Know all men by these presents that I, DARLING MABRY for in consideration of the
natural love & affection which I have & bear with my nephew GREEN MABRY & for
the further consideration of five Dollars to me in hand paid by the said GREEN
and also the additional consideration of the said GREEN paying all my just debts
I the said DARLING have given, granted, bargained, sold & conveyed & by these
presents do give grant, bargain sell & convey unto the said GREEN MABRY his
heirs & assigns forever the following Negro slaves, vizt, SARAH, ABRAHAM,
SIMON, DANIEL, NANCE & her children & NANCE & her children with their
increase reserving to myself a life estate in said Negroes. To have & to hold
the same unto the said GREEN MABRY his heirs & assigns forever. Witness my hand
& seal the 6th of April 1821.

& assigns forever one lot or parcel of land designated number sixty-four in the
plan of the town land out by the said DANIEL MASON & HENRY SMITH on the land by
them purchased of HAMPTON POWELL. To have and to hold all & singular the one lot
or parcel of ground & premises with all & singular the appurtenances thereunto
belonging or in anywise appertaining unto the said WILLIAM L. PANE his heirs &
assigns will forever warrant & defend by these presents. In witness whereof the
said DANIEL MASON & DANIEL MASON Agent for HENRY SMITH hath hereunto set their

One thousand Seven hundred and sixty one and in the first year of the
Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of
Great Britain France and Ireland King defender of the faith &c THOMAS
MATHIS SEN'R of Halifax County in the Province of North Carolina Planter
of the one part and JOHN RICHERSON JUN'R of the County and Province
aforesaid Planter of the other part witnesseth that the said THOMAS
MATHIS SEN'R for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty pounds
current money of Virginia to him in hand paid at and before the
ensealing and delivering of the receipt here of of the said THOMAS
MATHIS doth hereby acknowledge and thereof and therefore doth forever
quit and discharge the said JOHN RICHERSON his heirs Exors Adms and
assigns hath given granted bargained sold allowed and confirmed & by
these presents doth give grant sell and confirm to the said JOHN
RICHERSON his heirs and Successors forever a certain tract of land
containing to thirty five acres be the same or less lying and being in
the south side of Conoway Creek beginning on MR. HILLs line at a white
oak along the said HILLs line to a red oak on THOMAS MATHIS's line
thence North along the said MATHIS line to the creek thence down the sid
creek to the first station for the compliment as by a patent granted to
the said THOMAS MATHIS SEN'R fifth day of December Anno Dom 1761 first
year of our Reign with the reversion and reversions remainder and
remainders thereof and every part thereof to have and to hold the said
tract of land together with all houses orchards gardens ways woods and
underwoods water and water courses and all other appurtenances thereto
belonging to him the said JOHN RICHARSON his heirs and successors
forever and futher the THOMAS MATHIS doth covenant and agree and with
the said JOHN RICHERSON JUN'R his heirs and successors that the said
THOMAS MATHIS or at the demand of the said JOHN RICHERSON his heirs and
successors when it shall reasonably be advised and required. In witness

& six between JAMES MATTHEWS of the state of No. Carolina & County of
Halifax of the one part & ISHAM MATTHEWS of the County & State aforesaid
of the other part witnesseth that the said JAMES MATTHEWS for & in
consideration of one hundred pounds to me in hand paid by the said ISHAM
MATTHEWS & his receipt I hereby acknowledge hath bargain sold setover &
delivered unto the said ISHAM MATTHEWS all that tract or parcel of land

