FREEMAN posted by Jenny Edwards on Friday, April 3, 1998

I am doing research on Alexander FREEMAN, a free black in North Carolina who was born about 1788. In 1857, Alex received a land grant of land grant of 4 acres from the state of N.C. on Myrtle Grove Sound about ten miles south of Wilmington in 1857. Can anyone refer me to some sources which may indicate why free blacks were given land grants by the state in the antebellum period? Also, does anyone have information on this Alexander FREEMAN or his wife, Charity (b. 1786)?

SAMPSON, SWIFT, WALKER posted by Robert Hill on Friday, May 8, 1998

My name is Bob Hill. I have been researching the WALKER line which I have followed back to Wilmington in 1798 with the birth of my great great grandfather, James H. WALKER. I have been told that he is a descendant of the Reverend, Major, Governor George WALKER, of Londonderry. George's son, Robert WALKER came to the colonies under the auspices of Col John SAMPSON as part of a group of people called "Retainers" I can't seem to locate any information about Retainers. I have asked a couple of history teachers at local colleges but they don't have any concrete answers. Do you have any Retainer information that may be of help to me? It was said that the Walker's home was called "The Barn" and some of their descendants were somehow associated with this choice named location. I located a book written by Joseph Gardner SWIFT that mentioned some of his children being born at "The Barn" at the family home in Wilmington. His wife was Louisa M. WALKER, daughter of Captain James WALKER. Do you have any help to offer to me? Thanks for your assistance. Bob Hill :-)

DICKSON, JONES posted by Sonny Dixon on Monday, May 25, 1998

... searching for information on Robert DICKSON, apparently born in Duplin (or New Hanover) county NC about 1750. With his brother (or cousin), Michael, he moved to St. Mathews Parish, GA (later Effingham, now Screven County) around 1765. His name is recorded on historical markers in Screven County, GA as one of the first area settlers. Robert married Susannah "Suky" JONES, daughter of Francis JONES, in 1771 at Ebenezer Church in current Effingham County, GA. I have various land records from 1772-1774 in Georgia. Robert was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Georgia Militia in 1776 at Savannah and died in 1782 of wounds received in an engagement with the Tories, apparently in St. Mathews Parish - or current Screven County. I have examined and tentatively ruled out the relevance of records of a Robert DICKSON from nearby Richmond County, during roughly the same period. I am against a wall when it comes to securing even scant information about my Robert prior to the move to Georgia. It is far and away my most frustrating genealogical impasse. Duplin/New Hanover folks, anyone --- help me please!
