This Indenture made this 6th day of Nov'r 1834 between HERBERT HIX &
MARY HIX his wife of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina of
the one part & JESSE ASH son of WM ASH of the aforesaid Ct & State of
the other part witnesseth that the said HERBERT & MARY HIX for & in
consideration of the other part witnesseth that the said HERBERT & MARY
HIX for & in consideration of the love they have for sd JESSE ASH hath
given him a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the Ct. &
State aforesaid & bounded as follows viz, Beginning at a scrub oak on
SHINE's line then on sd SHINE's line to a red oak then to a dogwood then
to a white oak thence to the first station containing two acres more or
less with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise
appurtaining And the said HERBERT & MARY HIX doth for themselves their
heirs & assigns agree to warrant & forever defend unto him the sid JESSE
ASH his heirs or assigns from them the said HERBERT & MARY HIX or any
person or persons claiming by or under them. In witness whereof the said
HERBERT & MARY HIX hath hereunto set their hands & seals the day & date
above written.

This Indenture made this 12th day of February one thousand Eight hundred
& forty two between HARBOARD HIX & MARY HIX of the one part both of the
County of Halifax & State of North Carolina & WILLIAM ASH of the County
of Halifax & State aforesaid witnesseth that the said HARBOARD HIX &
MARY HIX for & in consideration of the sum of Eighteen Dollars to
therein hand paid by the said WILLIAM ASH the receipt they doth hereby
acknowledge hath granted & sold unto him the said WILLIAM ASH one tract
or parcel of land situated lying & being in the County of Halifax &
State aforesaid & bounded as follows Viz North & West & South West by
HARBOARD HIX South by KINCHEN TONEY East by RICHARD CARPENTER Beginning
at a Walnut tree in RICHARD CARPENTER's line thence near West 270 yards
to a post oak at the road thence near South East along the various
courses of said land to a hickory in KINCHEN TONEY's line 307 yards
thence near East along TONEY's line 50 yards to RICHARD CARPENTER's line
cornering on a dogwood near the line thence near North along CARPENTER's
line 280 yards to the first beginning containing ten acres be the same
more or less To have & to hold the aforesaid bargained tract or parcel
of land unto him the said WILLIAM ASH his heirs & assigns forever. And
we the said HARBERT HIX & MARY HIX do hereby for ourselves our heirs &
assigns will warrant & will forever defend the right & title of said
tract or parcel of land as also against all & every other person or
persons unto him the said WILLIAM ASH his heirs & assigns forever. In
witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands & seals this day & date
first written.

HERBERT HICKS & JESSE JOHNSTON to T.C. WILLIS- 1832

This Indenture made this ninth day of October in the year of
our Lord One thousand Eight hundred thirty two between HERBERT HICKS of
the first part JESSE JOHNSTON of the second part & THOMAS C. WILLIS of
the third part all of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina.
Witnesseth that whereas I the said HERBERT HICKS is firstly indebted to
THOS. C. WILLIS in the sum of seventeen dollars in a judgment with
interest from the 11th April 1829 & cost $1.80c and the said HERBERT
HICKS is desirous to secure & pay the said THOS. C. WILLIS and whereas
JESSE JOHNSTON have been chosen for the purpose hereafter mention. Now
this indenture witnesseth that I the said HERBERT HICKS for & in
consideration of the premises & the further sum of one dollar to me in
hand paid by JESSE JOHNSTON the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
have bargained sold & convey and by these presents do bargain sell
convey & confirm unto the said JESSE JOHNSTON his heirs & assigns
forever one tract or parcel of land lying & being in the County of
Halifax & State of North Carolina containing by estimation forty acres
be the same more or less and being the same whereon the sd HICKS now
lives adjoining the land of WILLIAM MILLS, KINCHEN TONY & others. To
have & to hold the same tract or parcel of land together with all the
appurtenances & thereunto belonging & all the right title or claim of
him the said HARBERT HICKS [sic] to the same unto him the said JESSE
JOHNSTON. Nevertheless the indenture is upon the condition that if the
said HARBERT HICKS shall fail to pay the above mentioned sum & there &
in that case it shall be lawful & full power & authority is hereby given
unto said JESSE JOHNSTON whenever requested by the said THOS. C. WILLIS
his heirs Excrs. Admrs or assigns to sell the said tract or parcel of
land at public sale for ready money after giving ten days previous
notice thereof and out of the proceeds of such sale to pay to the said
THOS. C. WILLIS the aforesaid sum of money & all lawful interest arising
therefrom together with all cost charges & expenses attending such sale
& for the execution of this Trust and the balance if any to return to
the said HERBERT HICKS his heirs &c In witness whereof we have hereunto
set our hands & affixed our seals the day & year above written.
