TYRRELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
WPA CEMETERY RECORDS INTRODUCTION

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created by the government during the Depression and continued in existence until 1943. It's primary purpose was to provide jobs to the unemployed. Most of the projects involved construction, but a Historical Records Survey was created in conjunction with local government. This included surveys of cemeteries, including earlier surveys conducted in the past.

In the Tyrrell County survey, you will see several surveys for a few cemeteries. One was an earlier survey and one conducted under the auspices of the WPA. Both of these surveys are included herein, since the earlier survey includes tombstone inscriptions that were unreadable or tombstones that were lost in the subsequent survey. In addition, errors in names or dates are sometimes revealed.

A complete index of all burials in the WPA survey is provided. Click here to go to the index. To browse the pages of the survey sequentially, click here.
