The detached militia was to consist of 7,000 men, North Carolina's share of the 100,000 men called for by the Federal government at the outset of the war. In 1814, another levy was requested in addition to the original request. The method of filling the quota of detached militia was to call for a muster of the militia of a certain county on a given day and then ask for volunteers to fill up a company, usually around seventy (70) men. If not enough men volunteered, then lots were cast, or every tenth man was taken. Substitutes were permitted if the draftee could find someone willing to go in his place. Following is a list of the 1812 muster of detached militia of Tyrrell County shown in a listing of all detached militia state-wide, published by the NC Adjutant General's Office on March 22, 1851. This is the 10th Company, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, detached from the Tyrrell Regiment of NC Militia. |

North Carolina War of 1812 Pay Vouchers consist of some 5000 vouchers, also called certificates. Vouchers were issued in lieu
of cash by
the governor after the auditor had validated a claim. The vast majority of the certificates were issued for military service
by detached militia, either those called out to defend the coast in 1813 or companies ordered to rendezvous at Wadesboro in
1815. A few of the vouchers were for supplies furnished to the army. The certificates are on preprinted forms with the blanks
filled in, and show voucher number, date of issue, the soldier's name and rank, his captain's name and county, and the amount
due. When a voucher was redeemed, it was cancelled by punching a hole through it. Vouchers are for 31 counties only.
The 1812 detached militia of Tyrrell County was called out in July and August of 1813. Certificates that were paid exist for those listed below with certificate numbers ranging from 822 to 861. Among these there are no certificates for numbers 829, 832, 835, 840, 855, 856 and 860, so there are at least 7 soldiers missing from this list. Perhaps they never redeemed their certificates. Just click on the soldier's name to see a copy of his certificate. |