GID MATTHEWS & RICHARD MATTHEWS line nearly a East course to the bank of
said Fishing Creek, thence up the meanders courses of said Creek to a
dogwood BENJA KIMBELL corner, thence No 8 pole to a posimon bush on the
bank of the cleahold thence No 50 E 10 pole to a sweet gum bush thence
south 40 East 13 poles to a white oak on the banks of said Creek then up
the meanders courses of said Creek to the first station- It being part
of a tract of land surveyed by JAMES CONNER for JAMES MATTHEWS SENR on
the eleventh day of Feby 1757 containing one hundred & seventy five
acres more or less together with all woods water ways & underwoods and
every other previledge there unto said land belonging except one
previledge pathway BEN KIMBELL are to have through some part of the said
land to his mill & I sd JAMES MATTHEWS do warrant & forever defend the
rite & title of the above bargained land unto him the said ISHAM
MATTHEWS & his heirs forever against myself my heirs or any person

of Matagorda and State of Texas of the one part and STEPHEN HEDGEPETH of
the County of Halifax and State of North Carolina of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said THOS P. MATHEWS for and in consideration of the
sum of Forty dollars to him in hand paid by the said STEPHEN HEDGEPETH
the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and
sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said
STEPHEN HEDGEPETH a certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and
being in the County of Halifax and State of North Carolina on the waters
of Hawtree Creek adjoining the lands of said T P. MATHEWS, JOHN MABRY
and others containing fifty acres more or less and bounded as follows,

and to hold to the only proper use and behoof of him the said STEPHEN

defend the above bargain premises against the lawful claims or claims of

Eight hundred & seventeen between TIMOTHY MATTHEWS of the State of
Georgia Twiggs County one of the Excrs of JAMES MATTHEWS SEN. died,
formerly of Morgan County & said State of Georgia of the one part &
JOSIAH BRINKLEY & ISHAM of the state of North Carolina & County of
Halifax of the other part Witnesseth that the said JAMES SEN. decd. did
sell unto JOSIAH BRINKLEY & ISHAM MATTHEWS in his life & received five
hundred dollars on just payment for a certain tract of land lying in the
State of North Carolina Halifax County on Hawtree Creek beginning at a
pine on a slash SAMUEL HAWKINS corner then down the slash to Hawtree
Creek then down the Creek to an ash stump then N 16° W 80 poles to a
post oak then Et 126 poles to a hickory & maple on the bank of said
Creek then N 21 W 46 poles along JAMES GILBERT's line to a black oak
stump then W along DOWTs line 312 poles to a red oak in RICHARDSON's &
LEE's line to a pine LEE's corner then E 42 poles to a pine LEE's corner
then along his line S 80 poles to a pine WILLIAM ENBY's corner then N 70
E 228 poles to a red oak in KIMBALLS line then along his line to the
beginning containing five hundred acres more or less and I one of the
Exrs of said JAMES MATTHEWS decd have received three hundred & seventy
two dollars of the said JOSIAH BRINKLY & ISHAM MATTHEWS it being the
ballance due for said land.
I do therefore convey & transfer for the acres before mentioned all the
right that JAMES MATTHEWS SENR. decd had or to said premises at the time
of his death as far as I am authorised to convey as one of the exrs of
said JAMES MATTHEWS dec'd. As witness whereof I have set my hand the

These Indentures made this 23 day of October in the year of our Lord One
Thousand eight hundred & fifteen between myself & my Children, viz:
WINNY MILLS of the County of Halifax and State of North Carolina
Witnesseth that I the said WINNY MILLS gave & bequeath unto my Children
DANIEL, SILLER, WESLEY, & AUSTIN six head of cattle, eight head of hogs,
two beds & the residue of my property to have and to hold forever. I the
said WINNY MILLS are to have the use of these so long as do live, after
my decease the said property are to be equally divided between my
children as above mention. I the said WINNY MILLS is to be married in
the course of ten or fifteen day from this date above which I do not
consider that any of the above property are to be my husband's disposal
on to pay any debts that is now against him or any debt he may contract
after being man & wife.

