I am researching information on my great-grandfather Holley STRINGFIELD, born in New Hanover County, c. 1839-1840. I do not know when he married or who his parents were. He had a son or sons, and one daughter, my grandmother Henrietta Esabella STRINGFIELD, born October 3, 1874 in Sampson County, NC by his first wife (name unknown. My grandmother Henrietta married William SMITH of Bladen County (Abbotts Township-b. abt. 1836-1837) NC, in 1892 in Georgia. He died in Miss. in June 21, 1923. Four of their three children were born in Georgia: Dessie Holly SMITH, Liska Jane SMITH, Ethel Mae SMITH, Annie Josephine SMITH (I think Stuckey, GA; Macgregor, GA.; Alamo, GA. respectively). He later married a woman named Ella (maiden name unkown) and had several children, Emmanuel (b.1897, Salome (b.1905), Esther (b. 1906), these three died in Chicago,IL (Salome and Esther's last names are listed on the Social Security Death Index as SPRINGFIELD); Nathaniel (b.-unknown) died in Michigan. I know of no other living descendants of the STRINGFIELD family. There are no available records other than Social Security information, that I know of. Any information that I have I am willing to exchange. I do have a web page www.familytree.com, under the title "The William SMITH Family; a.k.a "Willie James SMITH" Any information would help us. I do know that Holley STRINGFIELD and William SMITH are listed in the 1870 Ninth Federal Census.

All nine of their children were born in New Hanover County. The family moved to Georgia in 1796. Ann LEE died 31 May 1834 at Taylor's Creek, GA. I am searching for records of an ancestor relative of mine, J. M. Henson. Sometimes spelled both ways, Henson/Hinson. He is reported by the South Carolina Archives and History as a private in the CSA Company I, 17 South Carolina Infantry. J. M. Henson was reported to have died in the General Military Hospital No. 4 in Wilmington NC March 23, 1863 of typhoid fever. I would like to know if you have any records on him or if you know of a confederate cemetry near Wilmington where he is probably buried? I am also looking for Charlotte Raley, his mother and if she is buried near Wilmington about the same time. Your help will be appreciated.

My name is Amy Packer and I used to live in Wilmington, actually my sister still works and resides there. Anyway, I was searching your web site and i was wondering if you had done any research on people who lived in Wilmington during 1944-1946. The reason for my questioning is that my biological grandmother lived there about this time and died there when she was approximately 30 years old. Her name was Mae Belle TODD and she had two sons at the time, my father John Wayne (PACKER) and his brother Robert. I want to find out as much as I can about her but its all come to a dead end because i dont know what year she was born nor where. I do know she was buried in Loris, SC, but died in Wilmington. I would think there would be a death certificate a the New Hanover Co. courthouse. You probably cant help me but if you possibly know how i could get this info, possibly over the internet that would be great. if not thanks for your time. thanks from Charlotte, Nc Amy J. Packer

I am at a proverbial brick wall in my search for the origins of David & Luke BOWEN. Both are documented as being in the NC Militia for Wilmington is 1748 and 1752. First off, family bible records indicate that a David was born 15 May 1732, no place is mentioned. The IGI has a David christened on 30 Jul 1732 at Bristol Parish, Prince George, VA. The parents are William & Amy BOWEN. In know that in 1777 a William BOWEN, Spyers SINGLETON, and four other merchants petitioned Gov Caswell to either place or have the state place a cannon at the mouth of what I think is the Cape Fear River. Does anyone have any information about a William BOWEN who lived in that area at that time? This bible also states that David had 3 children, Wm (1762), Luke (1765), and Ann (1767). We're pretty sure that 1765 Luke moved to Fayetteville where he died in 1829. This leaves me with a mysterious Luke--born early enough to be in the militia in 1748. Virginia has great records for their militia folk--age, height, date & place of birth, occupation, etc. This doesn't seem to be the case as far as I can see with North Carolina. Has anyone a good idea about where I might find info on the NC militiamen? I've been to the LOC and NARA and found only names and ranks, no other info. ANY info will be very much appreciated--no kidding--no matter how far out. Thanks very much. Marcie F. Bowen-Astley

I am interested in the James MURRAY whose deed to William EVANS was witnessed by Thomas MURRAY on 9 June 1757.(New Hanover Book D, p305.) Also, the Thomas MURRAY who lived in the New Hanover, Onslow, Duplin area (Holly Shelter and Angola Creeks) at this time. Particularly, anything about Thomas's antecedents and relations. What is the link between Thomas and James? For that matter, with which James MURRAY is Thomas linked, and how many of them were there? I find reference to as many as 3 Jameses (besides the Loyalist) in this general area at about the same time.
