Copy of Benjamin Wilson’s
Will
In the name of God
Amen, I Benjamin J. Wilson of the County of
Henderson and State of North Carolina being
Sick and weak in Body but of perfect mind and
memory, Thanks be given unto God, Calling into
mind the mortality of my body, And knowing that
it is appointed unto all men once to die, Do
make and ordain this last will and testament.
That is to say, principally and first of all I
give and recommend my soul into the hands of
Almighty God that gave it to me. And my body I
recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent
Christian burial at the discretion of my
Executor nothing doubting but at the general
Resurrection I shall receive the same again by
the mighty power of God. And as touching such
worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to
bless me with in this life, I give, devise and
dispose of the same in the following manner and
form. First, I give and bequeath to Jane Grant
my dearly beloved wife all my Horses, Cattle,
Hogs and Sheep, household and Kitchen furniture
and all of my property of every kind as may
remain after my debt is all settled. Also I
give and bequeath to Jane Grant my dearly
beloved wife all and singular my lands
[unclear] and tenements by her freely to be her
possession and enjoyed to be enable her to
raise, Support, and School all the children
that may be left under her charge and when my
youngest becomes of age or at the death of Jane
Grant my dearly beloved wife what property that
remains to be equally divided between them
taking into consideration what they have each
received. And I do hereby utterly disallow
revoke and discount all and every other former
Testaments, Wills, Legacies, bequeaths and
Executors by me in any said before named Willed
and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this
and no other to be my last Will and Testament
to which I constitute make and ordain Jane
Grant my dearly beloved wife and my honorable
friend Ephraim England Executrix and Executor
of this my last Will and Testament. I am
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and
seal this first day of November in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty
three.