This Indenture made the fifth day of May 1842 between ISHAM MILLS,
WILLIAM S. JENKINS & JOHN HOCKADAY all the County of Halifax & State of
North Carolina Witnesseth that whereas the said ISHAM MILLS stands
justly indebted to the said JOHN HOCKADAY in the sum of one hundred &
five dollars due by bond bearing date that theis day & account in favor
of MARCUS A. ALLEN to the amt of thirty five dollars or there near about
one judgment in favor of THOS. SHAW to the amt of forty five or fifty
dollars which he the said ISHAM MILLS honestly desires to secure & also
agree that the bond he owes MR. HOCKADAY to be paid of first & the
balance if any to be distributed equally the other named claims in
consideration thereof & in further consideration of the sum of one
dollar to him in hand paid by the said WILLIAM S. JENKINS before signing
sealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged the said ISHAM doth for himself his heirs & assigns give
grant bargain sell & deliver & by these presents hath given granted
bargained sold & delivered unto the said WILLIAM S. JENKINS his heirs &
assigns forever for the purpose herein after mentioned the following
property to wit, 1 tract of land where I now live containing thirty six
acres 2 horse my stock of cattle amounting to 6 in number & also my
stock of hogs & my household & kitchen furniture together with my corn &
fodder that I now has on hand & the present growing crop To have & to
hold the above property & every part thereof with all the rights &
privileges thereunto belonging free & clear from the lawful claim or
claims of all manner of persons whatsoever unto him the said WILLIAM S.
JENKINS his heirs & assigns forever in trust nevertheless that the said
WILLIAM S. JENKINS or his heirs shall & may at any time after the 15th
of October next sell the said property above mentioned to the highest
bidder for ready money at such time & place as he the said WILLIAM S.
JENKINS or his heirs shall think proper first giving 10 days notice by
public advertisement of the time & place of sale & the money arising
from such sale to apply to the discharge of the aforesaid debts due &
owing to the above named persons or so much thereof as may then remain
due & unpaid & also the interest thereon together with the cost of
recording this instrument & all other cost accruing by reason of these
presents & to make & execute a bill of sale to the purchasers thereof &
the balance of the money of any to be paid to the said ISHAM MILLS his
heir or assigns. In witness whereof we the above named have hereunto set

Halifax and State of North Carolina did some two or three years ago
bargain and sell unto JNO PENISTER his heirs or assigns my right title
and interest in a certain tract or parcel of land being lying in the
County of Halifax, on RICHARD CARPENTER's Mill Pond which lad title I
inherited from my father ISHAM MILLS and have to the said JNO PENISTER
for the sum of Twenty five dollars the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged, and him the said JNO PENISTER clearly acquitted I do
hereby further warrant and defend the said right title and interest unto
him the said JNO PENISTER his heirs and assigns forever. As witness my

This indenture made this the fifth day of January Eighteen hundred and
Seventy-seven between ALEXANDER MILLS and LOUISA his wife of the first
part and HILLIARD BROWN of the second part. All of the State of North
Carolina and County of Halifax, witnesseth that for and in consideration
of the sum of Eighty dollars in hand paid by the said HILLIARD BROWN,
the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged by the said ALEXANDER MILLS
and LOUISA his wife. They the said ALEXANDER MILLS and LOUISA his wife
have granted, bargained, sold and aliened and by these presents do
grant, bargain, sell and alein unto the said HILLIARD BROWN his heirs
and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land; with all the
appurtenances thereunto belonging. Situate lying and being in the County
of Halifax and State of North Carolina, containing by estimation
eighteen acres be the same more or less, and bounded as follows: known
as the MARTHA HERVEY tract beginning at a persimmon tree running N.E. to
a white oak, thence West to a white oak, thence South to a white oak
stump, thence East to the beginning said to contain eighteen acres more
or less. To have and to hold the said tract of land and premises hereby
granted, sold and aliened, unto the said HILLIARD BROWN his heirs and
assigns forever, and the said ALEXANDER MILLS and LOUISA his --- for
themselves their heirs and assigns, the said tract or parcel of land and
premises before mentioned unto the said HILLIARD BROWN and his heirs and
assigns free from the claim of them the said ALEXANDER MILLS and LOUISA
his wife and their heirs will and do warrant and forever defend by these
presents the right and title to the said HILLIARD BROWN against all
claims whatsoever. In witness whereof the said ALEXANDER MILLS and

