edgecombe aforesaid containing by estimation Two hundred and twenty two acres be the same more or less bounded as followeth, beginning at a pine on POLLOCK's line, then to a red oak RICHARD LEWIS's corner then along his other line to his other corner white oak, then along his line to a hickory AARON ETHERIDGE's corner, then along his line to a red oak then to a white oak THOMAS THROWER's corner, then along hus line to two white oaks then to the first station. To have and to hold the said granted and bargained premises with all the appurtenances, priviledges, comodities to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining to the same parcel or tract of land to him the same JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs and assigns forever; To his and their only proper uses benefit and behoof forever; and I the said WILLIAM ATKINSON for me my heirs Exors and admins. do covenant promise and grant to and with the said JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs and assigns that before the ensealing hereof same the true sole and lawfull owner of the above bargained premises and am lawfully seized and possessed of the same in my own proper right as a good perfect and absolute estate of inheritance in fee simple and I have in myself good right full power and lawfull authority to grant bargain sell convey and confirm the said bargained premises in manner as above said; and that the said JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs and assigns shall and may from time to time and at all times forever hereafter by force and virtue of these presents lawfully peaceably and quietly have hold use occupy possess and enjoy the said demised and bargained premises with the appurtenances free and clear and freely and clearly acquitted exonerated and discharged of from all and all manner of former or other gifts grants bargains, sales leases, mortgages wills, intaits, joynitures dowers, judgements executions, incumbrances and extents; Furthermore I the said WILLIAM ATKINSON for myself my heirs Exors and adminrs &c covenant and engage the above demised premises to him the the said JAMES EVANS JUN'R his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims or demands of any person or persons whatsoever and forever hereafter do warrant secure and defend.