of the first part and HILLARD BROWN of Halifax County and State of North
Carolina party of the second part, witnesseth that the said parties of
the first party for and in consideration of the sum of sixty dollars
lawful money of the United States of America to them in hand paid by the
said party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
have granted aliened remised released enfeoffed and confirmed and by
these presents do grant alien remise release enfeoff and confirm unto
the said party of the second part and unto his heirs and assigns forever
all the following piece or parcel of land lying and being in said County
and State aforesaid adjoining the lands of ALEX MILLS and ANN MILLS and
others and known and designated as follows bounded on the South by the
lands of ALEX MILLS and on the East by the lands of ANN MILLS on the

GRANVILLE MAYO beginning at a post oak ALEX MILLS corner thence East
along said MILLS line to a pine on ANN MILLS corner, thence North along
said MILLS line to a red oak on T.H. CHRISTIE's line thence West along
said CHRISTIE's line to red oak on MAYO's corner thence South along said
MAYO's line to the beginning containing twenty acres more or less
together with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances
thereunto belong or in anywise appertaining and the reversion and
reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof,
and in all the estate right title interest claim and demand whatsoever
of the said party's of the first part either in law or equity of in and
to the above granted premises, with the said hereditaments and
appurtenances, to have and to hold the above granted premises, with the
appurtenances and every part and parcel thereof to the said party of the
second part his heirs and assigns forever. And the said LOUISA MILLS and
ALEX MILLS and KINCHEN H. TONY for themselves their heirs executors and
administrators does covenant grant bargain promise and agree to and with
the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns to warrant and
forever to defend the above granted premises and every part and parcel
thereof now being in the quiet and peaceable possession of the said
party of the second part against the said partys of the first part their
heirs executors administrators and assigns and against all and every
person or person claiming or to claim the said premises or any part

MILLS and ALEX MILLS her husband, KINCHEN H. TONY and SARAH JANE TONY
his wife, personally appeared before me this day, and acknowledged the
due execution of the foregoing deed of conveyance; and the said LOUISA
MILLS and SARAH JANE TONY being by me privately examined separate and
apart from their said husbands touching their voluntary execution of the
same, doth state that they signed the same freely and voluntarily
without fear or compulsion of their said husbands or any other person

Know all men by these presents that I, HENRY MONTFORD of North Carolina,
Warren County in consideration of the sum of ten shillings, current
money to me in hand paid by GABRIEL GANT before the sealing of these
presents, have bargained, sold, release, granted and confirmed and by
thes presents do bargain, sell, release, grant, and confirm unto the
said GABRIEL GATT [sic], all the Negro slaves, hereinafter
mentioned, now belonging to me and being in Warren County aforesaid wit,
TOM, EDY, PRINCE, MARY, CHERRY, TILLEY, JENNY, DELIE, BEN, DAVY,
TUCKER, RALPH, PETER, YORK, FED, NED, CUDGO, BETTY, EPHRAIM, ROBIN,
PATTY, NANNIE, PHILLIS, SALLY, LANCEY, PHILL, twenty five in number
to have and to hold the said twenty five Negroes with their future
income unto the said GABRIEL GANT his heirs and assigns forever;
provided always whereas the said GABRIEL GANT sometime since became
security for me at the suit JOHN and WELLS COOPER in Henrico County
Court, in Virginia and the said JOHN J. WELLS thereas obtained a
judgment against me for eight hundred pounds Virginia money. And upwards
besides costs and execution have issued on the judgement against the sad
GABRIEL GANT my security aforesaid. Now this is the true interest of
these presets and it is hereby so agreed between the parties aforesaid
that if the said HENRY MONTFORD shall save harmless and indemnify the
said GABRIEL GANT his heirs Executors and Administration and every other
form all lots and damage that he or they or any of them might suffer or
sustain for as by reason of the GABRIEL's suitorship aforesaid then thes
presents and every estate herein contained shall cease and be void,
otherwise to remain in full force.

This Indenture made this Twenty first day of August in the year of our
Lord one Thousand seven hundred & fifty four, between JOSEPH MONTFORT of
Edgecombe County and Province of North Carolina Gent on one part and
SOLEMON HAWKINS of the County and Province afsd. Shoemaker on the other
part Witnesseth, that he the said JOSEPH MONTFORT for and in
consideration of the sum of Thirty Pounds cur't money of Virginia to him
in hand paid by the sd SOLEMON HAWKINS before the ensealing and delivery
hereof the receipt whereof the said JOSEPH MONTFORT doth acknowledge and
thereof and every part thereof doth acquit and discharge the said
SOLEMON HAWKINS his Executors, administrators and assigns by these
presents, hath given granted bargained and sold and confirmed and doth
by these presents fully freely and absolutely give grant bargain sell
and confirm unto the said SOLEMON HAWKINS his heirs and assigns forever
that tract or parcel of land and plantation lying on the Southside
Roanoke in Edgecombe County containing Two hundred and Tenn acres be the
same more or less, to wit, beginning at the main run in Quankee Percoson
then So. 23W to a red oak in SOLEMON WILLIAMS line then So. 47W on his
line 118 pole to a white oak, W80 pole to a Hickory, N 290 pole to a
pine, E54 pole to a red oak in PRAT's line So. 63 E170 pole to a white
oak in the said pocoson to the main run thereof, then down the said run
to the first station the same being part of a deed for four hundred and
nineteen acres of land obtained from FRANCIS CORBIN Esq'r agent for the
Right Honble Earl of Granville by the said JOSEPH MONTFORT by deed
bearing date the first day of November in the XXVII year of the Reign of
our now Lord the King as by the same will more fully appear reference
thereunto being had and the Reversion and Reversions, remainder &
remainders & yearly rents and profits thereof with their & every of
their appurtenances in any ways belonging. To have and to hold the sd
tract or parcel of land and plantation to the said SOLEMON HAWKINS his
heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of the sd
SOLEMON HAWKINS his heirs and assigns forever and also the said JOSEPH
MONTFORT the said land tot he said SOLEMON HAWKINS his heirs and assigns
to his & their proper use & uses in manner and form aforesaid against
his heirs & assigns & every of them shall & will warrant & defend by

& LEONARD BROWN & JULIA A BROWN his wife of the County of Athens and
State of Ohio, in consideration of the sum of Four hundred and fifty
dollars in hand paid by EMANUEL ASH of County and State aforesaid, have
bargained and sold, and do hereby grant and convey unto the said EMANUEL
ASH and his heirs and assigns forever, the following premises, situate
in Rome Township in said Athens County, and State of Ohio and known and
described as follows: The South half of the NorthEast Quarters of
section numbered Eleven (11) Town six (6) Range twelve (12) of the Ohio
Company Purchase
To have and to hold the said premises, together with the appurtenances,
unto the said EMANUEL ASH and his heirs and assigns forever.
And we, the said E. H. MOORE and LEONARD BROWN for ourselves & heirs, do
hereby covenant with said EMANUEL ASH and his heirs and assigns, that we
are lawfully seized of the premises aforesaid; that said premises are
free and clear from all incumbrances whatsoever; and that we will
forever Warrant and Defend the same, with the appurtenances, unto the
said EMANUEL ASH and his heirs and assigns, against the lawful claims of
all persons whomsoever. And we, the said AMY MOORE, wife of said E. H.
MOORE, and JULIA BROWN, wife of said LEONARD BROWN, do hereby relinquish
all our rights and claims to dower in said premises.
